Matt Damon’s journey from Harvard to Hollywood wasn’t a straight path to success.
In 1988, Damon entered Harvard University to study English literature while pursuing acting on the side. During a screenwriting class, he wrote an assignment that his professor encouraged him to develop further. That small piece of writing would eventually become the foundation for *Good Will Hunting*.
Then came a risky decision.
In 1993, Damon left Harvard and moved to Hollywood to pursue acting full-time. But success didn’t come quickly. There were small roles, auditions, rejection, and plenty of waiting.
Eventually, Damon and his childhood friend Ben Affleck realized that waiting for Hollywood to give them a big opportunity might take forever. So they decided to create one themselves.
They developed Damon’s old Harvard writing assignment into a full screenplay and wrote the leading roles for themselves.
That screenplay became *Good Will Hunting*.
Released in 1997, the film received nine Academy Award nominations. In 1998, at just 27 years old, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The rest became Hollywood history, with Damon going on to star in films such as *Saving Private Ryan*, *The Bourne Identity*, *The Departed*, and *The Martian*.
