The Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) extends heartfelt congratulations to the winning projects from Bangladesh that have been honoured in the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2026.

It has been a matter of immense pride that two projects from Bangladesh have been recognized among thirty-four outstanding projects worldwide, spanning 15 countries and four continents. The awards celebrate architecture that responds thoughtfully to urgent social, environmental, and urban challenges, and these recognitions further reaffirm Bangladesh’s growing presence on the global architectural stage.

The Zebun Nessa Mosque in Savar, Designed by Ar. Saiqa Iqbal Meghna with Studio Morphogenesis Ltd team, has been recognized for its thoughtful integration of spirituality, community engagement, and inclusivity within an industrial context. The project reflects a sensitive architectural response shaped through participatory dialogue and human-centered design principles.

Similarly, the BRAC University Campus, Dhaka, designed by WOHA for BRAC University, has been awarded for its exemplary climate-responsive and socially integrated design approach. Transforming a former derelict site into a vibrant vertical campus, the project demonstrates an inspiring model of sustainable urban education infrastructure.

বাংলাদেশ স্থপতি ইনস্টিটিউট (বাস্থই)-এর পথচলা পাঁচ দশকেরও বেশি সময়ের। এই দীর্ঘ যাত্রাপথে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি যেমন স্থাপত্য পেশার বিকাশে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রেখেছে, তেমনি এর ইতিহাসে সংরক্ষিত রয়েছে অসংখ্য অর্জন, সংগ্রাম, সাফল্য ও চ্যালেঞ্জের স্মৃতি। সময়ের প্রবাহে আমাদের অনেক প্রথিতযশা স্থপতি হারিয়ে যাচ্ছেন, আর তাদের সঙ্গে হারিয়ে যাওয়ার আশঙ্কা রয়েছে বাস্থইয়ের ইতিহাসের বহু মূল্যবান ও অলিখিত অধ্যায়।
এই বাস্তবতা উপলব্ধি করে ২৬তম নির্বাহী পরিষদের উদ্যোগে গঠিত হয়েছে বাস্থই ইতিহাস লিপিবদ্ধকরণ কমিটি। কমিটির লক্ষ্য হলো বাস্থইয়ের দীর্ঘ পথচলার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনাবলি, অভিজ্ঞতা, দলিল-দস্তাবেজ, আলোকচিত্র এবং প্রাসঙ্গিক তথ্য সংগ্রহ ও সংরক্ষণের মাধ্যমে একটি প্রামাণ্য ইতিহাস রচনা করা।
এই উদ্যোগের অংশ হিসেবে প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ে বাস্থইয়ের বিভিন্ন সময়ে দায়িত্ব পালনকারী ৪০ জনেরও বেশি সাবেক নির্বাহী পরিষদের সদস্যকে নিয়ে একটি মতবিনিময় সভার আয়োজন করা হয়। সভায় অংশগ্রহণকারীরা প্রতিষ্ঠানটির অতীত কর্মকাণ্ড, গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনা, সাংগঠনিক অভিজ্ঞতা এবং ভবিষ্যৎ করণীয় বিষয়ে মূল্যবান মতামত ও পরামর্শ প্রদান করেন। একই সাথে ইতিহাস সংরক্ষণ কার্যক্রমকে আরও সমৃদ্ধ ও কার্যকর করার লক্ষ্যে প্রয়োজনীয় তথ্য, ছবি ও নথি সংগ্রহের বিষয়েও আলোচনা হয়।
সভায় সভাপতিত্ব করেন স্থপতি কমিটির আহ্ব্য়ক প্রফেসর হারুনুর রশিদ। উপস্থিত ছিলেন ইতিহাস লিপিবদ্ধকরণ কমিটির সদস্যবৃন্দ এবং বর্তমান নির্বাহী পরিষদের সদস্যরা।

স্থাপত্যচর্চায় অসামান্য অবদান ও সৃজনশীল উৎকর্ষকে সম্মান জানাতে ইনস্টিটিউট অব আর্কিটেক্টস বাংলাদেশ (বাস্থই) আয়োজিত “Honouring Excellence” শীর্ষক একটি বিশেষ সেমিনার গত ১৪ মে ২০২৬, সন্ধ্যা ৬:৩০টা থেকে ৮:৩০টা পর্যন্ত বাস্থই সেন্টারের Multipurpose Hall-এ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। অনুষ্ঠানে নিবন্ধিত ২৭৫ জনের মধ্যে মোট ১৯৩ জন সদস্য ও অংশগ্রহণকারী উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

এই সেমিনারে প্রধান বক্তা হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন স্থপতি শরীফ উদ্দিন আহমেদ, প্রধান স্থপতি ও প্রতিষ্ঠাতা, স্হাপতিক।সেমিনারে বক্তা তাঁর বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রকল্প, পেশাগত অভিজ্ঞতা এবং অর্জনের পেছনের চিন্তাধারা তুলে ধরেন। আলোচনায় তিনি তাঁর স্থাপত্য দর্শনের মূল ভিত্তি হিসেবে philosophy, context এবং মানুষের সঙ্গে স্থানের সম্পর্কের বিষয়টি ব্যাখ্যা করেন। বিশেষভাবে বাংলা বদ্বীপের ভূপ্রকৃতি, জলবায়ু, সামাজিক বাস্তবতা এবং সাংস্কৃতিক পরিচয় কীভাবে তাঁর নকশা ভাবনাকে প্রভাবিত করেছে তা বিস্তারিতভাবে উপস্থাপন করেন।

আলোচনায় স্থানীয় ঐতিহ্যভিত্তিক স্থাপত্য থেকে অনুপ্রেরণা গ্রহণের বিষয়টি বিশেষ গুরুত্ব পায়। বক্তা স্থানীয় নির্মাণ কৌশল, প্রাকৃতিক আলো-বাতাস, মানবিক স্কেল এবং স্থানীয় উপকরণের ব্যবহারকে সমকালীন স্থাপত্যচর্চার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপাদান হিসেবে তুলে ধরেন। এছাড়া উপকরণ নির্বাচনের ক্ষেত্রে ইটসহ স্থানীয় নির্মাণসামগ্রীর ব্যবহার এবং তার নান্দনিক ও পরিবেশগত গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কেও তিনি বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করেন।

সেমিনারের আলোচনায় সুফিবাদ এবং আধ্যাত্মিক চিন্তার প্রভাবও উঠে আসে, যা তাঁর স্থাপত্যচর্চায় সরলতা, নীরবতা ও মানবিক অনুভূতির প্রতিফলন ঘটিয়েছে। পাশাপাশি তিনি তাঁর পেশাগত জীবনের সংগ্রাম, সীমাবদ্ধতা অতিক্রমের অভিজ্ঞতা এবং ধাপে ধাপে অর্জিত সাফল্যের বিষয়গুলো অংশগ্রহণকারীদের সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নেন।

সেমিনারটি সঞ্চালনা করেন ২৬তম নির্বাহী পরিষদের সম্পাদক (সেমিনার ও কনভেনশন) স্থপতি সাইদা আক্তার মুমু । অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তার হাতে সম্মাননা ক্রেস্ট তুলে দেন বাস্থই জাতীয় সহ-সভাপতি স্থপতি নওয়াজিশ মাহবুব। এবং সমাপনী বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন ২৬তম নির্বাহী পরিষদের সম্পাদক (পেশা) স্থপতি এম. ওয়াহিদ আসিফ। অংশগ্রহণকারীদের সক্রিয় উপস্থিতি ও মতবিনিময়ের মাধ্যমে সেমিনারটি একটি জ্ঞানসমৃদ্ধ, অনুপ্রেরণামূলক এবং পেশাগতভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আয়োজন হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়।

এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সেশনের আয়োজনে সহায়তা করার জন্য Asian Paints-এর প্রতি আন্তরিক ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করা হয়।

The World Urban Forum (WUF), organized by UN-Habitat, is one of the most significant global platforms dedicated to discussions on urbanization, sustainable development, climate resilience, housing, and the future of cities. WUF 2026, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, brought together policymakers, architects, planners, researchers, and development professionals from around the world to exchange ideas and experiences for building safer, more inclusive, and resilient urban environments.

This year, a good number of IAB members participated in WUF 2026, led by the Vice-President (International Relations), Ar. Mahfuzul Huq Zaglul, and the Secretary, Environment & Urbanization, Ar. Dr. Khurshid Zabin Hossain Taufique, along with former Vice President (IR) of IAB, Ar. Md. Ishtiaque Zahir, representing Bangladesh at this important international forum.

At the World Urban Forum in Baku, TEAM IAB had the honour of presenting the IAB Uttorio to distinguished panelists and speakers from Japan, Indonesia, India, and many other countries. The gesture reflected a meaningful exchange of ideas, culture, and architectural vision, embodying the spirit of global collaboration towards safer and more resilient cities.

An exclusive chamber was allocated for the activities and meetings of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) at the forum — marking a significant milestone in the history of IAB’s participation at the World Urban Forum.

The newly appointed UN-Habitat Bangladesh in-charge, Architect Fabila, joined one of the meetings where discussions were held on strengthening future collaborations and exploring opportunities to work together more effectively on various initiatives.

A fruitful session was also held regarding the possibility of establishing an independent IAB Pavilion at the forthcoming World Urban Forum 14, scheduled to be held in Mexico City in 2028.

A documentary film on waste management by Bangladeshi participants was presented at the Cinema of the Forum during this year’s event. The screening witnessed a packed audience and received high appreciation from attendees.

Team অনুষঙ্গ বাংলাদেশ, led by Ar. Moinul Alam (A-288) , Ar. A.K.M. Saleh Ahmed Anik (AA-435) , and Ar. Md. Omor Faruk Sanim (S-266), also presented their low-cost housing project developed through community participation and inclusive design approaches. Their work reflected the creativity, social commitment, and evolving architectural vision emerging from Bangladesh. Best wishes were extended to the team for even greater achievements ahead.

A briefing session is expected to be arranged soon with the Executive Council and IAB members to share the activities, engagements, and experiences from the World Urban Forum.

for Future Practice.

Architectural education is at a turning point, facing rapid technological change, climate challenges, and shifting societal needs. This theme invites a critical re-examination of how architects are trained to meet the demands of future practice. It emphasizes bridging academia and professional practice, embracing digital and hybrid learning, and embedding sustainability, ethics, and resilience into curricula. By fostering dialogue across cultures and disciplines, the conference seeks to envision architectural education as a dynamic, adaptive.

The international conference Rethinking Architectural Education for Future Practice invites scholars, educators, practitioners, and students to submit extended abstracts for either offline or online presentation. This one-day hybrid event seeks to critically examine the evolving landscape of architectural education and its alignment with future professional practice, societal needs, and global challenges.

বাস্থই চট্টগ্রাম চ্যাপ্টারের আয়োজনে স্থপতি বায়েজিদ মাহবুব খন্দকারের স্থাপত্য ভাবনা নিয়ে সেমিনার অনুষ্ঠিত

গত ২৩ এপ্রিল ২০২৬, বৃহস্পতিবার বিকাল ৪:৩০ মিনিটে, বাংলাদেশ স্থপতি ইনস্টিটিউট (বাস্থই) চট্টগ্রাম চ্যাপ্টার-এর ১২তম কমিটির উদ্যোগে আয়োজিত হলো এক অনন্য স্থাপত্য আলোচনা সভা। সেমিনারের শিরোনাম ছিল: “Tropicality: Interwoven Realities – Selected Projects by Nakshabid Architects”।

মূল বক্তা ছিলেন দেশের প্রখ্যাত স্থপতি, Ar. Bayejid Mahbub Khondker, Principal Architect, Nakshabid Architects, Dhaka। তিনি BUET থেকে ১৯৯৬ সালে স্নাতক সম্পন্ন করেন এবং দীর্ঘদিন ধরে স্থানীয় সংস্কৃতি, জলবায়ু ও কমিউনিটির সাথে গভীর সংযোগ রেখে কাজ করছেন। তাঁর স্থাপত্যচর্চা বিশেষভাবে পরিচিত পরিবেশবান্ধব ও প্রেক্ষিতনির্ভর নকশার জন্য।

সেমিনারে তিনি তাঁর সম্পাদিত বিভিন্ন স্থাপত্য প্রকল্পের অভিজ্ঞতা ও নকশাগত দর্শন অংশগ্রহণকারীদের সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নেন। প্রেজেন্টেশনটি তিনি থিমভিত্তিক ভাগে উপস্থাপন করেন, যেখানে প্রতিটি প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে স্থাপত্যের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি তুলে ধরা হয়।
প্রথমে তিনি তাঁর কমার্শিয়াল প্রকল্প নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন—যেখানে কার্যকারিতা, ব্যবহারকারীর অভিজ্ঞতা এবং সমসাময়িক নান্দনিকতার সমন্বয় কীভাবে একটি সফল বাণিজ্যিক স্থাপত্য গড়ে তোলে তা ব্যাখ্যা করেন। এরপর তিনি ল্যান্ডস্কেপ প্রকল্পসমূহ উপস্থাপন করেন, যেখানে পরিত্যক্ত বা অব্যবহৃত স্থানকে সৃজনশীল নকশার মাধ্যমে প্রাণবন্ত পাবলিক স্পেসে রূপান্তর করার উদাহরণ তুলে ধরেন। একইসঙ্গে তিনি দেখান কীভাবে ডিজাইনের মাধ্যমে স্থানীয় মানুষকে সেই স্থানের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত করা যায়।

রিলিজিয়াস আর্কিটেকচার অংশে তিনি pure form-এর ব্যবহার এবং আলোকে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নকশা উপাদান হিসেবে প্রয়োগের বিষয়টি বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্ব দেন। তিনি ব্যাখ্যা করেন, কীভাবে উপাদানের স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত প্রকাশ এবং আলোর সুনিপুণ ব্যবহার একটি আধ্যাত্মিক পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করতে পারে।

রেসিডেন্সিয়াল প্রকল্পগুলোতে তিনি ট্রান্সপারেন্সি, মেটালক্রাফটিং এবং অভ্যন্তরীণ স্পেসের নতুন ব্যাখ্যা নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। বিশেষ করে ডাইনিং স্পেসকে কীভাবে একটি প্রাণবন্ত ও ঘটনাবহুল স্থানে রূপান্তর করা যায়, সে বিষয়ে তাঁর নকশাগত দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি তুলে ধরেন। পাশাপাশি প্রচলিত সীমানা প্রাচীরের ধারণা ভেঙে দিয়ে সবুজায়ন ও পানির ব্যবহার করে কীভাবে একটি নিয়ন্ত্রিত অথচ উন্মুক্ত পরিবেশ তৈরি করা সম্ভব, তাও তিনি ব্যাখ্যা করেন।

এছাড়াও তিনি কিছু unbuilt প্রকল্প এবং পাবলিক বিল্ডিং ডিজাইনের পেছনের ভাবনা ও প্রক্রিয়া তুলে ধরেন, যেখানে নকশার সামাজিক ও প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক চ্যালেঞ্জগুলো স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে। সেশনের শেষাংশে তিনি তাঁর RIBA পুরস্কারপ্রাপ্ত রংপুরের “কারুপণ্য” প্রকল্পের নকশার গল্প উপস্থাপন করেন। তিনি ব্যাখ্যা করেন, কীভাবে এই নকশা প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে সামাজিক সমতা প্রতিষ্ঠা এবং প্রকৃতিনির্ভর স্থাপত্যচর্চাকে আরও এগিয়ে নেওয়া সম্ভব হয়েছে।

সেমিনারে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বাস্থই ২৬তম নির্বাহী কমিটির সেক্রেটারি সেমিনার পদাধিকারী স্থপতি সাইদা আক্তার মুমু, বাস্থই চট্টগ্রাম চ্যাপ্টারের ১২তম কমিটির সদস্যবৃন্দ: স্থপতি মোহাম্মদ আসাদুজ্জামান চৌধুরী (সম্পাদক), স্থপতি অনিকেত চৌধুরী (সদস্য - পেশা), স্থপতি মঈনুল হাসান তুহীন (সদস্য - সেমিনার ও শিক্ষা), স্থপতি শায়লা আহমেদ (সদস্য - ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতি), স্থপতি সাইফুদ্দিন চৌধুরী (সদস্য- প্রকাশনা ও প্রচার)। এছাড়াও উপস্থিত ছিলেন বিশিষ্ট সিনিয়র স্থপতি জেরিনা উদ্দিন হোসেন, স্থপতি তুহিন বড়ুয়া, স্থপতি সজীব পাল, স্থপতি হাসিনা সাম্রিনা হক এবং আরো অনেক পেশাজীবী স্থপতি, ছাত্র-ছাত্রীসহ প্রায় ৮০ জনেরও বেশি অংশগ্রহণকারী।

উল্লেক্ষ্য, সেমিনারটির স্পন্সর প্রতিষ্ঠান ছিল এশিয়ান পেইন্টস।

অনুষ্ঠান শেষে আয়োজকদের পক্ষ থেকে বক্তাকে এবং স্পন্সর প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রতিনিধিকে উত্তরীয় ও সম্মাননা স্মারক প্রদান করা হয়।
