১৯৪৮ সালে খুব স্বল্প পরিসরে গভর্নমেন্ট আর্ট ইনস্টিটিউট নামে যে প্রতিষ্ঠান যাত্রা শুরু করে, কালক্রমে তা-ই পরিণত হয় বর্তমান চারুকলা ইনস্টিটিউটে। পুরান ঢাকার জনসন রোডের একটি জীর্ণ বাড়ির দুটি কক্ষ নিয়ে শুরু হয় এর কার্যক্রম। তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে শিল্পকলা নিয়ে যে আন্দোলন শুরু হয়, তার নেতৃত্ব দেন শিল্পাচার্য জয়নুল আবেদিন। আর এ আন্দোলনের ফলেই প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় এ প্রতিষ্ঠান, যা এখন 'ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় চারু
কলা ইনস্টিটিউট'। শুরুতে এখানে বিভাগ ছিল চারটি। চালু করা হয়েছিল পাঁচ বছর মেয়াদি সার্টিফিকেট কোর্স। ১৯৫১ সাল পর্যন্ত প্রতিষ্ঠানটি এখানেই ছিল। এরপর এটিকে স্থানান্তরিত করা হয় সেগুনবাগিচায়। এখানে এসে এ প্রতিষ্ঠানটির কার্যক্রম চলছিল বেশ ভালোই; কিন্তু এখান থেকেও পরে এ প্রতিষ্ঠানটি স্থানান্তরিত করা হয়। একে নিয়ে আসা হয় শাহবাগে। তৎকালীন পূর্ববঙ্গের গভর্নর চৌধুরী খালিকুজ্জামান ১৯৫৪ সালের ৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি শাহবাগে অবস্থিত বর্তমান ভবনের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন। তখন এর নাম ছিল 'আর্ট ইনস্টিটিউট'। ১৯৬৩ সালে এ ইনস্টিটিউট প্রথম শ্রেণীর সরকারি কলেজ হিসেবে রূপান্তরিত করা হয়। পাঁচ বছরের সার্টিফিকেট কোর্সের স্থলে চালু করা হয় দুই বছরের প্রাথমিক কোর্সসহ পাঁচ বছরের বিএফএ ডিগ্রি কোর্স। ১৯৭৮ সাল থেকে চালু করা হয় এমএফএ নামে মাস্টার্স কোর্স। ১৯৮৩ সালের ১ সেপ্টেম্বর এটিকে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একটি ইনস্টিটিউট হিসেবে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়, যা আজকের চারুকলা ইনস্টিটিউট। পরে চালু করা হয়েছে চার বছর মেয়াদি অনার্স কোর্স।
With the leadership of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin the eminent artists Anwarul Huq, Quamrul Hasan, Khawaja Shafique Ahmed, Safiuddin Ahmed and Habibur Rahman started Government art Institute, currently known as Faculty of Fine Art (FFA) in DNMI Hospital building at Jonson road in Dhaka. At the moment of its beginning there were six teachers along with Zainul Abedin as the Principal and eighteen students. The activities of this Institute started with three departments Fine arts (at present Drawing and Painting), Commercial art (at present Graphic Design) and Graphic art (at present Printmaking). In 1952 the Institute was moved to a building at Segun Bagicha and then in 1956 it was moved to its own building at Shahbagh. In 1963 the Institute turned into Government Degree College and was named East Pakistan College of art and Crafts. After independence of Bangladesh this college was named Bangladesh college of Arts and Crafts. Art History department started M.F.A. course in 1991 and Honors course in 2001. In 1983 this college merged as Institute in Dhaka University. Honors course has been started since 1992-93 session. The Institute was turned into a Faculty of Fine art of Dhaka University in 2008.
