To mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, Food Security Network – KHANI Bangladesh and Participatory Research and Action Network – PRAAN organised a dialogue meeting in Maijdee, Noakhali on 1 October 2026, under this year's theme "Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste".

More than 10 hotels and restaurants that took part in the meeting will now keep a record of their daily food waste and display it visibly to consumers. Each participating establishment received a "Food Waste" tracking poster and table stand to record the kilograms of food wasted on the previous day and in the current month.
Restaurant representatives noted that consumers often order more than they need and leave food unfinished, with some hotels serving Bangla food wasting fifty kilograms or more a day. Proposals included offering portions according to need, advising consumers when an order seems excessive, training waiters, and displaying awareness messages.
Mr. Sumadhu Chakraborty, District Food Safety Officer, Noakhali, stressed that law enforcement alone cannot reduce food waste; awareness about the value of food must be built from childhood. Md. Aminuzzaman, Executive Director of Bandhan and member of the PRAAN General Committee, said that the root of the problem lies in the absence of these discussions in how we grow up and learn.
According to the UN Food Waste Index 2024, annual per capita food waste in Bangladesh is 82 kilograms. Both the National Food and Nutrition Security Policy 2020 and Bangladesh's National Pathway (July 2025) for the UN Food Systems Summit call for action to reduce food waste. KHANI Bangladesh urges the swift formulation of a separate national strategy.
