BEI Holds Academic Consultation at the University of Chittagong on Bangladesh’s Emerging Foreign Policy

As part of BEI's research project “Shaping Creative Diplomacy in Bangladesh,” the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) held an academic consultation at the University of Chittagong on 15 September 2026, with the support of the Hong Kong Research Center for Asian Studies-Bangladesh Center and the Department of Political Science, University of Chittagong.

The consultation brought together respected teachers, scholars and researchers for an engaging exchange on the study’s emerging findings and recommendations, contributing valuable academic perspectives to the development of a more people-informed and responsive foreign policy framework for Bangladesh.

BEI Engages Chattogram Stakeholders on Bangladesh’s Emerging Foreign Policy

As part of its research project “Shaping Creative Diplomacy in Bangladesh,” the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) convened a consultation in Chattogram on 16 September 2026, bringing together civil society representatives, journalists, and other distinguished stakeholders to reflect on the study’s emerging findings and recommendations.

Ambassador M. Humayun Kabir (Retd.), President of BEI, delivered the welcome remarks, while Md. Alif Iftekher Seaum, Research Officer, led presentations on the study’s key findings. The ensuing discussion offered valuable perspectives on advancing a more people-informed and responsive approach to Bangladesh’s foreign policy.

Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) is pleased to welcome Mr. Abdul Hai Sarker as the new Chairman of the Institute. Mr. Sarker is a Founder Member of BEI’s Board of Trustees.

Hon’ble Chairman, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI)

Mr. Abdul Hai Sarker, a Founder Member of the Board of Trustees of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute for a two-year term commencing on 8 September 2026.

Mr. Sarker completed his Post-Graduation (M. Com.) from the University of Dhaka in 1970. He subsequently entered international trade and business and established himself as a prominent industrialist in Bangladesh. His entrepreneurial vision and dynamic leadership contributed to the growth of Purbani Group into one of the country’s leading business conglomerates. He currently serves as Chairman and CEO of several companies under the Group, including Shohagpur Textile Mills Ltd., Purbani Synthetic Spinning Ltd., Purbani Fabrics Ltd., Karim Textile Ltd., Karim Spinning Mills Ltd., Purbani Yarn Dying Ltd., Purbani Agro Processing Ltd., Purbani Rotor Spinning Ltd., Semicentennial Textiles Ltd., and Purbani Fashion Ltd.

With decades of leadership experience in Bangladesh’s banking and business sectors, Mr. Sarker is the Founder Chairman of Dhaka Bank PLC and currently serves as its Chairman. He also serves as Chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB). He is a former President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), having served in that capacity for four terms, and a former Director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).

Mr. Sarker is also a Founder Trustee and former Chairman of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) and currently serves as Chairman of the Education, Science, Technology and Cultural Development Trust (ESTCDT). He has also served as an Associate Director of the International Cotton Association (ICA), Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Beyond his corporate and institutional leadership, Mr. Sarker has remained actively engaged in social welfare and community development. His contributions to business, industry and society have earned him numerous recognitions, and he has been accorded Commercially Important Person (CIP) status by the Government of Bangladesh.
