Arannayk Foundation is a not for profit organization working to facilitate the conservation, protection, restoration and sustainable use of tropical forests in Bangladesh. Arannayk Foundation is a not for profit organization established in 2003 by the joint initiative of the Governments of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the United States of America based on the provisions of the US Tropical Forest Act of 1998, which seeks to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity assets of tropical forests.

Thirty-one students and three faculty members from the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University, visited Arannayk Foundationโ€™s Chakaria Plantation Project for a field-based learning experience.

Led by Professor Dr Mohammad Shafiul Alam, Professor Dr Khaled Misbahuzzaman and Dr Sohag Miah, the students visited plantation sites to observe seedling growth and survival, and examine soil conditions and their relationship with plant growth. They also learned about plantation management and field-level activities aimed at restoring tree cover along the embankments of former Chakaria Sundarban areas.

Arannayk Foundation implemented this project with funding from the Department of Fisheries (BD) under the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project supported by the World Bank Bangladesh.

As part of the Seedling Distribution and Tree Plantation Program 2026, Arannayk Foundation engaged students in Rowangchari and Lama through seedling distribution, tree plantation, quiz competitions and discussions on Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR).

The program engaged 98 students from Kacchoptoli Alor Pathshala High School in Rowangchari and 50 students from Lama Ideal Girls High School in Lama, creating hands-on opportunities to learn about forest restoration and biodiversity conservation.

The Rowangchari program was attended by Tazmin Alam Tuli, UNO, Rowangchari, as Chief Guest and Biswanath Tanchangya, Chairman, No. 3 Alekkhong Union, as Special Guest. In Lama, Md. Moin Uddin, UNO, Lama, joined as Chief Guest.

The activities are done under Scaling Up Forest Landscape Restoration in Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh project, funded by UK International Development from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office under the โ€œReversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA)โ€ Program, managed by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).
Arannayk Foundation is implementing this project in association with TAHZINGDONG.

Md. Nazrul Islam, Chief Executive Officer of Bandarban Hill District Council, visited the REDAA SFLR Project sites and met with communities, Youth Conservation Volunteers (YCVs) and trial plot farmers.

During the visit, he engaged with community members in Suknachari Para, Lulain Headman Para and Lapaigya Para, and observed restoration sites, jhum-based agroforestry plots and a trial plot. The visit provided an opportunity to learn about the projectโ€™s ongoing activities and community-led approaches to forest landscape restoration.

On 14 September 2026, Arannayk Foundation team paid a courtesy call on Ma Mya Ching, Honโ€™ble Chairman of the Bandarban Hill District Council, to introduce Arannayk Foundation and share its ongoing work in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The discussion focused on the interventions and impacts of the SFLR and HI-CAS projects. SFLR is scaling up community-led forest landscape restoration in Bandarban, while HI-CAS is strengthening climate resilience through ecosystem restoration, nature-based water solutions, climate-smart agriculture, indigenous seed conservation and community engagement in Bandarban and Khagrachari.

Kamrul Islam, Project Manager, SFLR, and Emranul Islam, Project Focal Point, HI-CAS, joined the meeting along with project team members and Dinendra Tripura, Executive Director of TOYMU, one of our project partners.

A national workshop on Ecological Monitoring of the Sundarbans was held on 14 September 2026 at the Ban Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka, under the Protection of Sundarbans Mangrove Forest Project (PSMFP). Senior government officials, researchers, academics and conservation practitioners reviewed the 2025โ€“26 ecological monitoring findings and discussed priorities for long-term monitoring and management.

Experts presented findings across four key areas: floral and abiotic indicators by Professor Dr Swapan Kumar Sarker, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology; faunal indicators by Professor Dr M. Monirul H. Khan, Jahangirnagar University; fish and aquatic resources indicators by Dr Md. Enamul Hoq, Arannayk Foundation; and Ecological Health Indexing by Professor Dr Mahmood Hossain, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), and Professor Dr Muhammad Abdul Aziz, Jahangirnagar University.

The workshop was graced by Sheikh Faridul Islam, Honโ€™ble State Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bangladesh as Chief Guest. Dr Mohammad Abdul Motaleb, Executive Director, Arannayk Foundation; Md. Motaleb Hossain Sarker, Executive Director, Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services; and Dr Fahmida Khanam, Secretary, MoEFCC, attended as Special Guests. The session was chaired by Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangladesh Forest Department.

The monitoring initiative is being implemented by CEGIS and Arannayk Foundation in collaboration with the Bangladesh Forest Department under PSMFP.

On 12 September 2026, two workshops held at Madhutila Eco Park in Nalitabari and in Jhenaigati, Sherpur, brought key stakeholders together to strengthen human-elephant conflict management and elephant conservation.

Dr Mohammad Abdul Motaleb, Executive Director of Arannayk Foundation, delivered the keynote paper, focusing on effective conflict management measures and strengthening the response of Elephant Response Teams (ERTs). The workshops also focused on developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for ERTs and identifying elephant refuge areas to support more effective protection and response.

The Honโ€™ble Members of Parliament, Fahim Chowdhury from Sherpur-2 and Mahmudul Hoque Rubel from Sherpur-3, joined the Nalitabari and Jhenaigati workshops respectively as Chief Guests. Farida Yesmin, Hon'ble Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur, chaired both workshops.

The HI-CAS Project has started plantation activities in Bandarban and Khagrachari to restore degraded catchment areas across its project sites.

The initiative will increase vegetation cover, reduce soil erosion and surface runoff, improve water infiltration and soil moisture retention, and help sustain the springs and streams that local communities depend on.

The Member of Bandarban Hill District Council and Agriculture Extension Officer in Bandarban and the UNO of Matiranga Upazila, Khagrachari, joined the programmes as Chief Guests and inaugurated the activities.

Arannayk Foundation is implementing the project with technical support from ICIMOD and funding from Global Affairs Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

On 2 September 2026, Arannayk Foundation and local organisation Tahzingdong held the inception workshop of the Beyond Border project at the Upazila Parishad Auditorium in Alikadam, Bandarban. The project will work to protect big cats, wildlife corridors, forests, and biodiversity across the Chittagongโ€“Lushai transboundary landscape of Bangladesh and India.

Local leaders and frontline officials shared ground realities, including hunting, human-wildlife conflict, and wildlife sightings. The discussion highlighted the importance of indigenous knowledge, community participation, climate resilience, and green livelihoods.

This project is funded by German Development Cooperation through KfW and supported by the IUCN Save Our Species ITHCP project.

Effat joins team Arannayk bringing a background in Environmental Science from Bangladesh University of Professionals and hands-on HR experience from her earlier internship right here with us.
