Tragic Cylinder Explosion in Ashulia: New Hazards for Workplace

Safety and Rights Society (SRS) expresses its deep concern over the tragic cylinder explosion and fire in Ashulia, which resulted in deaths of 7 workers and injuries more than 18.

Every worker has the right to a safe and healthy workplace. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for strict compliance with occupational health and safety standards, proper handling and storage of hazardous materials, effective emergency preparedness, and regular inspection and enforcement.

SRS calls for a transparent and independent investigation to identify the causes and responsibilities behind the incident and to ensure appropriate compensation, medical support and rehabilitation for the victims and their families.

Workplace safety is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right.
No one can avoid their responsibility including cylinder company, transport authority and purchaser.

SRS at the UN Regional Business & Human Rights Forum, Bangkok

SRS is honored to co-organize and speak on the panel "Closing Gaps in Accountability and Protection: Gender-Responsive Solutions from Women Workers" at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok (16 Sept, 1–2 PM UTC+7).

Our Executive Director, Md. Sekender Ali Mina, joins women worker leaders from across Asia to spotlight how platform and informal workers- especially women are excluded from labour protections in practice, even when the law says otherwise. Drawing on SRS's work with the App-based Transport Union and the Bangladesh Gig Workers' Association, he'll speak to what it takes to turn Bangladesh's 2026 labour law reform into real protection, respect, and remedy for gig and informal workers.

Joining SRS on this panel are Women's Fund Asia, Platform Workers' Federation of Thailand, Marsinah Indonesia, and Dabindu Collective- a genuinely cross-country dialogue on what gender-responsive supply chain accountability can look like when it's built with, not just for, women workers.

Because the question is no longer whether gig and informal workers deserve rights. It's how quickly we can make those rights real.

Safety and Rights Society (SRS) has stood with the Rightsholders' Platform since its founding and we're proud to keep contributing as it enters OROV II. 🤝

This week, 22 member organizations, SRS among them, spent three days reflecting on Phase One and shaping the Platform's path for 2026–2028: a stronger mandate and sustainability model, continued risk assessment work plus three new service formats being piloted, a sharper Platform identity, and two new members welcomed BGIWF and Sommilito Sramik Federation (SSF).

Global brands are already reaching out to the Platform for meaningful rightsholder engagement in their risk management and SRS is glad to be part of the collective voice making that possible.

The work now moves from building the foundation to strengthening the Platform's role, capacity, and collective action and SRS is here for it, every step of the way.

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀: partner with the Rightsholders' Platform to co-create HREDD solutions rooted in rightsholders' voices.

সেফটি এন্ড রাইটস সোসাইটি (SRS)-এর উদ্যোগে “সুশীল” প্রকল্পের আওতায় ২৫ আগস্ট ২০২৬ তারিখে ঢাকা জেলার বিভিন্ন সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান ও আইন প্রয়োগকারী সংস্থার প্রতিনিধিদের অংশগ্রহণে সিভিক স্পেস, ডিজিটাল নিরাপত্তা, ডেটা সুরক্ষা ও ডিজিটাল মিডিয়া লিটারেসি বিষয়ক সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মশালা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। কর্মশালায় নিরাপদ ও দায়িত্বশীল ডিজিটাল আচরণ, ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য সুরক্ষা, অনলাইন ঝুঁকি মোকাবিলা এবং নাগরিক অংশগ্রহণের জন্য সহায়ক পরিবেশ তৈরির বিভিন্ন দিক নিয়ে আলোচনা ও অভিজ্ঞতা বিনিময় করা হয়। অংশগ্রহণমূলক এই আয়োজনের মাধ্যমে একটি নিরাপদ, অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও অধিকারভিত্তিক ডিজিটাল পরিবেশ গড়ে তোলার বিষয়ে অংশগ্রহণকারীদের জ্ঞান ও সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধির সুযোগ তৈরি হয়েছে।

২২ আগস্ট ২০২৬ তারিখে জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে যাত্রা শুরু করলো নাগরিক প্ল্যাটফর্ম 'স্বাস্থ্যসেবা সুরক্ষা আন্দোলন', সেইফটি এন্ড রাইটস সোসাইটি (এসআরএস) এই প্লাটফর্মের গর্বিত অংশীদার।

চিকিৎসায় অবহেলা, ভুল চিকিৎসা কিংবা চিকিৎসা নিতে গিয়ে দুর্ব্যবহারের শিকার রোগী ও তাদের স্বজনদের অধিকাংশই জানেন না কোথায় অভিযোগ জানাতে হবে বা আদৌ এর কোনো প্রতিকার পাওয়া যাবে কিনা। এমন ভুক্তভোগীদের প্রতিকার পাওয়ার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় তথ্য, দিকনির্দেশনা, পরামর্শ ও ফলোআপ সহায়তা দিতে যাত্রা শুরু করেছে নাগরিক প্লাটফর্ম ‘স্বাস্থ্যসেবা সুরক্ষা আন্দোলন’।

আত্মপ্রকাশ অনুষ্ঠানে ভুক্তভোগীদের জন্য নীতিগত দিকনির্দেশনা ও বৃহত্তর প্রেক্ষাপটে করণীয় বিষয়গুলো তুলে ধরে বক্তব্য দেন ব্যারিস্টার সারা হোসেন। ব্যারিস্টার রাশনা ইমাম আইনি দৃষ্টিকোণ ও বাস্তবতার আলোকে চিকিৎসায় অবহেলার বিষয়টি তুলে ধরেন। এছাড়া বিষয়টির প্রেক্ষাপট ও সময়ের প্রাসঙ্গিকতা নিয়ে বক্তব্য দেন আলতাফ পারভেজ। নিভীন রেজা ও মাজহারুল ইসলাম প্লাটফর্মের আহ্বায়ক ও সদস্য সচিব হিসেবে এর আনুষ্ঠানিক যাত্রার ঘোষণা দেন। অনুষ্ঠানে ভুক্তভোগী পরিবারের সদস্যরাও তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা তুলে ধরেন

অভিযোগ মানেই চিকিৎসায় অবহেলার প্রমাণ নয়। তবে প্রতিটি অভিযোগ শোনা, নিরপেক্ষভাবে যাচাই করা এবং প্রয়োজন হলে প্রতিকার নিশ্চিত করা একটি নিরাপদ স্বাস্থ্যব্যবস্থার অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। আমরা, চিকিৎসক বা হাসপাতালের বিরুদ্ধে নয়; বরং অবহেলা, অস্পষ্টতা ও জবাবদিহিতার ঘাটতির বিরুদ্ধে।

গতকাল, ১৭ আগস্ট ২০২৬, জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবের সামনে জড়ো হয়েছিলাম আমরা — শ্রমিকদের পাশে দাঁড়াতে, তাদের কণ্ঠ হয়ে উঠতে।
সীতাকুণ্ডের ভাটিয়ারীতে জাহাজভাঙা কারখানায় বিষাক্ত গ্যাসে ৯ জন শ্রমিক প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন। যে হাতগুলো প্রতিদিন লোহা কাটে, দেশের অর্থনীতি গড়ে- সেই হাতগুলোই আজ নিরাপত্তাহীনতার শিকার। একটি জাহাজ, একটি বদ্ধ ট্যাংক, আর কর্তৃপক্ষের অবহেলা — কেড়ে নিল ৯টি প্রাণ, ভেঙে দিল ৯টি পরিবারের স্বপ্ন।

📢 গতকালের সমাবেশে আমরা একসাথে দাবি জানিয়েছি —
✅ দায়ীদের দ্রুত বিচার ও শাস্তি
✅ ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত পরিবারের যথাযথ ক্ষতিপূরণ
✅ নিরাপদ কর্মপরিবেশ নিশ্চিতকরণ

এটি কোনো বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা নয়। একের পর এক দুর্ঘটনায় ঝরছে শ্রমিকের প্রাণ, অথচ প্রতিকার নেই। আমরা থেমে থাকব না, যতক্ষণ না ন্যায়বিচার নিশ্চিত হয়, যতক্ষণ না প্রতিটি কর্মক্ষেত্র হয়ে ওঠে সত্যিকারের নিরাপদ।
