🤝 Our Country Director, Max Tunon, met with the Honourable Minister of Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare, Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain, MP, today to strengthen cooperation on decent work and gender equality in Bangladesh.

Our discussion focused on four key priorities:
🟦Empowering Women: Scaling up the Gender and Skills Taskforce to boost female labour force participation.
🟦Building a Care Economy: Advancing the National Childcare Roadmap for universal, quality care.
🟦Ensuring Safe Workplaces: Supporting the operationalisation of ILO C190 in the workplaces
🟦Eliminating Child Labour: Strengthening systems to meet SDG 8.7 targets.

Honourable Minister Hossain emphasised the need to expand childcare services and professionalise caregiving nationwide.

We remain committed to partnering with the Government of Bangladesh to build a more inclusive and productive labour market.

On 16 April 2026, the ILO and GIZ, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF), convened a high level meeting with employers from diverse sectors to discuss the progress of the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) Pilot and its path toward a national system gradually covering all sectors.

The session highlighted key achievements, lessons learned, and the next steps toward expanding EIS nation-wide.

The message from the representatives from government, employers and development partners was clear: “moving to a predictable, shared financing system for workplace injuries benefits everyone, including employers. It reduces financial uncertainty for businesses, strengthens trust between employers and workers, and supports higher productivity and global competitiveness.”

The meeting resulted in a common understanding of the employers to take the next steps towards a gradually adopted nationwide Employment Injury Scheme.

In the 12 April 2026 meeting with Md. Aminul Haque, State Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ms Ruchika Bahl, Chief Technical Advisor of the ILO ISEC Project in Cox’s Bazar, shared the positive impact, from the project investments, made on the lives of host community members in Cox’s Bazar, over the last three years.
Ms Bahl emphasised how the project has benefited approximately 25,000 women and youth to date, of whom 9,500 have received formal skills training, and approximately 7,500 have secured job placements in Cox’s Bazar. The ministry appreciated this and encouraged further initiatives.

Big news for workers' rights in Bangladesh! 🇧🇩🛡️

Today, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the ILO, and GIZ hosted a final tripartite review of the technical framework for the National Employment Injury Scheme (EIS).

This isn't just a minor update- it’s a total game-changer for workplace safety and security. Here is why:

🟦Shift to Social Insurance: We are moving from a "fault-based" model to a "no-fault" social insurance system.
🟦Comprehensive Coverage: The National EIS aims to protect workers across all sectors in Bangladesh gradually.
🟦Expert Backed: Built on a year of consultations and workshops with social partners and global experts.

As the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment noted, this framework is the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive National Social Security Strategy.
