Y-Just: Building Sustainable & Equitable Futures in Bangladesh

Y-Just: Building Sustainable & Equitable Futures in Bangladesh An initiative by YouthNet Global and FES Bangladesh to building Sustainable & Equitable Futures in 🇧🇩

30/03/2026

Up to 30% of Bangladesh’s garment exports to Europe are at risk by 2030, affecting millions of workers, families, and communities.

This is not a distant threat. It is a fast-approaching reality driven by the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), already applied to carbon-intensive sectors like steel, cement, and aluminium, and soon expanding to apparel.

At , global discussions made one thing clear: climate ambition is now shaping trade. While developing countries raised concerns about fairness, the direction is set. Low-carbon production is no longer optional.

For Bangladesh, one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, this is a critical moment.

The garment sector, driving over 80% of national exports, faces growing pressure from global policies and international buyers. Meanwhile, the country’s renewable energy transition remains slow, constrained by policy barriers, high costs, and limited infrastructure.

At YouthNet Global, we believe this is not only an energy transition. It is an industrial justice issue.

A just transition in Bangladesh must deliver:

⚡ Affordable renewable energy for industries
👷 Protection of workers’ rights and livelihoods
🌱 Real investment in green jobs and future skills
🏭 Strong support for small and medium suppliers
🌍 Effective climate diplomacy to protect trade and equity

Some manufacturers are already investing in renewable energy and efficiency. But this is not enough.

We need urgent, coordinated action across government, industry, finance, and global partners to remove barriers, unlock investment, and accelerate a fair transition.

The next few years will determine whether Bangladesh can protect its workers and sustain its global leadership in apparel or fall behind in a rapidly changing market.

A just transition must not leave workers behind.

The time to act is now!

As Bangladesh moves toward its 13th national parliamentary election, youth across the country are raising their voices for urgent and transformative climate action.

We appreciate UNB News for highlighting the growing call from youth climate activists demanding climate justice and a just transition in national political priorities. This recognition shows that youth voices are becoming impossible to ignore.

Bangladesh stands at a critical moment. The climate decisions made today will determine the safety, livelihoods, and future of millions of people, especially those already facing floods, heatwaves, river erosion, and water insecurity.

Just transition is not only an environmental agenda. It is about social justice, economic resilience, and climate security. Climate policies must protect workers, ensure water and food security, and safeguard vulnerable communities.

YouthNet Global calls on all political parties to adopt clear and inclusive climate commitments. These include responsibly phasing out high emission industries, expanding renewable energy and climate resilient infrastructure, strengthening social protection for climate affected communities, ensuring meaningful participation of youth and women in climate programmes, and protecting workers’ rights in the green economy.

The upcoming election is a historic opportunity to build a safer, fairer, and climate resilient Bangladesh. Youth are ready to lead and collaborate to make climate justice a national priority.

Join the conversation. Raise your voice. Support youth climate leadership. Link âŦ‡ī¸

Bangladesh is at a critical industrial crossroads đŸ‡§đŸ‡Šâ‡ī¸

Our industries: ready-made garments, textiles, construction, brick kilns, have driven economic growth but remain major contributors to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Intensified climate change impacts with global buyers demanding greener production, industry transition is no longer optional, it’s essential.

The Green Transformation Fund, launched in 2016 to support this shift, is moving too slowly:
💰 $140.94M USD and â‚Ŧ71.21M disbursed to only 60+ factories
âš ī¸ Only 36% of the euro component has been utilised
🏭 SMEs face complex compliance, 30% equity requirements, and bureaucratic delays

Meanwhile, politically connected firms accessed large loans more easily, some of which have defaulted, showing the need for stronger accountability.

Just Industry transition can:
✅ Reduce emissions and environmental pollution
✅ Improve workplace safety and protect workers’ rights
✅ Create jobs for youth and women
✅ Protect Bangladesh’s export competitiveness

The new government after the 12th February election must prioritise practical support for SMEs, enforce accountability in green financing, and ensure policies that integrate industry transition, workers’ rights, sustainability, and innovation.

💡 Youth are ready to lead this change. With proper support and financing, Bangladesh can become a global leader in sustainable industry transition.

Climate justice and a Just Transition can’t wait. As Bangladesh 🇧🇩 moves closer to national elections, we are at a decisive moment where the ballot box will shape our climate and development pathway for decades.

Climate justice, a Just Transition for emissions-intensive industries and the wider economy, and inclusive development must be at the heart of political commitments. This is not only about reducing emissions. It is about protecting lives, securing decent jobs, safeguarding livelihoods, and ensuring dignity for workers and climate-vulnerable communities.

A climate-resilient Bangladesh demands leadership that listens to frontline voices, invests in people, and delivers a fair transition that leaves no one behind.

ICCCAD Youth Fellow Imran Rabby shared youth perspectives as a panelist at the policy lab “Youth-Led Pathways for a Just Transition” at the Just Transition Pavilion at , jointly organized by the Government of Bangladesh 🇧🇩, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and YouthNet Global.

Speaking from the realities of Bangladesh’s coast, Imran highlighted how climate change is driving both temporary and permanent migration in coastal communities. He also emphasized that our vast river systems and the Sundarbans are not just at risk—they are powerful natural assets. When nature-based solutions are planned and implemented with communities, they can create meaningful change in livelihoods, resilience, and justice.

A just transition must center youth leadership, protect nature, and ensure coastal people are not left behind.

A just transition means leaving no one behind as we move from pollution to solution.

Workers, women, youth, and climate-impacted communities must be at the center of this shift.
Together, we can build a future that is fair, green, and inclusive for all. 🌱
