A promise of a life should never turn into a trap of exploitation. Yet behind many fake job offers and false promises is human trafficking, one of the world's most profitable crimes. It is one of the gravest violations of human rights, robbing individuals of their freedom, dignity, and security, affecting every region of the world, with millions of women, men, and children being trafficked each year. The purposes of such crime are sexual exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude, forced criminality, forced marriage, and even organ removal.
The 2026 theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," highlights an fast-growing form of trafficking in which organized criminal groups trick victims through fake job advertisements, promising legitimate employment abroad before trapping them in illegal scam compounds. Once trapped victims are forced to take part in scams, including romance scams, cryptocurrency scams and other online financial crimes while facing threats, violence, constant watching, debt bo***ge and severe psychological abuse. Rather than being offenders, these individuals are victims of trafficking who are coerced into criminal activities for the profit of transnational organized crime networks.
The international community has long recognized trafficking in persons as an international crime requiring a coordinated legal response. To address this growing transnational crime, the United Nations adopted the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, which supplements the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). The Protocol provides the internationally accepted definition of trafficking in persons and sets out a framework for preventing human trafficking, protecting victims, and holding traffickers accountable.
Bangladesh has adopted the Palermo Protocol in 2019, and the provisions of the Protocol were incorporated into law through the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Prevention and Suppression Ordinance, 2026. This Ordinance repealed the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012, and highlights essential measures for the prevention and suppression of trafficking. In addition, it provides for stronger protection of victims and addresses modern forms of trafficking to ensure Bangladeshโs compliance with international human trafficking conventions.
Another important concern is human trafficking increasingly intersecting with cyber crime, financial fraud, money laundering, and corruption. Thus, the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime is intended to promote international cooperation by facilitating cross-border investigations, evidence sharing, and coordinated law enforcement efforts against technology-enabled organized crime. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 30 July as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, recognizing the urgent need to raise awareness worldwide and reinforce international action.
On this World Day against Trafficking in Persons, ANUKUL stands in solidarity with survivors and reaffirms its commitment to justice, human dignity, and the protection of fundamental human rights. Preventing human trafficking needs stricter law enforcement, greater public awareness, better protection for victims, and stronger international collaboration. It requires not only effective legal frameworks but also collective action to ensure that every victim is protected and empowered to regain their independence while every trafficker is held accountable, and no one remains trapped behind the scam.
