🌾 Empowering the Next Generation as Champions of Biofortified Nutrition!
Under the REACTS-IN project, a dynamic nutrition sensitization program was recently hosted at Kathaldangi Girls' High School in Haripur Upazila, Thakurgaon.
Organized by HarvestPlus and HarvestPlus Sloutionsin collaboration with RDRS Bangladesh, the event brought together over 100 students and teachers to raise awareness about the critical role of biofortified crops—specifically zinc rice—in combatting hidden hunger and building healthier communities.
Key Event Highlights
Interactive Learning: Students learned firsthand about what zinc is, why zinc nutrition is essential for immunity and growth, and how consuming zinc biofortified foods can transform household health.
Behavioral Change Advocates: By educating adolescent girls, the initiative inspires students to serve as nutrition ambassadors—encouraging their families and farming communities to cultivate and consume zinc rice.
Engaging Quiz Competition: The discussion concluded with a lively quiz competition testing the students' new knowledge, followed by an awards distribution to celebrate their active participation.

Under the Multisectoral Alliance for Improved Nutrition (MAIN) Project, more than 300 farmers across Sunamganj and Sirajganj received zinc biofortified BINA Dhan-20 seeds along with hands-on training on improved rice production technologies.

Designed to help farmers prepare for the upcoming Aman season, the training covered quality seed use, best agronomic practices for zinc enriched rice, and the importance of zinc in improving health and nutrition.

Implemented by HarvestPlus Solutions with the support of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), this initiative is strengthening farmers’ capacity to grow nutritious crops while advancing nutrition-sensitive agriculture across Bangladesh.

By the end of 2026, the MAIN Project aims to train 14,000 farmers, expanding the cultivation of zinc biofortified rice and contributing to the fight against hidden hunger.

From Knowledge to Impact: Empowering Frontline Agricultural Officers

As part of the MAIN Project, HarvestPlus Solutions Bangladesh recently organized a Training of Trainers on zinc biofortified rice cultivation for more than 70 agricultural extension officers from Pabna and Sirajganj.

The training explored zinc biofortified rice production technologies, the role of biofortification in addressing hidden hunger, and the importance of integrating nutrition into agricultural systems. Discussions also focused on strategies to promote the cultivation and consumption of nutrient-rich crops at the community level, with the goal of improving maternal and child nutrition.

By strengthening the knowledge and capacity of frontline agricultural professionals, we are helping drive the adoption of biofortified crops and advancing nutrition-sensitive agriculture across Bangladesh.

Because improving nutrition starts long before food reaches the plate, it begins in the field.

Empowering the Next Generation for a Nutrition-Secure Future 🌾✨

Under the REACTS-IN project, implemented by Eco-Social Development Organization with technical support from HarvestPlus and HarvestPlus Solutions, 100 students in Thakurgaon participated in an engaging School Sensitization Program focused on the importance of zinc and tackling hidden hunger through biofortified crops.

The 2nd Steering Committee Meeting of the Multi-sectoral Alliance for Improved Nutrition (MAIN) project, organized by HarvestPlus Solutions, reflected the power of partnerships in addressing one of Bangladesh’s most pressing challenges- malnutrition and hidden hunger.

Consortium partners- CARE Bangladesh, HarvestPlus Solutions, iDE Bangladesh, and The Hunger Project Bangladesh, came together to advance collaborative solutions focused on nutrition-sensitive agriculture, establishing demonstration plots, providing zinc-biofortified rice seeds, strengthening WASH services, and empowering women as leaders and decision-makers.

In Shantiganj, Sunamganj district, on-ground efforts under the LDS-MAIN project are laying the foundation for better nutrition outcomes and stronger, more sustainable farming communities.

Field teams are engaging directly with farming households across Joykalash, Paschim Pagla, Purba Pagla, and Shimulbak, capturing real-time insights through digital tools like Kobo to ensure accuracy and transparency.

🔍 Key highlights:
• Coverage of ~4,000 farming households
• Identification of eligible rice farmers using defined criteria
• Creation of a robust database to select 800 beneficiaries

These efforts will enable the targeted distribution of biofortified zinc-enriched rice seeds, contributing to improved nutrition and sustainable livelihoods.

From Training to Transformation: Strengthening the Last Mile

In Baliadangi, Community Extension Facilitators came together under the REACTS-IN project for a focused training to strengthen agricultural extension at the last mile.

Bringing together frontline changemakers, the session created a space for shared learning, practical insights, and collective action, reinforcing the critical role of community facilitators in translating knowledge into impact.

A key focus area was the promotion of zinc-enriched rice varieties, a critical aspect in addressing micronutrient deficiencies and tackling hidden hunger in Bangladesh. Participants explored practical strategies for scaling adoption, strengthening last-mile delivery, and enhancing farmer engagement. Beyond technical learning, the training stood as a powerful example of multi-stakeholder collaboration in action. The partnership between World Vision, RDRS, HarvestPlus, and government extension systems reinforced how coordinated efforts can drive meaningful, grassroots impact.

By equipping community facilitators with the right knowledge and tools, this initiative strengthens the critical link between agricultural innovation and farmers, advancing nutrition, improving productivity, and building resilience across rural communities.

From Knowledge to Impact: Scaling Zinc Rice for Healthier Communities

Under the REACTS-IN project, 25 Sub-Assistant Agricultural Officers in Thakurgaon, Bangladesh were equipped with critical knowledge and skills on zinc-enriched rice cultivation empowering them to address zinc deficiency and drive improved nutrition outcomes at the community level.

By strengthening frontline capacity and promoting biofortified crops, this effort is contributing to healthier, more resilient food systems.

The training sessions supported by the Government of Canada, in collaboration with HarvestPlus Solutions, HarvestPlus, World Vision, Nutrition International, and McGill University also emphasized the introduction of different varieties of zinc-enriched rice and wheat along with modern cultivation technologies.
