IEEE NSU Student Branch, in collaboration with the IEEE APS-MTTS Bangladesh Joint Chapter, hosted a seminar called "Near-Field MetaSteering: A Method to Steer the Beam of Any Antenna" on 21st August at Syndicate Hall, North South University. The participants learned directly from Professor Karu P. Esselle of the University of Technology Sydney, a well known name in antenna and electromagnetic engineering. After a short introduction by host Faiza Ahmed and remarks from Dr Mohammad Abdul Matin, Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Prof. Dr Md Shazzad Hossain, Dean of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (SEPS) at North South University, Professor Esselle took the stage for what he mentioned was his sixth and final lecture in Bangladesh.

He began by giving an overview of antenna engineering, stating that in the past engineers used to steer the beam of antennas by rotating and modifying the radio frequency, and the new MetaSteering method is achieved by placing two thin plates called metasurfaces in front of the antenna. By spinning the two plates, the system can bend and redirect the radio waves in any direction. He touched on how phase distributions on printed PCB metasurfaces boost directivity, how the layers rotate together to adjust azimuth and elevation angles and how he grouped setups into Uni-Meta, Bi-Meta, and Tri-Meta configurations. He listed the upsides, no signal spillover, low power use, wide bandwidth, but noted it is slower than electronic steering. It was interesting to hear this method is already used by companies like Airbus and Thales and by universities such as UCLA and UTS.

The talk was followed by a Q&A session before wrapping up with a group photo. Many participants left with a clearer sense of how antenna technology is evolving and how such research finds its way into real industry and defence use, making it a solid session for anyone curious about where telecommunications is headed.
