INSB is basically here to fulfill the needs of members and the mission of IEEE. It provides an opportunity for student members to begin networking in their areas of interest, and future profession as well as enjoy all the benefits and facilities of being an IEEE member.

Professor Karunanayake Esselle is a distinguished professor in electromagnetic & antenna engineering at the University of Technology (UTS), Australia, and a world leader in telecommunications, defence, and space technologies. Recognised as one of the top 0.3% of researchers globally in networking and telecommunications, he was honoured with the Premier’s Prize for Leadership in Innovation. He also led the MetaSteerers Team, which won the Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia.

He earned his BSc in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering with first-class honours from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. After that, he pursued his MASc and PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Ottawa, Canada, with near-perfect GPAs. Before he joined UTS, he served as the Associate Dean (HDR) of the Division of Information and Communication Sciences, Director of the WiMed Research Centre and Director of the Centre for Collaboration in Electromagnetic and Antenna Engineering at Macquarie University, Australia.

With years of well-rounded experience, Professor Esselle has an extraordinary record of 21 major prizes and accolades received within approximately five years. He was also named Australia’s national professional engineer in 2022 and is the only individual to win the top “best of the winners” Excellence Awards in both the Australian Space Awards in 2022 and the Australian Defence Industry Awards in 2021, as well as being the recipient of Academic of the Year on both platforms.

Apart from awards, Professor Esselle is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales, IEEE, and Engineers Australia and has authored over 750 research publications with more than 16,000 citations. He is also a dedicated mentor and an international keynote speaker.

At the upcoming seminar titled “Near-Field MetaSteering: A Groundbreaking Method to Steer the Beam of Any Antenna”, Professor Esselle will draw from his robust experience and skills to give participants a view into the future of electromagnetics, antenna systems, and space innovations.

IEEE NSU Student Branch, in collaboration with IEEE NSU RAS SBC, IEEE NSU PES SBC, IEEE NSU IAS SBC and IEEE NSU SB WIE AG, organised the closing seminar titled “Navigating GenAI: A Fireside Chat On The Future of LLMs” as part of the event “Skill Development Venture 5.0” on 12th August, 2026. The event was organized for students interested in learning more about AI, LLMs and how they are continuously evolving the world of technology.

The seminar was conducted by Mr Saif Ahmed, Adjunct Lecturer, Department of ECE, North South University; Branch Counsellor of IEEE NSU Student Branch; Prompt Engineer at Invisible Technologies; and a researcher with publications in multiple Q1 journals. He began by welcoming all the participants and dove straight into the foundation, architecture, capability and limits of AI and LLMs. Participants learned about prompting techniques, the three attack classes, and the different stages of training an LLM. Alongside that, they learned about more complex concepts such as linear regression, neural networks and RNNs. They were also taught ideas such as how LLMs can act as an orchestrator, the concept of self-attention and how multimodal LLMs work. Mr Saif Ahmed also explained how linear algebra is a fundamental necessity for AI and LLMs. The final part of the seminar focused on research papers related to these fields. The session was made more engaging through interactive slides, which helped participants visualise difficult concepts.

Lastly, a short Q/A session was conducted in which participants clarified their technical difficulties and had thoughtful discussions about LLMs. After that, a fun quiz was held, and prizes were given to the winners. The seminar ended with a group photo session. The participants found the seminar engaging and informative, as it not only helped them learn more about AI and LLMs but also helped them understand how academic concepts translate to technological innovations.

IEEE NSU Student Branch, in collaboration with IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, successfully organized a workshop titled “Crafting Visual Impact 2.0: Shaping Ideas Through Graphic Design” on 11th August, 2026. The workshop was designed to introduce beginners to the basics of Adobe Illustrator and help them develop graphic design skills through practical learning.

The session was conducted by Wasiq Abrar Hossain and Shihad Showkat, Sub-Executives of the Graphics Team of IEEE NSU Student Branch. Wasiq Abrar Hossain began by discussing what participants should consider before starting a design and how to approach the initial stage of the design process. He then introduced key graphic design principles, including hierarchy, emphasis, contrast, balance, proportion, typography, color, and white space. He also reviewed a sample design to demonstrate how these principles can be applied and introduced several useful tools and features of Adobe Illustrator.

Shihad Showkat then guided participants in creating a workshop poster using Adobe Illustrator, applying the design principles discussed earlier in the session. He provided step-by-step guidance as participants worked on their own designs and explained how the principles and tools could be effectively applied in practical design. ABM Abdullah Al Habib Rafi and Tahmidatul Ayesha Asha, In-Charge of the Graphics Team of IEEE NSU SB, also assisted the participants throughout the workshop.

IEEE NSU Robotics and Automation Society Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, successfully organized “Pico Power: An Intro to Hardware with MicroPython and Raspberry Pi Pico” as part of Skill Development Venture 5.0 on 10th August, 2026. The workshop aimed to introduce Raspberry Pi Pico, MicroPython, and their practical applications through building different functioning circuits.

The workshop was conducted by Shamsia Munira, Treasurer of IEEE NSU Student Branch and Vice-Chair of IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, and Washio Ferdous Rubai, Secretary of IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter. Shamsia Munira began the session by introducing the fundamentals of the Raspberry Pi Pico, a microcontroller board based on the RP2040 chip. Later, Washio Ferdous Rubai, Secretary of IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, joined her in explaining the benefits of Raspberry Pi Pico, its pinout diagram, and the functions of different pins. Using Thonny IDE and MicroPython, participants first tested the built-in LED of the Raspberry Pi Pico and then built circuits to control an LED with and without a button. They also explored using a button as a digital input and a potentiometer as an analog input.

Participants then used the Raspberry Pi Pico to control a servo motor and also built a circuit using a DHT11 sensor to explore temperature and humidity sensing.For a smooth and efficient learning experience, circuit diagrams and code were provided beforehand, while the instructors explained different parts of the code to help participants understand the operation of the Raspberry Pi Pico. Participants were also encouraged to try the MOSFET-based circuits at home, while the instructors and volunteers assisted them in accurately building the circuits and keeping up with the workshop.

Lastly, Rahiq Rahman, Webmaster of IEEE NSU Student Branch, presented tokens of appreciation to both instructors, followed by a group photo. The workshop provided participants with an engaging and practical learning experience in Raspberry Pi Pico and MicroPython through hands-on circuit building.

IEEE NSU Student Branch, in collaboration with IEEE NSU PES SBC, IEEE NSU IAS SBC, IEEE NSU RAS SBC, and IEEE NSU SB WIE AG organized a workshop titled “PortfolioX: A Full Stack Web Development Workshop” as part of the event “Skill Development Venture 5.0” on 9th August, 2026. The event was designed to guide participants through the end-to-end process of building a fully functional live portfolio through providing them with a detailed, hands-on introduction to website development, equipping them with the tools to attract potential clients and collaborators.

The workshop was conducted by Rahiq Rahman, Webmaster of IEEE NSU Student Branch and Arman Mokammel, Final Year student at North South University. Arman Mokammel began the session by introducing Django and Visual Studio Code (VS Code), providing an overview of the software and explaining the commands used during the development process. He guided participants through setting up a Python environment and starting a new Django project, followed by an overview of the Django project structure and the development of the backend, including the database. He then demonstrated the Django default admin webpage, where participants could use their personalized usernames and passwords to manage information such as their profiles, jobs, and contact details for their portfolio.

Rahiq Rahman then led the frontend segment, explaining the basic structure of HTML and how CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) controls aspects such as colors, fonts, spacing, layouts, and animations. He demonstrated how Tailwind CSS can be used to develop the appearance of a portfolio website and discussed techniques for making a website more attractive to potential collaborators. The instructors then presented a more professional and customized portfolio that participants could personalize with their own information. They also discussed PythonAnywhere as a platform for free deployment and demonstrated the deployment process. Additionally, the instructors explained the role of Python in backend development, including login authentication, data handling, server-side logic, and serving the website.

Lastly, Abdullah Al Galib, Chair of IEEE NSU Student Branch, presented a token of appreciation to both instructors, followed by a group photo. The workshop provided participants with comprehensive guidance and practical knowledge to create their own portfolio websites from scratch.

IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, successfully organized a workshop titled "HOMER Pro Boot-camp: Design and Optimization of Smart Hybrid Power Systems" on 8th August 2026. The workshop was designed for students who are interested in renewable energy and curious to learn how simulation tools can be used to design, analyze, and optimize hybrid and microgrid energy systems.

The workshop was conducted by Mohammad Shafayet Hossain, Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North South University. He explained the basic theory behind power systems, microgrids, and renewable energy before introducing the HOMER Pro software, tracing its origin in the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and explaining its three core functions, like simulation, optimization, and sensitivity analysis, nested within a single integrated model. Participants gained hands-on experience in creating hybrid energy system models that combine solar PV, battery storage, and generator components and conducting advanced techno-economic analysis. The instructor then explained how to interpret system architecture results, cost summaries, and time-series plots of power output and load served. He also discussed system performance evaluation, lifetime cost estimation through Net Present Cost (NPC) and Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), and how to assess the overall feasibility of a microgrid setup using resource data. The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where participants shared their technical queries with the instructor.

Lastly, Lutful Islam Nabid, Chairperson of IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, presented a token of appreciation to the honorable instructor, followed by a group photo to mark the successful conclusion of the workshop. IEEE NSU Industry Applications Society Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, successfully organized a workshop titled “Token-Efficient Routing For Multi-LLM Inference” as part of Skill Development Venture 5.0 on 7th August 2026. The workshop was designed for students and AI enthusiasts interested in learning how modern artificial intelligence systems can improve the performance of large language models (LLMs) while reducing computational costs.

The session was conducted by Ms. Fabiha Haider, ML R&D Engineer at Penta Global Limited, and Mr. Mushahid Intesum, Software Engineer at Therap BD Limited. They began by explaining the concept of Frontier Models and why sending every query to a powerful Frontier Model can be expensive. They then introduced “cheap” and “strong” models and explained how to select the most suitable model for each query while maintaining a balance between cost, latency, and quality. The instructors discussed five routing strategies, along with a real-world application for each strategy. Participants were also introduced to concepts such as “Query Vectorisation”, “Classifiers”, “Reinforcement Learning”, and “Exploration vs Exploitation Framework”. After that, participants were shown a working demo of a few of the strategies discussed and were encouraged to complete the remaining code themselves. This allowed them to get hands-on experience by working on an industry-scale project. The session ended with discussions on some popular research papers within this field and a short Q/A segment, where participants clarified technical queries.

IEEE NSU Robotics and Automation Society Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, successfully organized a workshop titled “Microcontroller Mastery: Tinkercad & ESP32 Essentials” as part of Skill Development Venture 5.0 on 6th August 2026. The workshop was organized to introduce participants to the fundamentals of microcontrollers, embedded systems, circuit simulation, and hands-on hardware interfacing.

The workshop was conducted by Saima Alam, Chairperson of IEEE NSU RAS SBC, and Areebah Hasanat, Treasurer of IEEE NSU RAS SBC. Areebah Hasnat introduced the roles of microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators in robotic systems and provided an overview of Tinkercad and its applications in virtual circuit design and simulation. She guided the participants through creating Tinkercad accounts and demonstrated circuits involving LEDs, potentiometer, servo motor, ultrasonic sensor. Saima Alam then introduced the ESP32, its pins and functions, and the Arduino IDE. The participants engaged in hands-on activities, including programming the onboard LED, controlling LED brightness using a potentiometer and PWM, and building an ultrasonic sensor-based distance measurement circuit with an LED. She also showcased several ESP32-based projects to inspire participants to explore further.

IEEE NSU Industry Applications Society Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU SB WIE Affinity Group, organized a workshop titled “Canva Masterclass: Design Smarter, Present Better” as part of Skill Development Venture 5.0 on 4th August, 2026. The workshop aimed to help participants develop practical skills in Canva, graphic design, presentations and visual content creation.

The session was conducted by Md. Fahim Foysal, Chairperson of IEEE NSU Industry Applications Society Student Branch Chapter. With his experience in branding, visual communication, and content development, he introduced Canva and discussed its advantages, visual hierarchy, and the typical workflow of a design. He also explored various Canva features, including elements, apps, and frames, while highlighting common mistakes made by beginners. For a hands-on learning experience, the instructor demonstrated how to create a poster and encouraged participants to follow along. Through the demonstration, participants learned about fonts, icons, formatting, and other essential design elements. Finally, he showcased a video he made using Canva and shared practical tips. The session concluded with a short Q&A, followed by practical tips and encouragement for the participants to keep practising and further develop their design skills.

IEEE NSU Student Branch Women in Engineering Affinity Group in collaboration with IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter and IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter organized a workshop titled "Docker & Kubernetes Essentials" as part of the event “Skill Development Venture 5.0” on 3rd August, 2026. The event was organized to help beginners to know Docker & Kubernetes and explore its practical uses.

The workshop was conducted by Naimul Hasan, Software Engineer at Dynamic Solution Innovators Ltd. He introduced Docker and explained how it allows code to run in the same environment on different operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux. Then he explained the fundamentals of Docker, including containers, Docker architecture, images, Dockerfiles, and Docker Hub. For practical understanding, he demonstrated and built a simple name-calling system using Docker and explained the necessary commands step by step. The second part of the workshop focused on Kubernetes, covering concepts such as pods, nodes, containers, clusters, and services, along with Kubernetes' self-healing capabilities. He also encouraged participants to take free courses on “Code Cloud” to explore coding. The interactive session concluded with a Q&A segment, where participants clarified technical queries.
