Cox’s Bazar | SheSTEM Research Workshop: Breaking Barriers in Public Sector STEM

On 19 July 2026, SheSTEM hosted a landmark workshop at Himchari Hall, Ramada by Wyndham Cox’s Bazar, presenting findings from a national study on women’s participation in public sector STEM in Bangladesh.

The keynote research presentation was delivered by Rodoshee Tahsin (Policy Exchange Bangladesh), followed by a dynamic panel moderated by Omar Farhan Khan (LightCastle Partners) featuring: Md. Ajahar Uddin – Assistant Commissioner & Executive Magistrate, Cox’s Bazar, Ms. Madhuchanda Dewanjee – Assistant Professor, Cox’s Bazar Government College, Abhijeet Chowdhury – Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, and Dr. Md. Hashibul Islam – Principal Scientific Officer, Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute

Key insights from the research & discussions:
🔹Only 21% of women pursue tertiary STEM education, creating a pipeline challenge.
🔹Women remain concentrated in administrative roles, with limited representation in technical and leadership positions.
🔹Structural barriers: childcare, mobility, and biased recruitment continue to hinder career progression.
🔹Confidence-building, mentorship, and workplace reforms are essential to sustain women’s STEM careers.

The workshop reaffirmed: women’s capability in STEM is unquestionable, but systemic reforms in policy, recruitment, and workplace infrastructure are critical to unlock their full potential.

SheSTEM hosted its third report dissemination workshop, "Breaking Barriers and Building Pathways: Women in Public Sector STEM in Bangladesh," on 13 July 2026 at the Grand Palace, Sylhet.

The workshop presented findings from SheSTEM's research on women in public sector STEM and convened district administration officials, university academics, engineering and ICT professionals, public agencies, and the Department of Women Affairs for a substantive dialogue on women's entry, retention, and advancement in technical careers.

A panel chaired by Nazmul Kabir Al-Mehmud (LightCastle Partners) turned that evidence into lived experience, bringing together Dr. Md. Faruque Miah (Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, SUST), Prof. Dr. Muktarun Islam (Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, Sylhet Agricultural University), Dr. Shilpy Rani Basak (Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, SUST), and Dipak Ranjan Dash (Executive Engineer, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Sylhet). The conversation ran from shared household responsibilities and early career guidance to childcare, workplace safety, and the institutional reforms needed to retain women in technical roles.

Minhajul Abedin (CTO, BRAC IT Services Ltd.) and Irfan Bin Amdad Chowdhury (Regional Head, Industry & Infrastructure, Siemens) sharing insights on technology, industry, and the future of STEM.

📅 Day 2 brought ideas to the stage: 60 participants competed in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT), the STEM Bee tiebreaker kept the momentum alive, and speakers from renewable energy, telecommunications, healthcare, infrastructure, entrepreneurship, and STEM education pushed participants to think beyond the classroom. The event closed by recognizing the winners across the AI Hackathon, 3MT, Project Showcase, and STEM Bee.

Breaking Barriers and Building Pathways | Women in Public Sector STEM in Bangladesh

On 22 June 2026, SheSTEM convened district officials, academics, and public agency leaders in Rajshahi to share research findings on women in public-sector STEM and to identify concrete reform priorities.

The keynote by Rodoshee Tahsin (Policy Exchange Bangladesh) laid out stark data. Followed by a dynamic panel moderated by Omar Farhan Khan (LightCastle Partners), featuring voices including Suborna Rani Saha (Secretary, Rajshahi WASA), Dr. Md. Mahbubor Rahman and Dr. Mst. Shahnaj Parvin (University of Rajshahi), and Executive Magistrate Rashidul Islam, sharing real-world insights on role models, safe field postings, and workplace reform.

One clear takeaway: gender equality in STEM must be embedded in core governance systems rather than treated as a peripheral initiative.
