At SERA Bangladesh, we recognize leather as a cornerstone of the circular economy, skillfully repurposing byproducts into high-value materials that defy the "fast fashion" cycle. By prioritizing longevity and natural biodegradability, our local industry continues to champion a future where products are built to endure for decades rather than seasons.

Choosing leather is an investment in Bangladeshi craftsmanship and a commitment to quality over quantity. Its unique ability to develop character over time proves that high-performance exports and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, building a lasting legacy for our nation's trade.

SERA Bangladesh, together with iDEA TREE, is providing technical support to Samata Leather Complex Ltd. for the implementation of the LeatherTrace e-Traceability Solution under the “Leathertrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) in Bangladesh” project.

This initiative aims to strengthen transparency, accountability and digital traceability within Bangladesh’s leather value chain. Through close collaboration with partner tanneries and stakeholders, the team is facilitating the integration of the LeatherTrace system into existing operational processes, enabling real-time data capture, tracking of raw materials and improved documentation throughout the production cycle.

The solution supports the industry in meeting evolving international compliance requirements, enhancing supply chain visibility and promoting more sustainable and responsible leather production practices.

"Blue Plastic" represents the gold standard of responsible management - materials that are verified and tracked throughout their lifecycle - ensuring transparency, accountability and reduced environmental harm.

In a world where plastic leakage pollutes rivers and oceans, unmanaged plastic becomes a threat to ecosystems, biodiversity and human health. However, when plastic is digitally tracked and responsibly processed, it transforms from waste into a valuable resource within a circular economy.

At SERA Bangladesh, we specialize in data-driven traceability solutions across sectors such as plastics, agriculture and leather. By bridging the gap between data and sustainability, we help industries meet regulatory standards and embrace the circular economy.

Let’s trace responsibly. Let’s protect our planet.

LeatherTrace’s e-traceability solution, developed under the Leathertrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) project, has been successfully piloted at Anjuman Trading Corporation Ltd., Salma Tannery Ltd., Superex Leather Ltd., and Mitali Tannery Ltd.

The Bangladesh project team worked in close collaboration with these tanneries, facilitating the registration of slaughterhouses and collection centers, and providing comprehensive field support throughout the implementation process. Each tannery has effectively traced its entire supply chain, from slaughterhouse to finished leather, utilizing this advanced e-traceability solution.

A unique QR code containing comprehensive traceability information is generated, printed, and affixed to the final packaging, ensuring accurate and transparent delivery to the end destination.

This milestone represents a significant step toward digital traceability and sustainable practices in Bangladesh’s leather industry, ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust for all stakeholders.

The project is jointly implemented by the University of Northampton, SERA Bangladesh, IDEA Tree, Aston University, University of Hertfordshire, and the Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF). It is funded by the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Program, with funding and technical assistance from the UK International Development (FCDO) and UNCTAD.

A huge thank you to our dedicated team for their hard work in making this piloting phase a success! 👏

On July 31st, SERA Bangladesh together with its partners organized a Policy Workshop in Dhaka. The event was part of the project “Leathertrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP)”. Project partners included the University of Northampton, Aston University, University of Hertfordshire, IDEA TREE, and the Sustainable Leather Foundation. The workshop took place in the evening at The Westin Dhaka, Gulshan-2. It brought together key representatives from the government, leather industry, universities, and civil societies.

The focus was clear: to close policy gaps and create a roadmap for ensure environmental and social compliance, strengthen global market access, and support the shift toward a more sustainable and ethical leather industry.

A highlight of the session was the LeatherTrace e-traceability solution, developed by SERA, is almost ready to launch and it’s set to be a game changer for ethical sourcing and circular production!

The workshop featured expert talks, panel discussions, and group sessions where participants shared ideas, policy gaps and solutions. Key attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh Tanners Association, and leading exporters of the industry. This project is funded by The SMEP Programme (FCDO and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

As part of the ongoing LeatherTrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) project initiative, a comprehensive Carbon Calculator Workshop was successfully conducted at the Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology (ILET), University of Dhaka.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including faculty members, students from the Leather Institute, and project partners. They collaborated to explore practical methodologies for measuring and managing carbon emissions in leather production.

The session explored a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of carbon calculation to the application of sustainable practices in leather production. Participants gained hands-on experience with the tools and strategies necessary to effectively implement carbon management systems in their respective operations.

SERA Bangladesh, along with other project partners, also visited Leather Industries of Bangladesh Limited, a leather goods manufacturing industry in Hazaribagh, Dhaka.

Through this collaboration, Bangladesh’s leather industry is taking important steps toward adopting more eco-friendly practices, ensuring a sustainable future for both the sector and the environment.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to drive progress in one of Bangladesh’s key industries!

We are excited to share the successful completion of two key testing sessions for the LeatherTrace e-traceability solution — a transformative digital platform developed under the “Leathertrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP)” initiative, led by SERA Bangladesh.

On July 27, we had the pleasure of hosting an in-depth testing session at the SERA BANGLADESH office. The platform demonstration was joined by our esteemed project partners: A. F. M. Rasheduzzaman - iDEA TREE, Dr. Oluwaseyi Omoloso – University of Northampton, Deborah Taylor, PCQI, FSLTC – Sustainable Leather Foundation

Following the initial session, on July 28, our team and project partners visited two tanneries for a hands-on field test of the platform. We tested the LeatherTrace platform in real working conditions to see how well it can track important data throughout the leather production process. This trial was essential in checking and gathers important information throughout the leather value chain.

With the final tweaks being made, LeatherTrace is ready for real-world use, bringing us closer to a more transparent, sustainable, and competitive leather industry in Bangladesh.
We sincerely thank our partners for their support, helpful feedback, and continued dedication to innovation and responsible production.

We are excited about the progress and look forward to sharing more updates soon!

SERA Bangladesh, in collaboration with iDEA TREE, has successfully initiated the initial field-level testing of LeatherTrace Solution! This cutting-edge digital e-traceability solution, developed under the “LeatherTrace Bangladesh: Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) in Bangladesh” project, is set to revolutionize Bangladesh's leather sector.

Just yesterday, on July 8, 2025, our joint team conducted key registration activities in Tangail, including various collection centers (Pakutia Leather Hut and Gudams) and nearby slaughterhouses. This marks a major milestone towards establishing comprehensive digital traceability across the entire leather value chain.

This field testing is crucial to verify LeatherTrace's core functionalities in real-world conditions, ensuring we achieve end-to-end traceability, enhance transparency, and promote sustainable, circular, and export-compliant leather production in Bangladesh. We're excited about the future of a more responsible and efficient leather industry!
