The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), with support from the German Red Cross (GRC), organized a Lessons Learned Workshop on “Testing the Draft National Heatwave Early Action Protocol” on 17 August in Rajshahi.

The workshop brought together 50 participants from government departments, Rajshahi City Corporation, NGOs and other stakeholders to reflect on heatwave impacts, early actions and ways to strengthen preparedness.

The Administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation appreciated BDRCS’s efforts and emphasized the need for permanent cooling centres to protect communities from extreme heat. Participants also highlighted the potential of using existing roadside passenger shelters as cooling spaces.

Reflecting on the early actions implemented from 8–11 June, participants recognized miking, hand-fan messaging, courtyard sessions, school assemblies, street drama, safe drinking water, umbrellas and cooling stations as effective measures.

A key recommendation was to increase the number of cooling centres and establish them at strategic locations to reach more people and strengthen heatwave resilience.

🌱🌍 Building Youth Champions for Climate Resilience!
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), Rajshahi City Unit, through the RACE Project, successfully organized a 5-day Y-Adapt Master Training for School Champions from 25-30 July 2026 at Hotel Naz Garden, Bogura. The training brought together teachers, BDRCS staff, volunteers, and project personnel to strengthen their capacity in facilitating youth-led climate adaptation initiatives.

Throughout the training, participants explored climate change challenges, hazard mapping, systems thinking, climate adaptation planning, and effective facilitation techniques through interactive games, group work, practical exercises, and peer learning.

A total of 31 participants successfully completed the training and enhanced their knowledge and skills to independently facilitate Y-Adapt sessions and support young people in developing climate adaptation actions within their schools and communities.
Together, we are empowering young people to become leaders of climate resilience and create sustainable solutions for a safer future.

The training was honored by the presence of the Rezaul Karim Badsha (MP, Bogura-6), Chairman and Secretary of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Bogura City Unit, and Secretary of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Rajshahi City Unit , who joined the event opening and closing days and encouraged participants to become advocates for a greener, safer, and more climate-resilient future.

Heat Action Day 2026 🌱☀️
As part of the RACE Project, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), Rajshahi City Unit, successfully celebrated Heat Action Day 2026 across 15 project schools in Rajshahi City Corporation, engaging thousands of students in climate awareness and heatwave preparedness activities.

Students enthusiastically participated in the “Amar Sobuj Shohor (My Green City)” drawing competition and the interactive Heatwave Snake & Ladder Game, learning about climate resilience and heat safety in a fun and creative way. Winners received crests and reusable water bottles, while all participants received appreciation gifts, including tote bags, caps, and paper hand fans, from BDRCS.

We were honored by the presence of the Chairman of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Rajshahi City Unit, who joined one of the event days and encouraged students to become advocates for a greener, safer, and more climate-resilient future.
To promote environmental sustainability, tree saplings were handed over to participating schools for plantation within their compounds, contributing to greener and healthier learning environments. Together, we are empowering young climate champions with the knowledge and motivation to build safer, greener, and more climate-resilient communities.

A two-day Orientation on Financial Management and Compliance (3–4 August 2026) was jointly organized by the Planning & Development and Finance Departments of BDRCS under the German Red Cross (GRC) and BMZ-SSF funded SDSC (Strengthening DRM Structures and Capacities of the BDRCS) project. The orientation brought together BDRCS and GRC staff engaged in GRC-funded projects at NHQ and branch levels to strengthen their understanding of financial management, compliance, and accountability.

The training focused on promoting transparency and accountability, ensuring compliance with BDRCS standing orders, GRC and donor requirements, clarifying financial roles and responsibilities, standardizing financial operations and reporting, improving budget oversight and cost-efficiency, and enhancing preparedness for audits.

The RACE Project (Rajshahi Youth and Children in Advancing Climate Adaptation and Anticipatory Action within the Education System) is officially underway following a successful inception workshop in Rajshahi city.

The initiative aims to engage students and schools in advancing climate adaptation and anticipatory action within their education system.

Supported by BILD hilft e.V. „Ein Herz für Kinder“ and Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, German Red Cross Bangladesh Delegation , the project will be implemented in partnership with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society(BDRCS) to strengthen youth-led climate action and disaster preparedness.

The workshop brought together key government officials, education stakeholders, and school teachers for constructive dialogue on collaboration, local ownership, and integrating climate resilience (through Y-adapt toolkit and Anticipatory Action) into school communities.

Looking forward to the journey ahead in empowering young changemakers in Rajshahi city.

As the year comes to a close, we came together to reflect on a very tough and demanding year. Despite the challenges, the dedication, teamwork, and full contribution of our staff made it possible to move forward and continue our humanitarian work.

In my last week with Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, German Red Cross Bangladesh Delegation I met and had some serious conversation with two prominent German Diplomats - Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Mr. Johann Saathoff and Mr. Boris Mijatovic, Member of the German Parliament (Bündnis90/Die Grünen – The Green Party). On behalf of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society(BDRCS), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, German Red Cross Bangladesh Delegation and the people of Bangladesh as well as the displaced Rohingya population in Cox's Bazar, I urged the two dignateries and their colleagues to not forget the plight of the population movement crisis as well as the natural disasters risk that Bangladesh faces. The support of Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and German Embassy Dhaka is critical for Bangladesh so that it does not become a silent/forgotten crisis and people are not left behind. My hope is that we will continue our solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.
