One Health Bangladesh Multidisciplinary Collaborative Platform Working Together to Combat the Challenges of Emerging Infectious Diseases at Human- Animal- Environment Interface

The outbreak of avian influenza in 2007 demonstrated the inter-dependencies of human, animal and environmental health and vulnerabilities of Bangladesh to the eyes of policy makers and related sectors. In order to combat HPAI in Bangladesh intersectoral collaboration was initiated and multisectoral task force was formed to take measures against the spread of avian influenza. While government initi

ative was underway to bring related sectors together to control avian influenza, informal discussion began at Chittagong Veterinary Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in 2007 to bring professionals including veterinarians, physicians and wildlife specialists to articulate one health approach for controlling emerging infectious diseases including HPAI H5N1, Nipah and other re-emerging diseases. Positive responses from professionals working in human, animal and environmental health sectors prompted to convene a meeting to promote one health concept among health professionals, scientists, policymakers and environmental activities. A leading role of CVASU, Institute of Epidemiology and Diseases Control Research (IEDCR), International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) attracted other major agencies associated with animal health, human health and environmental health to be involved with the promotion of one health concept at working level. Professionals, scientists and social workers from nearly twelve government and nongovernment organizations decided to get together in a conference in Chittagong in March 2008 and made a Chittagong Declaration and formed a professional body, One Health Bangladesh, to promote and coordinate one activities. One Health Alliance of South Asia (OHASA) and Bengal Declaration (2009) signing a Memorandum of Understanding between relevant agencies/ministries that will create a communication network to report emerging zoonotic disease surveillance results and coordinate response activities; Establishing an Interagency Task Force (ITF) that meets between the governments that will be responsible for the development of standardized reporting guidelines and protocols both within and between government agencies. Creating a network of diagnostic laboratories in India and l to transform One Health agenda to a whole-of-a society movement

Congo Mystery Illness – Water Contamination Suspected

The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating a cluster of over 1,000 illnesses and at least 60 deaths in Congo’s Equateur province. Water contamination is now a strong suspicion in one affected village, though investigations continue. High malaria rates complicate diagnosis. Initial cases were linked to bat consumption, but the primary cause remains undetermined. Remote locations and resident fear are hindering access and investigation. Symptoms include fever, body aches, neurological signs, and gastrointestinal issues

Authorities investigating the deaths of at least 60 people in northwestern Congo suspect the water source in one of the areas may have been contaminated, the World Health Organization said Friday. But the agency said it's too early for any definitive conclusion.

WHO Extends Public Health Emergency for Mpox

The World Health Organization (WHO) has extended the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) designation for mpox. This decision is based on the continued rise in cases, geographic spread, and challenges in response efforts, particularly in regions experiencing conflict

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), following the third meeting of the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) Emergency Committee regarding the upsurge of mpox 2024, held on 25 February 2025, from 12:00 to 17:00 CET, concurs with its advice that the event continues to...

A mysterious viral disease has emerged in parts of western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in recent weeks, resulting in at least 53 deaths, officials say.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), clinicians are particularly concerned about the short period between the onset of what appear to be symptoms of a “hemorrhagic fever” and death – around just 48 hours – prompting fears that there could be a high number of deaths if the outbreak continues.

Officials have ruled out Ebola or Marburg virus, but say those infected are presenting symptoms of a ‘hemorrhagic fever’
