CMMS

CMMS The Centre for Men and Masculinities Studies (CMMS) is established to move forward with critical studies of the issues related to men and masculinities.

CMMSs’ mission is to bring together researchers, practitioners, and activists in conversation and collaboration to develop gender-equitable policies and practices incorporating masculinities. The Centre for Men and Masculinities Studies (CMMS) has three primary objectives:

(1) To promote and implement research works with collaborations among a pool of scholars, researchers and activists both with

in and outside Dhaka. (2) To put up national research with collaborations of both GO and NGOs in areas concerning issues regarding men and masculinities. (3) To operate as a hub for masculinities-related research around Bangladesh. The motivating factors that promulgated the idea behind the establishment of CMMS were the common notion about men that only men are responsible for all forms of violence, be it against men and be it against women. There is also a general perception that masculinity and patriarchies are synonymous or, to some extent, the same. In some instances, these misconceptions are not only incorrect but are very much biased and examples of narrow sightings. All men are not innocent again; not all men are oppressors. Positive attributes are also available in many men and boys. This unitary notion about men and boys needs to be changed, and men also need to come up with a positive outlook towards women, gender-related issues and issues related to women's empowerment. The only way that these perceptions and viewpoints can be changed by researching social problems related to men and masculinities. CMMS was established with this goal in mind.

Our Story

Brave Men Campaign would involve young men, particularly the school going male students aged between 12-15 to motivate them for taking action that would break men and boys silence on violence against women in the community. Violence against women remains a prevailing social problem in contemporary Bangladesh like most other countries of the world. Brutal attacks on women have become commonplace and widespread across the country. Daily news reports are filled with atrocities including physical and psychological torture, sexual harassment, sexual assault, r**e, dowry related violence, trafficking, forced prostitution, coerced su***de and murder. The rate of reported violent acts against women has risen consistently and at an alarming rate, especially since the early 1990’s. Recently we see a wave of sexual harassment (eve teasing) against girls in public places that also lead to several su***de cases. Fortunately only a few men commit such violence. Unfortunately we do not see most men to resist such violence. Frustratingly, this silence among men coupled with the popular portrayal of VAW in popular media is creating a situation in which VAW acts are becoming ‘normalized’. Moreover, such normalization of violence is producing a discourse in which VAW is gradually becoming an integral part of being ‘real man’. This discourse need to be encountered if we want to make sure a VAW free environment that is conducive to women advancement. Therefore, this pilot project in the form of action research wants to introduce a discourse on ‘brave man’ that would motivate men and boys, mostly the young boys, in schools not to commit such violence and resist such acts peacefully when and where possible by initiating a self-reflexive process through community dialogue. The ultimate aim would be to generate a campaign that would spread the message: ‘Any man can be real man but it requires courage to be brave. A man can only resist VAW if he is brave.’ Though initially the campaign is targeting Bangladeshi audience we strongly believe at certain stage it would be a global campaign. Proposed and developed by Dr Saikh Imtiaz the Brave Men Campaign is an initiative of the Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission Capacity Development Project (BNHRC-CDP) supported by UNDP, the Swiss Confederation, Sweden and DANIDA. Centre for Men and Masculinities Studies (CMMS) and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) is implementing the campaign. The Organizers National Human Rights Commission: Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission is the organizer of this campaign. After an in-depth survey on the human rights scenario in Bangladesh, the commission has set a strategic plan to prevent gender based violence by through this awareness campaign among the future generation of Bangladesh. United Nations Development Program: UNDP is providing foundational support to this campaign. It is providing financial, methodological and procedural support. UNDP is also a core organizer of this campaign. Centre for Men and Masculine Studies (CMMS): CMMS, a research based NGO, is implementing this campaign in Bangladesh with support of the above mentioned partners along with other organizing partners. United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB): UNYSAB, a leading voluntary youth organization formed on the ideologies of leadership and the United Nations at large, is supporting the implementation of the Brave Man Campaign being the youth representatives of the society.
