Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI) Developing the next generation of planetary stewards to strive toward a more sustainable Bangladesh.

BYEI is set up to educate, empower and inspire the Bangladeshi youth to take action for a prosperous and just Bangladesh. We believe that a new generation of planetary stewards with consciousness, capacity and motivation to act can transform the vision of a just, fair and sustainable Bangladesh into a reality. BYEI was founded in 2009 to draw attention to the ecological and climate crises, and to improve young citizens’ consciousness about the life-supporting nature and Earth systems through youth environmental actions. BYEI has now established itself as a key organization in the environment sector of Bangladesh, run by youth, for youth.

"The five days of the ECP 2022 camp were among the most important days in my life. It allowed me to realise my potential. During the camp, I spent time with my co-fellows and mentors, who came from diverse socioeconomic, geographical, and academic backgrounds but were special in their own ways. They had their own life experiences, stories, and local knowledge. I saw that everyone had their own perspective on the environmental crisis, but we were united in protecting our biodiversity, nature, and the environment.

For me, BYEI is not a traditional youth-led organisation. It is more like a family that shares the same values and works to protect nature through different initiatives. I feel proud to be a part of BYEI."

I hope BYEI will continue the wonderful work it has been doing: raising consciousness of the climate crisis through education and training, nurturing young leaders, and working with communities at the grassroots level to create meaningful change.

"My journey with Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI) has been one of those experiences that silently shapes you and stays with you. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to know and become a part of BYEI from the beginning of my university life. Since then, the Earth Champions Program 2022 Fellowship has been directly and indirectly influencing my academic and career pursuits. I was able to establish our first departmental club, the Dhaka University Public Administration Earth Club, which has had a great influence on 800+ students of our department and provided me with a great opportunity to practise environmental leadership through advocacy.

I always felt something special for nature, animals, and the environment around us. But BYEI's support, mentorship, environment, and knowledge resources helped me shape these feelings into something bigger than myself. I was able to gain the ability to link this knowledge with social justice, equality, human rights, and my academic field (public administration). BYEI is like a magnifying lens for me. With this ever clearer perspective, I can (or try to) see everything more deeply, analyse the underlying causes and effects, and feel the urge to do something about it. Being a part of BYEI has influenced my career pursuits. BYEI's Earth 360° program has been a key inspiration behind my youth-led project, 'Development of Hygiene Health Education and Empowerment of Women (DHHEEW).'

I pray and hope that BYEI will be able to create a much bigger network of mindful and impactful youth leaders who will be working for planetary stewardship across the public, private, and development sectors, leading towards a better Bangladesh.

BYEI is a big family, by the youth and for the youth, where kind and pure people are endlessly working to protect and make our world a better place.

BYEI was, is, and always will be a place close to my heart. The safety, mindfulness, and empathy I felt from my co-fellows and mentors meant a lot to me. When every person is able to feel that same sense of safety, care, and belonging, I believe that is the goal."

"Congratulations to BYEI on completing 17 wonderful years! I am very happy and honored to have been associated with BYEI for more than 14 of those 17 years.

My journey with BYEI began through the NEO Earth Olympiad back in 2012, and over the years, my engagement has grown stronger. It is now a privilege to serve as the Chair of the BYEI Board of Trustees.

What I have enjoyed most is the opportunity to work with young minds and future planetary leaders through the NEO program. Mentoring future planetary scientists and leaders has been rewarding and I personally value it very much.

I hope BYEI will continue to grow, expand, and scale its work in the years ahead, nurturing generations of planetary stewards who will lead efforts to protect life and nature, in Bangladesh and around the world, wherever they may be."

My journey with BYEI started with the Earth Champions Program (ECP) 2022. It was a life-changing experience that helped me explore a new side of myself. It made me realise that we have a responsibility towards our planet and, more importantly, that we have the capability to do something for it.

Over the years, BYEI has shaped numerous enthusiastic minds to look beyond simply seeing a problem and understand the root causes working behind the scenes. For the last 17 years, through various programmes, it has nurtured environmental stewards from schools to universities and even among professionals. What makes BYEI special is that it does not only promote environmental leadership, it plants the seeds of stewardship in young minds and helps them grow.

Wishing BYEI a very happy anniversary and an even more impactful journey ahead. I am grateful to have been a part of this journey and to have grown alongside a community that continues to inspire young people to understand, care for, and act for our planet.

"My journey with BYEI began through the National Earth Olympiad, where I had the opportunity to be part of the Green Day Training (GDT). Through interactive sessions and meaningful discussions, the BYEI team helped me explore environmental issues from a critical perspective.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that things we often see as progress or development may have hidden challenges, politics, or deeper impacts behind them; whether it is fast fashion, renewable energy technologies, or other environmental solutions. The problem-solving experience at GDT further strengthened my critical thinking and encouraged me to look beyond the surface.

BYEI inspires young people to think critically, understand challenges, and take meaningful steps toward solving them.

Happy 17th Anniversary, BYEI! As someone from outside Dhaka, I hope to see BYEI expanding across Bangladesh, reaching more passionate young minds at the grassroots level and empowering them to create meaningful change for the environment."
