Turning Drought into Opportunity: Kalistu Murmuโ€™s Path to Self-Reliance
Kalistu Murmu lives in Hiradanga village in the remote Barind tract of Chaor Union under Porsha Upazila in Naogaon District. The area is highly drought-prone with high temperatures and limited access to irrigation, making agriculture difficult and uncertain. He lives with his wife, son and daughter in a family of four that has long struggled with poverty and food insecurity.
As the eldest son in his family, Kalistu had to leave school before completing Class Eight due to financial hardship. Without owning any land, he worked as a day labourer on other peopleโ€™s land, earning just enough to survive. His income was often insufficient to ensure even two meals a day. To manage household expenses, he took loans from NGOs but was unable to repay them regularly. He also struggled to continue the education of his children due to ongoing financial pressure.
To improve his situation, Kalistu saved money from his labour wages and leased one bigha (33 decimals) of land next to his house. He cultivated paddy on this land, but due to drought, water scarcity and reliance on rainfall, he could grow only T. Aman rice once a year. This seasonal production was not enough to meet his familyโ€™s needs, and food shortages remained a constant challenge.
In 2025, during a period of severe hardship, Kalistu became connected with the Mosabai Adivasi Krishakdal (Farmers Group), which was formed through a survey under the Climate Action at Local Level (CALL) project implemented by Caritas Bangladesh, with technical support from the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh.
Under the supervision of field facilitator Kulsoom Khatun, he participated in monthly group meetings where different project activities were discussed. During one such meeting, he expressed interest in establishing a demonstration plot of biofortified zinc and iron enriched BARI Lentil-8.
In November 2025, with support from the CALL Project and technical guidance from the Sub-Assistant Agriculture Office of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Porsha, Kalistu adopted the cultivation of BARI Lentil-8 on 33 decimals of leased land. This biofortified and nutrient-rich variety is drought-tolerant and high-yielding, making it suitable for the local climate. With proper guidance and effort, he successfully cultivated the crop and achieved very good production.
The total market value of his production was approximately BDT 30,150, while the total cultivation cost was only BDT 3,500. This resulted in a net profit of BDT 26,650. With this income, Kalistu was able to support his household, improve family nutrition, continue the education of his son and daughter, and repay his outstanding NGO loans. He also reinvested by leasing additional land near his house to start commercial vegetable cultivation.
Building on this success, Kalistu has started cultivating other drought-tolerant and low-water crops such as BINA Mung-8. His household is now experiencing improved economic stability and better food security. There are visible progress and growing prosperity in his family compared to his previous situation.
Reflecting on his journey, Kalistu shared with emotion, โ€œI never thought my life would change like this. Now I can feed my family, support my childrenโ€™s education and dream of a better future.โ€ He expressed his sincere gratitude to the CALL Project for providing the support that ensured his success. He also expressed hope that other vulnerable families like his will benefit from such initiatives.
Kalistu Murmuโ€™s story demonstrates how access to climate-resilient and biofortified crops, along with technical support and community-based platforms, can transform the lives of vulnerable households. It highlights the importance of targeted interventions in strengthening food and nutrition security and creating pathways for sustainable economic self-sufficiency in climate-affected regions.

In the drought-prone landscape of Kash*tara village under Shironti Union in Sapahar, Naogaon, 30-year-old Mrs. Sathi Akter has transformed her householdโ€™s nutrition and income through climate-resilient agriculture. Living in a vulnerable, single-cropped area with limited rainfall and high temperatures, her family previously faced low agricultural productivity and restricted access to nutritious food.
Her journey changed through the Climate Action at Local Level (CALL) Programme, supported by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, funded by Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh and implemented by Caritas Bangladesh. After receiving training and technical support, she established a demonstration plot of BARI Sweet Potato-17, a beta-carotene enriched variety.
Cultivating on 10 decimals of land, she adopted improved practices including proper fertilizer management and advisory support through the Plantix mobile app. The crop, requiring minimal irrigation and offering low production cost, proved highly suitable for the local climate. Rich in vitamin A (around 9000 IU per 100 grams), it contributes significantly to reducing micronutrient deficiencies.
Her success was evident both nutritionally and economically. She earned approximately BDT 36,870 from produce and vine sales against a cost of BDT 6,790. Growing local demand enabled her to supply vines to 21 farmers, while also encouraging neighbours to adopt cultivation.
Mrs. Akter now plans to expand production and strengthen her livelihood further. Her experience highlights how biofortified, climate-smart crops combined with targeted training and support can drive sustainable income, improve nutrition, and build resilience among smallholder farmers.
