attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, intellectual disability, conduct disorders, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and impairments in vision and hearing) are becoming increasingly common worldwide due to more research and studies about them. (Source: EPA)
Autism is thought to be present in at least 1% of the children in UK & USA. And it is only one of many
neurodevelopment disorders (NDD) present around us. If we consider all the neurodevelopment disorders all over the world, the percentage would be much higher. This phenomenon has long been unknown and untouched especially in developing world where regular people have to struggle hard for basic human needs. Many people called these kids with disabilities mad or lazy, ostracized them and their families, and bullied to make their challenges even harder to deal with. In last few years in Bangladesh, there have been many talks and campaigns about autism and other neurodevelopment disorders. Many educated people are now aware of it and empathize with the neuorodivergent ones. But there are vast majority who are not, which include many parents and family members of the neurodivergent people. When a child is diagnosed with NDD, parents are at a loss about where to go, what to do, what are the avenues etc. Beaming Umbrella is small effort to spread awareness about the disorders and to share the avenues open for the people and their families in Bangladesh suffering from neurodevelopment disorders.
