Wildlife Conservation Society Bangladesh We Stand for Wildlife The WCS Bangladesh Program is part of the global WCS network and is registered with the Bangladesh NGO Affairs Bureau.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a not-for-profit conservation and research organization actively engaged in Bangladesh since 2004 to save wildlife and wild places through science conservation action, education and inspiring people to value nature. We envision a world where wildlife thrives in healthy lands and seas, valued by societies that embrace and benefit from the diversity and integrity of life on earth. In Bangladesh, we use science to DISCOVER and inform our conservation actions and policy recommendations; INSPIRE and engage people to care about wildlife and wild places; and PROTECT and restore priority species and wild places and reduce the key drivers causing the loss of wildlife and wild places. We leverage the opportunity of global conservation and sustainable development goals to support the next generation of conservation leaders.

Nowhere else in the country does the Bengal tiger survive, which means the fate of the species here rests entirely on the fate of one vast, tidal, half-drowned forest.

Reducing hunting pressure on Bengal tigers and their prey remains one of the greatest conservation challenges, requiring strategic, evidence-based, and effective approaches to monitoring and management. To address this challenge, WCS Bangladesh, in partnership with the Bangladesh Forest Department, has organized more than Most recently, Bangladesh celebrated a moment worth telling the world: a Bengal tigress, once caught in a poacher's snare, made a triumphant return to the eastern Sundarbans on July 12, 2026- after months of dedicated care from BFD. Her return symbolizes both resilience and the success of coordinated conservation action.

These achievements demonstrate how Bangladesh is turning conservation challenges into measurable successes through evidence-based patrol planning, better-equipped and better-trained rangers, and the active participation of local communities.

This International Tiger Day, we celebrate the partnerships that are transforming data into action and action into hope for Bengal tigers. Protecting tigers means protecting forests, biodiversity, climate resilience, and our shared future. Together, let us continue safeguarding the wild places that tigers call home.

WCS Bangladesh just wrapped up a two-day Community-led Marine SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) Training Workshop (22โ€“23 July 2026) in Char Kukri-Mukri, Bholaโ€“ engaging 17 fishing vessel captains and owners from Char Kukri-Mukri, Dhal Char, and Char Montaj into our growing Citizen Science Fishers network!

The fishers gain safety tools and support for their work at sea, and in return, they help us track whatโ€™s happening in the waters they fish, reporting their catch, bycatch, and other human activities and safely releasing entangled protected dolphins, whales, marine turtles, sharks, and rays.

Over the two days, the fishers received hands-on training on recording and reporting catch and bycatch information, and human activities using SMART, use of GPS, marine wildlife species identification, and safe release procedures.

Through practical, on-the-water style practices, these fishers are now equipped to be active Ocean Guardians in protecting Bangladesh's marine megafauna and supporting the monitoring of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Congratulations to our new Citizen Science Fishers for stepping up as Ocean Guardians!

The expansion and ongoing monitoring of MPAs through this citizen science initiative is supported by the Blue Action Fund under the Sustho Sagor project.

We congratulate the Government of Bangladesh, the Department of Fisheries, and all partners and MPA Working Committee members on the declaration of the Kuakata and Salimpur MPAs, a landmark achievement that brings Bangladesh's MPA coverage to 10.5% of its EEZ, marking an important step towards achieving the 30x30 goal under Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

This milestone reflects years of dedicated collaboration, scientific effort, and policy commitment of government and non-government conservation partners to protect the country's rich marine biodiversity.

WCS Bangladesh has been proud to support this process and remains committed to supporting the Government of Bangladesh in strengthening protection for threatened marine species and their habitats through the effective management of marine protected areas and will continue this work through the Blue Action Fund supported Sustho Sagor (Healthy Ocean) project.

The Government of Bangladesh today convened the 6th National CITES Seminar on "Strengthening Compliance with CITES in Bangladesh" at Hotel Sarina, Banani, Dhaka, bringing together senior policymakers, law enforcement agencies, academic institutions, civil society organisations, and international conservation partners to assess progress and chart a concrete roadmap toward full compliance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The seminar was organised by the Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD), CITES Management Authority, in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Bangladesh, with financial support from the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF).

The seminar featured an inaugural opening ceremony including a documentary film screening, followed by a presentation on recent CITES developments including decisions from CoP20 and their implications for Bangladesh, by Luke Warwick, Senior Director, Marine Species Conservation, Wildlife Conservation Society. The technical presentations, led by Nadim Parves, Manager, Marine Conservation Programme, and Samiul Mohsanin, Manager, Terrestrial Conservation Programme, presented the scale, trade routes, and key CITES-listed species involved in illegal wildlife trade in Bangladesh. Md. Jahidul Kabir, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests, BFD, provided a comprehensive review of progress achieved since the 5th National CITES Seminar held in October 2023. The seminar concluded with an open floor discussion on priority actions, inter-agency coordination, and a concrete roadmap for strengthening CITES compliance.

The open floor discussion produced a set of cross-cutting recommendations. Agencies called for a shift from reactive enforcement to intelligence-led disruption through crime hotspot mapping, a shared digital portal, and building awareness on the Wildlife Offence Reporting Tool (WORT) including Customs and other frontline agencies. Participants further agreed that CITES provisions must be embedded in the training curricula of every enforcement academy, that wildlife trafficking must be treated and prosecuted as organised crime, and that inter-agency coordination must be formalised from designated entry and exit points outward with fishers, fish traders, and coastal communities reached through sustained awareness at the source.

Senior officials who addressed the seminar underscored the depth of Bangladesh's commitment and the importance of sustained collective action across all government agencies.

Following the successful NDF Development Workshop held from March 30 to April 1, 2026, the Bangladesh Forest Department, with technical support from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Bangladesh, convened the NDF Validation Workshop today at Hotel Sarina, Dhaka. This marks a decisive step forward in Bangladesh's science-driven approach to shark conservation.

The workshop was honored by the presence of Mr. Md. Amir Hosain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of the CITES Management Authority of Bangladesh, as Chief Guest. It was chaired by Mr. Md. Sanaullah Patwary, Conservator of Forests, Wildlife and Nature Conservation Circle, Bangladesh Forest Department.

As a CITES member, Bangladesh is obligated to ensure that any international trade in Appendix II-listed species is scientifically justified and does not harm wild populations. Non-Detriment Findings (NDFs) are the cornerstone of this obligation. These evidence-based assessments determine whether the export of a species is safe for its survival in the wild. Without a validated NDF, trade cannot be authorized, making this process a powerful tool to combat overexploitation and promote sustainable fisheries management.

This workshop reflects the sustained and commendable efforts of the CITES Management Authority of Bangladesh in fulfilling the countryโ€™s international conservation commitments. With dedicated technical support from WCS Bangladesh and contributions from national and international shark and ray experts, Bangladesh continues to strengthen its national capacity for long-term, data-driven species management.

The workshop marks the final step for validating the NDFs developed for five requiem shark species:
- Spadenose, Spottail, Blacktip, and Graceful sharks
- A critical reevaluation of the Silky shark

This initiative has been made possible through the generous financial support of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), whose investment is helping translate science into lasting conservation impact.
