Inspiration behind the Nahar Rahman Foundation

The Nahar Rahman Foundation is the brainchild of Late Prof. Kamrun Nahar. An incredibly ambitious, humble and generous woman born in Faridpur, Bangladesh in the 1940s, Prof. Nahar shattered gender stereotypes set upon women by the then conservative society of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Political Sciences from the University of Dhaka, followed by a Master’s in Eductaion from Manchester University. During her time at Dhaka University, she was actively involved in student politics and activism at a crucial point of our nation’s history. She was a patriot, a feminist and a secular citizen. Prof. Nahar served as the vice principal of Central Women’s College in Dhaka for many years until she retired. She then continued to teach at Central Women’s University for many more years. She was an educator for over 30 years and received a lifetime recognition award from CWC.

She was also involved in funding, advising and running several non-profit initiatives. In private, Prof. Nahar supported the education of several children from underprivileged families. She believed every child has a right to an education, no matter their gender or their socioeconomic background. She also took part in many other charity initiatives throughout her life. Despite attempting to create a foundation which could help many more children, health and personal reasons prevented that from becoming a reality. Since her death on 26th June, 2020, her four grandchildren decided to finally create the foundation in her memory, and continue the good work she had done all her life.

The foundation is based on the surname of Prof. Kamrun Nahar (Dalia) and her late husband Barrister Shamsur Rahman (Selim).
