The Foundation for Law and Development (FLAD), in collaboration with Awaj Foundation, on 31.01.2026 organized a thought-provoking discussion titled “Women’s Vote and the Role of Working Women in the Future of Bangladesh” at the National Press Club, Dhaka.
The discussion brought together women political leaders, activists, and policy voices to reflect on the urgent need for impactful women’s leadership in Bangladesh, beyond symbolic or ornamental representation. Participants emphasized that while women occupy visible positions in politics, genuine political empowerment requires meaningful participation, independence in political identity, and stronger representation in decision-making spaces.
Speakers at the event included Taslima Akhter, candidate of Ganasamhati Andolon for Dhaka-12; Advocate Sabikun Nahar Munni of the women’s division of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami; and Advocate Humaira Noor, co-secretary of the National Citizens Party. The discussion was moderated by Nazma Akter, Executive Director of Awaj Foundation, and chaired by FLAD Chairperson Senior Advocate, Fawzia Karim Firoze.
The speakers highlighted several key issues, including:
• The need for substantive political participation of women, not merely quota-based or symbolic representation.
• Ensuring that women candidates are recognized as citizens and leaders, not defined by familial political identities.
• Creating stronger social and financial protections for women workers and ensuring their voices shape national policy.
FLAD remains committed to advancing inclusive governance, gender equality, and meaningful participation of women in democratic processes. Conversations like these are essential to shaping a future where women’s leadership is impactful, independent, and transformative.
