On May 9, 2024, The Department of Environment (DoE) in Barishal conducted a full-day orientation workshop on creating a plastic-free campus, in collaboration with the Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO.
In 2022, ESDO launched a project which has now become a priority as part of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) 100-day action plan. The project aims to promote plastic-free campuses in Bangladesh. Two schools, Barishal Govt. Girls High School and Barishal Zilla School, have been selected to participate in the project activities. By June, the MoEFCC aims to declare these campuses as completely free of plastic.
The aim of the workshop was to increase awareness of the negative impact of plastic and promote sustainable alternatives. Attendees were educated on the significance of reducing plastic usage, plastic pollution, microplastic pollution, and the necessary steps to create a plastic-free campus. They participated in group discussions, attended poster presentations, and shared their thoughts and feedback.
The workshop was kicked off by A. H. M. Rashed, who is the Deputy Director of the Department of Environment, Barishal division. The sessions were conducted by ESDO's team members, including Khalilur Rahman, Assistant Program Officer, Jannatul Ferdous Jubly, Program Associate, and Shanon Iffat Alam, Program Associate.
Furthermore, ESDO has already implemented Plastic-free Campus activities in 10 other schools across five divisional headquarters, namely Dhaka, Rangpur, Sylhet, Khulna, and Rajshahi. For more use the website link on the Plastic Free Campus.
