Betrayal is not a small matter in Islam.
Allah says:
“And if you fear betrayal from a people, then throw their treaty back to them openly. Surely Allah does not like those who betray.”
Qur’an 8:58, Surah Al-Anfal
Islam teaches us that trust is an amanah. Whether it is a promise, a responsibility, a relationship, a business dealing, or a secret entrusted to you, a believer should not treat it lightly.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us about the seriousness of betrayal:
“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.”
Sahih Muslim 59a
This does not mean that every person who falls into one of these sins is automatically a hypocrite in belief. Rather, the hadith warns that these are characteristics of hypocrisy that a believer must strive to remove from himself.
Never betray someone simply because they trusted you.
Never break a promise because you think the other person cannot do anything about it.
Never expose a secret that was entrusted to you.
Never cheat someone in business because you think you can get away with it.
And never assume that something hidden from people is hidden from Allah.
People may forget what you did. They may never discover the truth. You may even escape worldly consequences. But nothing escapes the knowledge of Allah.
At the same time, Islam does not teach us to respond to betrayal with another betrayal. The Qur’an commands justice, honesty and clarity. Even when dealing with an enemy who has a covenant, Allah prohibits treachery.
So guard the trusts placed in your hands.
Be someone whose word can be trusted.
Be someone whose presence gives people security rather than fear.
And remember: the approval of people is temporary, but the pleasure of Allah is what truly matters.
May Allah purify our hearts from hypocrisy, protect us from lying and betrayal, make us trustworthy, and help us fulfil every amanah placed upon us. Ameen.
