First comprehensive Architectural Guide Book for Dhaka City by all architecture.SUST Alumni featured today on the Daily Star.

The idea for the book, as the author Ar. Sayed Ahmed recalls, began almost incidentally at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin, back in November 2016. “I saw architectural guidebooks from many countries, including China and Iran,” he says. “That’s when I realised Bangladesh didn’t have anything like this.” What might have remained a passing observation instead became the foundation of a long-term project, one rooted in both curiosity and urgency and above all, patriotism.

Reading Architectural Guide Dhaka, authored by Architect and Assistant Professor Sayed Ahmed, I found myself thinking less about buildings as static structures and more as fragile records, stories that can disappear if no one chooses to document them.

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

With heavy hearts and profound reverence, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary academic and mentor:

Prof. Dr. Akhtarul Islam Chowdhury
Professor (Retired)
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering &
(Acting) HoD of the Department of Architecture,
Shahjalal University of Science & Technology, Sylhet

He peacefully departed this worldly life to meet his Creator on 24 July 2026 leaving behind a profound legacy of knowledge, leadership, and compassion.

His impact extended far beyond his own discipline. The Teachers, Alumni, and Students of the Department of Architecture at Shahjalal University remain eternally indebted to him and the Civil Engineering Department.

During the critical foundational years of the Architecture department, he took on the responsibility of acting head, becoming a true father figure and a steady guiding light for everyone involved.

We earnestly pray that Allah (SWT) forgives his shortcomings, envelopes him in infinite compassion, and grants him the highest abode in Jannat.

"Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." — (Al-Baqarah 2:156)
