In 2024, the Gaza Strip had its first variant poliovirus detection in wastewater in 25 years. Then, a 10-month-old child was confirmed to have contracted the disease. This triggered an urgent public health response to vaccinate hundreds of thousands of children.
Behind this operation were countless individuals working under extraordinary conditions, and among them are 4 women whose leadership, determination and commitment helped ensure that children in Gaza received protection against polio.
