Turning commitments into action for children and women. At a discussion titled “From Commitment to Implementation: The Government's 180 Days in Protecting the Rights of Women and Children,” seven development organisations, including Save the Children in Bangladesh, came together to reflect on progress and identify the gaps that still need urgent attention.

The discussion highlighted the need for stronger action on child marriage and child labour, greater investment in education and social protection, improved access to healthcare, and stronger measures to protect women and children.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj stressed the importance of promoting narratives grounded in facts, reality and mutual respect.

Abdulla Al Mamun, Sector Lead-Child Protection and Child Rights Governance, Save the Children in Bangladesh, said:
“Education is a remedy to many social problems affecting children. Save the Children is ready to support the Government to strengthen education and overall social protection for children and women.”

বাংলাদেশে চলমান হাম (Measles) প্রাদুর্ভাব শিশুদের জীবন ও স্বাস্থ্যের জন্য গুরুতর ঝুঁকি তৈরি করছে। ইতোমধ্যে ১,০০০-এর বেশি মানুষের প্রাণহানি হয়েছে। আরও প্রাণহানি রোধ এবং শিশুদের সুরক্ষায় এখনই জরুরি ও সমন্বিত পদক্ষেপ প্রয়োজন।

শক্তিশালী স্বাস্থ্যব্যবস্থা, টিকার সহজলভ্যতা এবং পরিবার ও কমিউনিটির কাছে সময়মতো সঠিক তথ্য পৌঁছে দেওয়া অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। শিশুদের সুরক্ষায় পরিবারগুলোকে সচেতন করা এবং সঠিক সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে সহায়তা করতে আমরা স্কুল ও কমিউনিটিতে সচেতনতামূলক কার্যক্রম চালিয়ে যাচ্ছি।

The measles outbreak in Bangladesh continues to put children’s lives and health at serious risk. With more than 1,000 lives already lost, urgent and coordinated action is essential to prevent further loss and protect children.
Stronger health systems, access to vaccination, and timely, accurate information for families and communities are crucial. We continue to work through schools and communities to raise awareness and help families take informed action to protect children.

We organized an inception meeting - Strengthening Community-Based Child Protection Systems for Prevention and Response to Child Protection Issues, including Child Labor in Gazipur. The project is being implemented in 12 wards of the district to strengthen community, passed child protection mechanisms and ensure the prevent of and response to child protection concerns.

This initiative is possible with funding support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and セーブ･ザ･チルドレン･ジャパン（Save the Children Japan）.

Only 36% of children in Dhaka have a park within a 10-15 minute walk of home, according to a new study written up for Devpolicy Blog by Rafeya Azad, Sajedrur Rahman and Giash Uddin.

Undertaken by Save the Children in Bangladesh, the study surveyed 403 children aged 8-18 across three planned neighbourhoods (Uttara, Banani and Gulshan) and four unplanned ones (Badda, Paltan, Mirpur and Mohammadpur), alongside focus groups and interviews with caregivers, park staff and policymakers.

The findings are stark. Dhaka allocates just 0.9% of its land to open space. Nearly two-thirds of children feel unsafe on the route to parks due to traffic, poor lighting and overcrowding. Only 23% believe parks are accessible for children with disabilities, and fewer than one in four think girls feel welcome. Parents' fears translate into tighter restrictions on girls' movement.

Azad, Rahman and Uddin argue that building cities for children does not require extraordinary solutions — but it does require political will, child-centred planning and recognition that play is a right, not a luxury.
