Movement in Refuge

Movement in Refuge Movement in Refuge uses sports and play to help young people unlock their potential and shape their future.

In Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, we work with refugees and host communities to create safe spaces where children—especially girls—can grow and thrive.

Today we celebrate the power of women in sport and all the women at the forefront of change.

Change that reclaims opportunity, agency and dignity for women everywhere.

Change that shifts stereotypes, norms and expectations in the right direction.

Change is constant when it comes to sports and gender. All over the world, all of the time. Sports and movement play an overwhelmingly positive role in refuge contexts especially for these young women.

While being small scale, in small shelters the work we do is so deeply inspiring. Watching girls develop new skills, play sports and have fun is are pathways to independence!

When you give girls space to move, you watch them rise.

A place to be powerful, make choices, discover what their bodies can do. Where sport isn’t just play—it’s hope and a future they get to shape.

Ramadan Mubarak!

This month carries profound meaning for Rohingya families living in Cox's Bazar. After fleeing persecution in Myanmar, they were unable to openly practice their faith, Ramadan is now observed in safety, in community, and without fear.

In the camps, Ramadan is marked by prayer, shared meals, reflection, and community — powerful reminders of resilience, faith, and togetherness.

We’re holding our community close this month, in Cox’s Bazar and around the world. May Ramadan bring peace, strength, and moments of light to all who observe.

This week’s highlight: Chess ♟️
We introduced a few chess boards into the camps and the reaction was immediate!

Curious eyes. Quiet focus. Real concentration.

It’s completely different from the sports and movement sessions we usually run. But that’s the point.

Not every child will pick up a ball.
Some will pick up strategy.
Chess builds patience, critical thinking, and confidence. It creates space for focus. It encourages learning, problem-solving, and resilience.

And with access to the internet, why couldn’t these young people one day compete, connect, and play with others across the world?

The potential is powerful.

New solar lights and fans.

Thanks to your donations we were able to install new systems into three refugee shelters last week - just in time for the roundnet tournament.

Small changes like these have a huge impact on the young women training indoors:
These spaces are dark and mostly windowless and after just a few minutes of practice, it’s hot, stuffy and lacking in fresh air.

We asked for your help to get these solar systems installed and boom! You responded.

Solar ventilation and bright lights are game changing and make such a difference to boost everyone’s confidence! This is just the start of our commitment to creating safe spaces where women can train, develop their skills and take part.

Thank you to those who have donated. Your contribution creates positive changes like these.

Get involved and find out where you can donate through the link in our bio.

If you’re able, consider becoming a monthly supporter!

In the Rohingya refugee camps, children grow up with very little opportunity to play sports and move.

We know how sport and play can create moments of joy, confidence, and connection even in the most challenging conditions.

A monthly donation of just $3 helps keep these sessions running and makes safe, inclusive play accessible to more children.

Find out more through our website.

This past week, MiR volunteers met in Edinburgh for conversations with students and educators on sport, displacement, and inclusive practice.

From interactive discussions to formal lectures, we’re digging into what happens when movement is treated as essential — not optional. Exploring lived experience, the limits of theory without practice, and the role of sport in safeguarding, mental health, and trauma-aware care.

Beyond the classroom, this is about thinking together. Testing ideas. Asking better questions. Exploring what ethical collaboration can really look like.

And it’s personal too. One of the largest in-person gatherings of MiR volunteers outside Bangladesh — time to reconnect, reflect, and build momentum.
