“I saw a little kid die,” recalled 18-year-old Rohingya refugee Iman Shorif, one of the few survivors left floating for days in the Andaman Sea after a small boat carrying around 70 people sank near the Thailand–Malaysia border on November 9.

He was rescued on Tuesday and taken into custody by Malaysian authorities. The death toll has risen to at least 27, with dozens still missing — lost in the sea during their desperate search for safety and dignity.

Once again, the world witnesses the same heartbreaking tragedy — Rohingya refugees risking their lives at sea because they have nowhere safe to turn.

It is time for stronger regional responsibility, humanitarian rescue operations, and international protection to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
