Statement on World Press Freedom Day
On behalf of the CRY - Organisation | 3,5,2026

On this World Press Freedom Day, we honour journalists and media workers who defend the right to information and speak truth to power.

We express deep concern over the ongoing crisis in Myanmar and the continued suffering of the Rohingya people. Since the military coup, press freedom has been severely restricted, with journalists arrested and independent media silenced. At the same time, the Rohingya crisis remains underreported, limiting global awareness and justice.

We stand in solidarity with all journalists who risk their lives to report the truth. We call on the international community to protect press freedom, support independent media, and ensure that the voices of the Rohingya and other oppressed communities are not silenced.

Freedom of expression is essential for justice, accountability, and peace.

Why are they suffering in Malaysian detention centers? Are they criminals? SUHAKAM (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) UNHCR in Bangladesh UNHCR Malaysia Ro Maung Aziz Jr. Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines

Many refugees and asylum seekers are being held in detention centers in Malaysia for an unlimited period of time. They are not criminals; they are people who fled their country to escape violence, persecution, and human rights violations.

Which Malaysian law allows authorities to detain them for years without a clear time limit? Is it fair or just to keep innocent people, including children, in such conditions without proper legal protection?

My main question regarding UNHCR in Malaysia is this: why are thousands of Rohingya people being newly registered, while at the same time the Malaysian government continues to arrest individuals who are already registered and hold UNHCR documents?

If these individuals are officially recognized and documented, why are they still being detained? And why does UNHCR in Malaysia not take effective responsibility to secure their release from detention?

This situation raises serious concerns about the protection and credibility of the system. What is the purpose of registration if it does not guarantee safety?

This situation raises serious concerns about human rights, justice, and humanity. Refugees deserve protection, dignity, and fair treatment—not indefinite detention

Statement on the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis

The Rohingya people continue to suffer unimaginable hardship, forced to flee persecution and denied basic human rights.

Many fall victim to human traffickers, while others risk deadly sea journeys in search of safety and dignity. Tragically, countless lives are lost along the way.

This is not just a regional issue—it is a global humanitarian crisis. Urgent action is needed.

Silence and inaction must end.

☘️ Be our Pioneering Rohingya Youth Fellow ☘️

The Rohingya people endure profound persecution and invisibility across South and Southeast Asia, living as stateless refugees denied citizenship, mobility, education, and agency. While crises bring fleeting public awareness and attention, Rohingya youth mostly remain unseen as thinkers, leaders, and history-makers. This fellowship counters that erasure by empowering you to reclaim your narrative through storytelling.

What are we looking for?

🌱 Rohingya youth (age 18-30)
🌱 Interest in strengthening your narrative building skills and creating impact through different mediums of storytelling.
🌱 English speaking and writing skills (basic to intermediate).
🌱 We strongly encourage Rohingya young women, young people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse youth, displaced and refugee youth, and others to apply for this storytelling fellowship.
🌱 We greatly welcome applicants connected to organizations, community groups, or networks; formal or informal, as this is an opportunity to scale impacts of our storytelling fellowship.

*How long will the fellowship last?*
The fellowship will last for 10-12 weeks and it will be held through online synchronous and asynchronous sessions.

For more info on the fellowship go to bit.ly/ReimaginingHopeInfo*

Register through bit.ly/Reimagining_Hope

Registration is open until Thursday, April 23rd 2026 23.59 (GMT +7)
