United in Remembrance, Solidarity, and Hope — 25 August 2026

On 25 August 2026, Rohingya organizations, leaders, youth, activists, community representatives, and members of the Rohingya diaspora came together locally and globally, both in person and online, to commemorate Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day and honor the victims and survivors of the atrocities that began on 25 August 2017.

Ahead of this important day, Arakan Hope Initiative (AHI) proudly recognizes and appreciates the active participation of Rh Junaid, Co-Founder & Deputy Executive Director of AHI, in the important meeting held on 24 August 2026.

The meeting brought together distinguished Rohingya and international voices, including Mr. John Quinley III, Director of Fortify Rights; Mr. Aung Kyaw Moe, Rohingya political leader and former Deputy Minister of Human Rights of Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG); Mr. Jaivet Ealom, Secretary-General of the Rohingya Consultative Council (RCC); and Maung Sawyeddollah, Founder & Executive Director of the Rohingya Student Network (RSN), alongside other Rohingya leaders, women representatives, youth activists, diaspora members, civil society representatives, and community-based organizations.

The discussions focused on the ongoing Rohingya crisis, current challenges, the importance of remembering 25 August 2017, higher education and opportunities for the younger generation, community development, and the future of Rohingya repatriation.

The meeting highlighted the urgent need to strengthen education, higher education, youth leadership, skills development, and sustainable opportunities for Rohingya children, students, and young people who continue to face prolonged displacement and uncertainty.

Participants also reaffirmed that Rohingya repatriation must be safe, voluntary, dignified, sustainable, and rights-based, with Rohingya identity, rights, citizenship, security, and dignity fully protected. A meaningful return must provide the necessary conditions for a safe, secure, and sustainable future in our homeland, Arakan State, Myanmar.

On this solemn occasion, AHI honors all those who lost their lives, were forcibly displaced, and survived the atrocities of 25 August 2017 and the years that followed.

We remember. We stand united. We continue to speak. We continue to hope.

AHI sincerely appreciates Rh Junaid’s continued dedication to Rohingya youth empowerment, community development, advocacy, and the pursuit of justice, dignity, rights, and a better future for the Rohingya people.

On 25 August, Arakan Hope Initiative - AHI solemnly remembers the victims and survivors of the Rohingya genocide and the atrocities that began in 2017. We honor those who lost their lives, those who were forced from their homes, and the survivors who continue to carry the memories of unimaginable suffering. Their stories must never be forgotten, and their voices must never be silenced.

Nine years later, the suffering of the Rohingya continues through violence, displacement, insecurity, and serious human rights concerns. AHI raises its voice against injustice and calls for accountability, protection, dignity, and equal rights for the Rohingya people. We remember. We speak out. We stand together for justice, peace, and a dignified future.

Arakan Hope Initiative (AHI) stands with Rohingya civil society organizations in rejecting the Myanmar military junta’s misleading statements regarding the repatriation of displaced Rohingya.

The Rohingya have the right to return to their ancestral homeland safely, voluntarily, and with dignity, citizenship, security, and full rights. Any repatriation process must be voluntary, safe, dignified, sustainable, and independently monitored, with the meaningful participation of the Rohingya community.

We call for an end to the denial of Rohingya identity, persecution, and misinformation. We also urge respect for international law and compliance with the orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The Rohingya’s return must be based on safety, dignity, rights, justice, and meaningful Rohingya participation.

Today, Arakan Hope Initiative AHI celebrates International Youth Day and recognizes young people not only as the leaders of tomorrow, but as changemakers today.

For Rohingya youth, growing up in displacement means facing uncertainty, limited opportunities, and separation from their homeland. Despite these challenges, they continue to learn, volunteer, advocate, educate, lead, and serve their communities with courage and hope.

Across Cox’s Bazar and around the world, Rohingya youth are contributing to their communities through education, humanitarian action, community service, advocacy, sports, and youth led initiatives. However, many continue to face restrictions, limited funding, fewer leadership opportunities, and barriers to meaningful participation.

Rohingya youth should not be viewed only through the lens of displacement. They are leaders, innovators, community builders, and important partners in creating solutions.

They need opportunities to lead, access to resources, meaningful participation, and support for their initiatives.

When we invest in Rohingya youth, we strengthen their communities and contribute to a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future.

5,000 Rohingya refugees in Malaysia may be sent back to Myanmar. Before this happens, we have to ask: back to what?

Repatriation without citizenship, safety, or justice isn’t a solution — it’s a repetition of the same crisis. The homes, land, and lives that were taken have not been returned. The systems that enabled violence against Rohingya communities have not been dismantled. And there is no international body with the power to guarantee anyone’s safety once they cross back over that border.

Real solutions start with self-determination — not returning people to the conditions that displaced them in the first place, and calling it resolution.

We believe dignity isn’t something to be sent back into danger for. It’s something worth building, wherever that has to start.

Joint Statement

We, the undersigned Rohingya Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), express our grave concern over the worsening humanitarian and human rights crisis facing the Rohingya people. We urgently call on the international community to restore humanitarian funding, strengthen protection, ensure accountability, and uphold the rights, dignity, and future of the Rohingya. The time to act is now.
