Keeping a home safer begins long before an emergency. It begins with understanding the risks and having the knowledge, support and resources to act when they arise.

In Cox’s Bazar, where fires, heavy rainfall and landslides pose serious risks in densely populated refugee camps, preparedness is about more than responding to emergencies. Families need practical safety information, community volunteers need the skills to respond, and emergency services need strong coordination.

With funding from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), Acted supports household fire-safety awareness and disaster preparedness in the camps. Recently, the Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defence (FSCD) conducted training in firefighting, first aid and search and rescue with Acted’s support, helping strengthen practical skills and coordination for camp-level emergency response.

“Resilience Starts at Home,” but preparedness is a shared responsibility. This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we recognise the combined efforts of communities, volunteers, emergency responders and institutions working to reduce risks before disasters occur.

Resilience in the camps is built through practical action- before risks become emergencies.

With support from World Food Programme, Acted Bangladesh is supporting community-based disaster risk reduction and resilience infrastructure activities in the Cox’s Bazar camps, including slope stabilization, drainage maintenance, access improvements and tree planting and care.

These interventions help address everyday challenges linked to waterlogging, erosion, unstable slopes and difficult movement during the monsoon season, while engaging camp residents in creating and maintaining safer, more accessible shared spaces.

Acted Bangladesh continues to work with WFP, communities and camp-level partners to strengthen practical, locally grounded solutions for safer and more resilient camp environments.

On 13 September, the Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defence (FSCD) began a Training of Trainers for Acted teams on Fire and Landslide Response, Basic & Advanced Firefighting, First Aid, Search and Rescue.

Conducted by FSCD with support from Acted Bangladesh, the training gives Acted teams the opportunity to learn directly from Bangladesh’s national fire and emergency-response authority while strengthening operational collaboration for camp-level preparedness and response.

The training is funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, supporting continued investment in practical preparedness for emergencies in Cox’s Bazar.

In the camps, small improvements can make daily movement safer and easier.

Through Site Management Support, Acted Bangladesh works with residents to identify practical needs and support community-led initiatives such as bridges, pathways and staircases.

In 2026, Acted has completed 54 community-led initiatives through voluntary and Cash-for-Work based participation, helping improve shared spaces and access routes based on community priorities.

With support from UNHCR in Bangladesh, Acted continues to support practical site improvements that are shaped by residents and coordinated with camp-level actors.

Before an emergency response begins, there is quiet work that often goes unseen.

At the Balukhali hub in Cox’s Bazar, Acted Bangladesh teams regularly check, repair and maintain emergency response equipment used in the camps. From portable pumps to Mobile Fire Fighting Units, this work helps ensure that equipment is ready when volunteers are called to respond.

In the narrow and densely populated camp environment, even a small technical issue can delay response. That is why routine maintenance, practical skills and daily readiness matter.

Through its Emergency Preparedness and Response activities, Acted Bangladesh continues to support trained volunteers, equipment readiness and camp-level coordination so that communities are better prepared before emergencies happen.

On World Humanitarian Day, Acted Bangladesh joins humanitarian colleagues around the world in remembering those who have lost their lives or faced serious risks in the course of humanitarian work.

During the ongoing monsoon season, slope stability remains a critical concern in the Cox’s Bazar camps, where heavy rainfall, erosion and dense settlements increase the risk of landslides, threatening lives, shelters and essential infrastructure.

Representatives from FAO and OCHA visited Acted-supported slope stabilisation works in Camps 17 and 20 Extension, implemented in coordination with FAOBangladesh and funded by United Nations OCHA.

The visit highlighted practical, life-saving, nature-based disaster risk reduction activities that help manage surface runoff, reduce soil erosion and improve safety around vulnerable areas.

Through training and Cash-for-Work participation, community members are actively contributing to slope maintenance and environmental restoration, helping ensure that risk-reduction efforts remain locally led and sustainable.

By reducing exposure to monsoon-related hazards, these interventions help protect communities, strengthen preparedness and save lives in some of the camps’ most at-risk locations.

Acted Bangladesh continues to work with communities to support practical actions that strengthen resilience, enhance preparedness and reduce life-threatening risks during the monsoon season in Cox’s Bazar camps.
