🌍 On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), Acted’s Site Management Support (SMS) and Community Based Protection (CBP) teams organized an inspiring art competition in the camp settlement, focusing on Emergency Preparedness and Response.
With support from Office of the Refugee Relief & Repatriation Commissioner, Cox's Bazar, in collaboration with UNHCR in Bangladesh, Rohingya Response ISCG Cox's Bazar, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society(BDRCS), BRAC, ActionAid Bangladesh, and other humanitarian actors, Acted joined an awareness rally and participated in Cyclone Preparedness, Anticipatory Action, and Response drills as a part of IDDRR observation.
In Cox’s Bazar, where densely populated camps with temporary shelters face high risks of fire, landslides, and cyclones due to their proximity to the Bay of Bengal, Acted continues to implement vital projects with EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, UNHCR in Bangladesh, and World Food Programme support to strengthen disaster preparedness and risk reduction in Cox's Bazar camps settlement.

🌍 World Rivers Day | Restoring Life to the Stream

The Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar are located on hilly terrain where, despite the absence of major rivers, several significant streams serve as critical ecological and community assets. These streams are essential for settlement hygiene and overall camp sustainability. Acted manages the canal systems in Camps 1W and 2W, which have become focal points for both ecological preservation and community well-being. In partnership with UNHCR in Bangladesh, Acted is implementing a transformative Watershed Management Project under the SuLMER framework: Sustainable Land Management and Environmental Rehabilitation, as part of Acted’s global commitment to the 3ZERO vision.

Through this initiative, Acted is rehabilitating degraded stream corridors and transforming them into vibrant green spaces. Interventions include stream slope protection, riparian gardening, and the installation of waste traps, which together help stabilize fragile ecosystems. Regular cleaning and maintenance further ensure the streams remain safe and functional. Communities living nearby are being engaged and sensitized on riparian stewardship, with a strong emphasis on reducing harmful practices such as waste disposal into water bodies.

This work is carried out in close collaboration with Camp-in-Charge (CiCs), sector partners, and community leaders, ensuring that environmental rehabilitation is closely integrated with disaster risk reduction, sustainable waste management, and nature-based livelihood opportunities. Once overlooked, these streams are now being revitalized as living symbols of resilience and renewal within the camps
