Youth Empowerment in Rohingya Camps: A Path to Hope

April 11, RYSC

Life in Cox’s Bazar’s Rohingya camps is filled with challenges. Many young people lack education, jobs, or hope for the future. Youth empowerment activities, like skill training, leadership workshops, and sports—are vital to change this. By teaching practical skills such as farming, tailoring, or first aid, youths gain ways to earn income and support their families. These skills reduce reliance on aid and build confidence, turning helplessness into hope.

Empowerment also creates leaders. Through teamwork and communication workshops, youths learn to solve problems and speak up for their community. They become voices for peace and change, guiding others during tough times. Activities like art, sports, or group discussions also help heal trauma. Playing games or sharing stories lets them express emotions, build friendships, and stay mentally strong.

Idle youths face risks like crime or early marriage. Empowerment programs keep them focused on positive growth. They learn to spread awareness about health, safety, and peace. A girl trained in health can teach her family; a boy skilled in carpentry can start a small business. These steps strengthen the whole community.

When youths are empowered, they inspire others. Their skills and leadership create jobs, unity, and progress. Over time, this builds a foundation for a brighter future. Investing in Rohingya youth today means nurturing leaders who can rebuild their community tomorrow. Every training session, every shared idea, lights a spark of hope in Cox’s Bazar.

Statement by Rohingya Youths for Society Change (RYSC) on UN Decision to Cut Food Rations for Rohingya Refugees

March 6, 2025

The Rohingya Youths for Society Change (RYSC) is deeply worried about the United Nations’ decision to cut food rations for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Starting April 1, 2025, the rations will be reduced from $12.50 to just $6 per month. This decision will make life even harder for over one million Rohingya refugees who are already struggling to survive.

The Rohingya people fled violence and persecution in Myanmar and now live in crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar. They depend entirely on humanitarian aid for food, as they have no jobs or opportunities to support themselves. The current rations are already too little, and this new cut will push families into hunger and despair. Many refugees, especially children and the elderly, will suffer from malnutrition and poor health.

This cut will also create more problems in the camps. Hungry and desperate people may turn to violence, illegal activities, or risky journeys to find a better life. Young people, who already feel hopeless about their future, may be forced into dangerous situations like human trafficking or illegal work. The camps, which are already tense, could become even more unstable.

The RYSC calls on the international community to act now. We ask donors and governments to provide the funds needed to stop this cut and save the lives of Rohingya refugees. We also urge the world to find a long-term solution for the Rohingya, including their safe return to Myanmar. Until then, we must not let the Rohingya people suffer from hunger and neglect. Together, we can make a difference and protect their lives and dignity.
