From Survival to Uncertainty: Woman shares how her life in

In this video, Nurul Nisa shares her journey from surviving a dangerous sea crossing to living for 16 years in Malaysia without a clear future.

Like many Rohingya refugees, she fled persecution and risked her life at sea in search of safety. Yet even after reaching Malaysia, the struggle did not end. Years later, many Rohingya continue to live in legal limbo, facing uncertainty, limited opportunities, and growing hostility and discrimination.

As anti-Rohingya rhetoric, online hate speech, and petitions calling for the removal of Rohingya refugees from Malaysia continue to spread, Nurul's story reflects the reality faced by thousands who are still searching for dignity, protection, and a place to belong.

Her story is a reminder that refugees are not seeking privilege. They are seeking safety, rights, and the chance to live with dignity. The challenges faced by Rohingya refugees require compassion, understanding, and lasting solutions, not exclusion and hostility.

Awareness Campaign: Early and forced marriage is not a solution to poverty, insecurity, or uncertainty.

Across the camps, many families face economic hardship and pressure from harmful practices such as the dowry system. Too often, girls are married at a young age in the hope of easing financial burdens. Instead, this can lead to loss of education, increased vulnerability, and limited opportunities.

The burden of dowry also pushes some families into debt and desperation, contributing to dangerous journeys by sea in search of a better future.

Every girl has the right to education, protection, and the freedom to choose her own future.

Together, we must end child marriage, forced marriage, and harmful dowry practices to build a safer and more dignified future for the Rohingya community.

Salma, Justice for Survivors. The Hague, Netherlands.

"In 2017, Rohingya people were brutally persecuted. Our families and children were taken, slaughtered, and shot dead. Even though I was a married woman, I was not spared from sexual abuse and torture. Boys, men, girls and women were r***d. Young children were thrown into the fire. Our houses were burnt down. We saw dead bodies of our Rohingya people scattered around. Is there no one in the world who can give us justice?"

This powerful testimony is from Salma, a survivor of sexual and gender-based crimes (SGBC) and other serious human rights violations. Salma is now a vital member of Shanti Mohila ('Peace Women'), a grassroots network of 400 Rohingya women who provide a lifeline to their community. Through their courageous 'door-to-door' outreach, they deliver essential trauma counseling and legal education, empowering women to confront the intertwined threats of domestic violence, human trafficking, and mental health crises. As Salma puts it: "Back in we did not have equality. Women also deserve to have equal rights, to seek justice, because they were also persecuted. With Shanti Mohila, we want to speak up together and to make our voices heard by the world".

On 12 January 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) commenced landmark hearings on the merits of the genocide case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar. This historic legal action seeks accountability for the atrocities committed during the 2017 'clearance operations' in Rakhine State, a campaign of state-sponsored violence defined by mass killings, systemic sexual violence, and the deliberate arson of hundreds of villages. These acts, which the United Nations has described as having clear genocidal intent, forced over 720,000 Rohingya to flee to . As the ICJ deliberates on whether Myanmar breached the 1948 Genocide Convention, the case remains a critical pursuit of justice for the more than 1 million displaced people now seeking safety in Cox's Bazar in neighbouring Bangladesh.

women and girls in ’s Rakhine State are facing escalating sexual violence in areas under Arakan Army (AA) control, including r**e, gang r**e and torture, according to a report by the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) released on May 14.

Amid mass displacement and worsening humanitarian conditions, the report says sexual violence — and the threat of sexual violence — are being used as tools as part of a broader system of intimidation and control targeting the Muslim ethnic minority group.

Sexual violence has long been weaponised against the Rohingya in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, where they have faced decades of violence, including during the 2017 genocide.

Nearly a decade later, accountability remains absent, while Rohingya communities continue to face systematic persecution, discrimination, denial of citizenship and severe restrictions imposed by both the Myanmarese army and the Arakan Army.

Sexual violence during conflict violates international humanitarian law and may amount to crimes against humanity, war crimes and acts of genocide.
