Asian University for Women (AUW) is most grateful to each and every donor who has contributed to this fund supporting AUW’s mission to educate young women of exceptional capacity from across Asia and the Middle East. We extend a special thanks to Sarah Porter for supporting AUW over the past 10 years and for her help in organizing this fundraiser with Women in Unexpected Places.
Founded in 2008 through an Act of the Parliament of Bangladesh, AUW is a liberal arts and sciences institution located in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The University offers high quality education across multiple fields: 1. Applied Math & Data Sciences; 2. Biological Sciences (Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology); 3. Chemical & Environmental Engineering (forthcoming); 4. Computer Sciences; 5. Economics; 6. Environmental Sciences; 7. Humanities (Philosophy, Literature, History and Religion); 8. Politics, Philosophy & Economics; and Public Health.
AUW is dedicated to the education and leadership development of talented young women, all of whom share a deep sense of courage, empathy, and outrage at injustice. 2,000 students currently attend and are recruited from 22 different countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Timor Leste, Vietnam, and Yemen. The University has a special commitment to identify and recruit extraordinary women from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and areas where access to higher education is limited. Students come from the tea estates of Assam, the ready-made garment industry, rural and remote villages, refugee camps, and war-torn regions. As a result, nearly all students are on full or near-full scholarships funded by generous supporters around the world.
To date, AUW has graduated over 1,800 women who have secured employment in the private and public sectors of their home countries. Alumnae work at organizations such as Citibank, HSBC, IBM, NASA, Save the Children, UNIQLO, World Bank, UN World Food Programme, UNHCR, UNICEF, World Health Organization, and others. Graduates have also pursued further studies at top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Columbia, Duke, Brandeis, Tufts, among others. Collectively, alumnae have completed 596 master’s degrees and 21 PhDs, with an additional 170 master’s degrees and 53 PhDs currently in progress. Many have earned prestigious postgraduate awards, such as the Chevening and Fulbright Scholarships.
We would like to thank all donors and Women in Unexpected Places for your generous support of AUW. Your donations ensure that talented women, who might otherwise be overlooked, have the opportunity to access a transformative education and become leaders and changemakers in their communities and beyond.
