💧 The global water crisis affects everyone, but not equally.

Where access to safe drinking water and sanitation is limited, inequalities deepen, and women and girls are often the most affected.

They collect water, manage it in their households and care for those impacted by unsafe conditions. Yet they continue to face barriers to participation in decision-making, leadership, funding and representation.

Addressing the water crisis requires a transformative and rights-based approach that recognizes women’s roles, strengthens their agency and ensures their voices are heard at all levels of water governance.

When water is managed as a shared resource, inclusive solutions can strengthen resilience, improve health and support more equitable and sustainable societies.

Through its global water programmes, UNESCO supports countries in advancing inclusive water governance by promoting science-based solutions, strengthening knowledge-sharing and fostering international cooperation.
