More than 400 students and teachers in Chattogram have taken a strong commitment to reduce plastic pollution, practice responsible waste management, and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Interactive Environmental Stewardship Campaign was held at Kadam Mubarak City Corporation High School and CDA Public School and College in Chattogram.

To help students transform their learning into everyday practice, separate waste bins were provided to the participating educational institutions. The campaign also encouraged the schools to introduce regular student-led “Cleaning Days”, creating opportunities for students to take ownership of their school environment.

A practical connection was also established between the educational institutions and local waste collectors. The collectors will regularly collect segregated plastic waste from the schools, helping ensure that recyclable materials are channeled into the recycling system rather than being discarded into the environment.

This approach connects awareness, behavior change, waste segregation, collection, and recycling turning a simple school activity into a practical example of plastic circularity.

বিশ্ব পরিচ্ছন্নতা দিবস ২০২৬ উপলক্ষে টাঙ্গাইলে তরুণরা কমিউনিটিভিত্তিক পরিবেশবান্ধব বিভিন্ন কার্যক্রমে নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছে। পরিচ্ছন্নতা কার্যক্রমকে প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্য হ্রাস, দায়িত্বশীল বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা এবং দৈনন্দিন আচরণে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনের বাস্তব উদ্যোগে রূপ দেওয়াই ছিল এসব কার্যক্রমের মূল লক্ষ্য।

ইউএনডিপি বাংলাদেশ, দ্য কোকা-কোলা ফাউন্ডেশনের সহায়তায় প্লাস্টিকস সার্কুলারিটি প্রজেক্ট বাস্তবায়ন করছে। প্রকল্পটির লক্ষ্য তিনটি শহরে প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্য সংগ্রহ, পৃথকীকরণ ও পুনর্ব্যবহার ব্যবস্থাকে শক্তিশালী করা এবং একটি কার্যকর সার্কুলার অর্থনীতি এগিয়ে নেওয়া। প্রকল্পটি স্থানীয় সরকার বিভাগের তত্ত্বাবধানে পরিচালিত হচ্ছে এবং স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে বাস্তবায়ন করছে ইপসা।

টাঙ্গাইল শহরে ১৩ থেকে ১৯ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৬ পর্যন্ত এই উদ্যোগ বাস্তবায়িত হয়। টাঙ্গাইলের ছয়টি যুব সংগঠন ও ক্লাব—ভলান্টিয়ার ফর বাংলাদেশ, হেল্পিং হ্যান্ড ফাউন্ডেশন, গ্রিন ক্লাব, ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইয়ুথ চেঞ্জ মেকার-টাঙ্গাইল, বাতিঘর আদর্শ পাঠাগার এবং বায়োডাইভার্সিটি কনজারভেশন ক্লাব—স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠী, শিক্ষার্থী, তরুণ, ব্যবসায়ী ও অন্যান্য অংশীজনদের সম্পৃক্ত করে বিভিন্ন কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করে।

প্রচলিত একদিনের পরিচ্ছন্নতা কার্যক্রমের বাইরে গিয়ে এই উদ্যোগে দৈনন্দিন বর্জ্য, বিশেষ করে প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনার ক্ষেত্রে বাস্তব ও দীর্ঘস্থায়ী পরিবর্তন উৎসাহিত করার ওপর গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়। কার্যক্রমের মধ্যে ছিল পরিচ্ছন্নতা অভিযান, চিত্রাংকন প্রতিযোগিতা, দেয়ালিকা, প্লাস্টিকের বিনিময়ে গাছ বিতরণ, সচেতনতামূলক সেমিনার, কুইজ প্রতিযোগিতা, গণস্বাক্ষরতা সংগ্রহ, বর্জ্য পৃথকীকরণ, সচেতনতামূলক প্রচারণা, স্থানীয় ব্যবসায়ী ও কমিউনিটির সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ততা, একবার ব্যবহারযোগ্য প্লাস্টিকের বিকল্প ব্যবহারে উৎসাহ প্রদান, ব্যবসায়ী ও জনসাধারণের অঙ্গীকার গ্রহণ, সৃজনশীল কার্যক্রম এবং সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে প্রচারণা।

ইপসা-র অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন কর্মসূচি ইডিপি এর ক্রেডিট অফিসারদের তিনদিন দিনব্যাপী "ক্ষুদ্রঅর্থায়ন কার্যক্রমের মৌলিক প্রশিক্ষণ" এর প্রথম দিনে ইপসার প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও প্রধান নির্বাহী ড. মোঃ আরিফুর রহমান অংশগ্রহণ করেন। ইপসা ওএলআর ইউনিট আয়োজিত প্রশিক্ষণে তিনি ক্রেডিট অফিসারদের সবসময় স্বচ্ছতা, সতর্কতা ও দক্ষতার সাথে ইডিপির কার্যক্রম পরিচালনার মাধ্যমে উপকারভোগী, সংস্থার ও নিজের সার্বিক উন্নয়নে ভূমিকা রাখার পরামর্শ প্রদান করেন।

To mark International Literacy Day 2026, YPSA organized vibrant celebrations under the Education in Emergencies (EiE) project across Rohingya Camps 8, 14, 15, 17, and 18 in Cox’s Bazar, site of one of the world’s largest displaced population settlements.

Embracing the global theme, “Literacy for people, the planet, and prosperity,” the events united learners, caregivers, and Community Education Support Group (CESG) members to promote literacy and secure safe, inclusive education for all affected children.

চট্টগ্রাম মহানগর এলাকায় যৌন ও প্রজনন স্বাস্থ্য এবং অধিকার (SRHR) সেবা জোরদার করার লক্ষ্যে চট্টগ্রাম সিটি কর্পোরেশন (চসিক) এবং প্রাথমিক স্বাস্থ্যসেবা কেন্দ্রের (পিএইচসিসি) মেডিকেল অফিসার এবং মাঠপর্যায়ের স্বাস্থ্যসেবা প্রদানকারীদের (প্যারামেডিকস) অংশগ্রহণে তিন দিনব্যাপী এক প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মশালার আয়োজন করা হয়।

গ্লোবাল অ্যাফেয়ার্স কানাডার অর্থায়নে এবং হেলথব্রিজ ফাউন্ডেশন অব কানাডার সহায়তায় পরিচালিত "হেলথ সিস্টেম রেসিলিয়েন্সি ফর ইমপ্রুভড এসআরএইচআর ইন বাংলাদেশ প্রজেক্ট"-এর আওতায় বাপসা-এর সহযোগিতায় "ক্যাপাসিটি বিল্ডিং ট্রেনিং অন জেন্ডার-রেসপন্সিভ এডোলেসেন্ট-ফ্রেন্ডলি অ্যান্ড কালচারালি সেনসিটিভ এসআরএইচ সেবা" শীর্ষক প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মশালা আয়োজন করে ইপসা।

গত ১৪ থেকে ১৬ সেপ্টেম্বর আগ্রাবাদের বেস্ট ওয়েস্টার্ন এসকেএস-এর সাম্পান হলে আয়োজিত এই প্রশিক্ষণ এর মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল স্বাস্থ্যকর্মীদের জেন্ডার-সংবেদনশীল, কিশোর-কিশোরী-বান্ধব এবং সামাজিকভাবে গ্রহণযোগ্য উপায়ে স্বাস্থ্যসেবা ও পরামর্শ প্রদানের প্রয়োজনীয় কৌশল শেখানো।

কর্মশালার উদ্বোধনী দিনে উপস্থিত ছিলেন প্রকল্পের টিম লিডার শামীমা আখতার চৌধুরী, সহকারী পরিচালক (সামাজিক উন্নয়ন) ফারহানা ইদ্রিস এবং ইপসার প্রকল্প ব্যবস্থাপক মোঃ ইব্রাহিম খলিল ভূঁইয়া। কর্মশালায় টেকনিক্যাল ও বিষয়ভিত্তিক অধিবেশন পরিচালনা করেন রিসোর্স পারসন ডা. শামীমা হাসনাত ও ডা. দেলোয়ার আক্তার সহ ইপসা, মমতা এবং বাপসা-এর প্রকল্প কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ। সামাজিক ও কাঠামোগত নানা বাধা দূর করে স্থানীয় কিশোর-কিশোরী ও তরুণদের জন্য নিরাপদ, গোপনীয় এবং বৈষম্যহীন স্বাস্থ্যসেবা নিশ্চিত করতে প্রশিক্ষণটি সহায়ক ভূমিকা রাখবে।

সমাপনী অনুষ্ঠানে চট্টগ্রাম সিটি কর্পোরেশনের প্রধান স্বাস্থ্য কর্মকর্তা ডা. মো. ইমাম হোসেন রানা ট্রেনিংয়ের গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরে আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করেন যে, এই আয়োজন চট্টগ্রামে মানসম্মত এসআরএইচআর সেবা প্রদানে অত্যন্ত কার্যকর হবে এবং তিনি প্রকল্প কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ ও ফ্যাসিলিটি সম্মিলিতভাবে কাজের মাধ্যমে এসএরএইচআর স্বাস্থ্যসেবা শক্তিশালী করার আহ্ববান ব্যাক্ত করেন। সমাপনী অধিবেশনে বাপসার প্রোগ্রাম ইমপ্লিমেন্টেশন অ্যান্ড ট্রেনিং কোঅর্ডিনেটর মো. হুমায়ুন কবিরও উপস্থিত ছিলেন। অংশগ্রহণকারী স্বাস্থ্যকর্মীদের মাঝে সনদপত্র বিতরণের মাধ্যমে সফল এই সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি উদ্যোগের সমাপ্তি ঘটে।

Following the tragic deaths of workers from toxic gas exposure at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries in Sitakunda, an official probe identified owner negligence but left crucial questions unanswered.

Writing for The Daily Star, ship recycling analyst Muhammed Ali Shahin from YPSA argues that the investigation explained how the tragedy happened—through deadly hydrogen sulphide build-up—but failed to address why systemic safety barriers failed.

From uninspected ballast tanks and missing gas checks to unverified "Green" yard certifications and unvetted workers, the piece highlights critical regulatory blind spots and calls for true oversight, institutional accountability, and enforceable reforms to protect shipbreaking workers.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Cox’s Bazar Upazila Child Labour Monitoring Committee meeting, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tahmina Akter emphasized the urgent need to protect children from hazardous labour and return them to education.

She described children as the nation’s future assets and called child protection a collective responsibility. In her speech, she particularly stressed the importance of regular monitoring in child labour-prone areas, including the hotel-motel zone of Cox’s Bazar, the dry fish processing area of Nazirartek, coastal areas, and other vulnerable locations. She also appreciated the coordination between YPSA’s Free Kids Project and relevant government departments in addressing child labour.

“SURAKKHA Project Holds Capacity Building Workshop on Multi-Hazard Early Warning in Chattogram”

Under the project titled “Scaling Up Multi-Hazard Anticipatory Action in Hilly Regions of Bangladesh (SURAKKHA),” a three-day capacity-building workshop on “Multi-Hazard Early Warning, Nature-based Solutions, and Organizational Policy and Compliance” is being held in Chattogram to strengthen anticipatory action capacity in the hilly regions of Bangladesh.
The workshop is being held from 7–9 September 2026 at Hotel Peninsula, GEC, Chattogram, bringing together project staff from Save the Children Bangladesh, RIMES, YPSA, and ASHIKA Development Associates. The project is funded by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), the SURAKKHA project is implemented by Save the Children Bangladesh in partnership with RIMES, YPSA, and ASHIKA Development Associates across Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Bandarban.
The SURAKKHA project is being implemented to achieve the overarching result of enhancing the adaptive capacity of communities and institutions to generate, communicate, and act on timely and inclusive early warnings; operationalize child-centered and gender-responsive anticipatory actions; and institutionalize multi-hazard anticipatory action for effective preparedness, response, and sustainable risk reduction in the hilly regions of Bangladesh.
The hilly regions of southeastern Bangladesh face significant exposure to landslides, flash floods, heavy rainfall and other cascading hazards, compounded by complex terrain and remoteness. The workshop is designed to strengthen participants' technical and operational readiness to anticipate and respond to these risks, while also refining how SURAKKHA translates that knowledge into implementation.

The event was attended by Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman, Founder and Chief Executive of YPSA; Mohammad Saimon Rahman, Senior Manager, Save the Children; Raihanul Haque Khan, Country Lead, RIMES; Fatema Mehernnessa Tania, Manager, Save the Children; Nasim Banu Shyamoli, Director, Social Development Department, YPSA.

In his remarks, Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman said that given the way various disasters are occurring at present, everyone must become more aware of their responsibilities, both as institutions and as individuals, adding that the recent disaster in Nepal has offered important lessons for all. He also highlighted several beneficial aspects of HAM radio in strengthening emergency communication.

The workshop will conclude with participants and partner organizations reaffirming their commitment to strengthening early warning systems, nature-based solutions and coordinated anticipatory action across Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban. With refreshed technical knowledge and a clearer implementation roadmap, SURAKKHA partners will be better positioned to protect vulnerable communities in Bangladesh's hilly regions from the growing impacts of climate- and disaster-related hazards.
