📌 Recruitment Notice: BBTech Bioinformatics Club (BBCU) Membership

We are excited to announce that we are recruiting new members for our club through a research-idea-based selection process. If you are passionate about bioinformatics research and want to develop your skills, this is a great opportunity for you!

📌 Application Process:

1️⃣ First, fill out the registration form. You can find the link in the comment section below.

2️⃣ Submit your research idea. After completing your registration, you must submit a one-page bioinformatics-based research idea (any idea whatever it is) by June 5th directly to Thosif Sir. Please note that it must fit on a single page. A list of possible research ideas is attached in the comment section for your reference.

Culture Media Agar, Choosing the Right Medium for Accurate Culture
🧫 Why Culture Media Matters
Using the wrong agar plate can delay identification, hide pathogens, or give misleading culture results.
Each culture medium has a specific role in microbiology:
1️⃣ EMB Agar • Detects Gram-negative bacteria • E. coli shows metallic green sheen
2️⃣ MacConkey Agar • Differentiates lactose fermenters • Pink colonies suggest lactose fermentation
3️⃣ XLD Agar • Used for Salmonella and Shigella • Black colonies indicate H₂S production

We are looking for passionate, curious, and research-oriented students interested in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, and Data Analysis.

Today, the BBTech Bioinformatics Club USTC - BBCU successfully hosted an insightful academic session titled “When Science Goes Wrong: Lessons in Research Integrity.”

We sincerely thank our respected speaker, Md. Thosif Raza, Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), affiliated with Heidelberg University and the University of Groningen, for sharing valuable perspectives on research ethics, scientific responsibility, and integrity in modern research practices.

The session talk was regarding the importance of honesty, transparency, and accountability in scientific work while encouraging students and researchers to uphold ethical standards throughout their academic and research journeys.

We also extend our gratitude to all participants for their active presence and engagement, which made the session meaningful and successful.

💊 ড্রাগ ডিজাইনিং ও ড্রাগ ডিসকভারি-তে প্রোটিনের গুরুত্ব 🧬

প্রোটিন জীবনের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অণু। এটি আমাদের শরীরের গঠন, কোষের কার্যক্রম, হরমোন নিয়ন্ত্রণ, রোগ প্রতিরোধ এবং অন্যান্য জৈব রাসায়নিক প্রক্রিয়ায় মূল ভূমিকা পালন করে। অনেক রোগ নির্দিষ্ট প্রোটিনের ত্রুটি বা অস্বাভাবিক কার্যকারিতার কারণে হয়। বিশেষ করে, যদি জিনে mutation ঘটে, তাহলে প্রোটিনের অ্যামিনো অ্যাসিড ক্রম পরিবর্তিত হয়, যার ফলে প্রোটিনের structure বা গঠন বদলে যেতে পারে। কখনো প্রোটিনের tertiary বা quaternary structure এমনভাবে পরিবর্তিত হয় যে তা অকার্যকর হয়ে পড়ে বা ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব সৃষ্টি করে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, সিকল সেল অ্যানিমিয়ায় একটি ছোট অ্যামিনো অ্যাসিড পরিবর্তনের কারণে হিমোগ্লোবিনের গঠন পরিবর্তিত হয় এবং অক্সিজেন পরিবহন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়।

ড্রাগ ডিজাইনিং-এ এই কারণে প্রোটিনকে লক্ষ্য (target) হিসেবে দেখা হয়। প্রথমে রোগের জন্য দায়ী প্রোটিন শনাক্ত করা হয়, তারপর তার 3D গঠন বিশ্লেষণ করা হয়। Structural information-এর উপর ভিত্তি করে গবেষকরা নির্দিষ্ট অংশে (binding site) ওষুধ কার্যকরভাবে যুক্ত হবে এমনভাবে তৈরি করেন। এই পদ্ধতিতে target-specific ওষুধ তৈরি সম্ভব হয়, যা পার্শ্বপ্রতিক্রিয়া কমায় এবং ব্যক্তিগত জিন ও প্রোটিন অনুযায়ী (personalized medicine) চিকিৎসা সম্ভব করে।

সংক্ষেপে, প্রোটিনকে বোঝা মানে রোগের কারণ বোঝা, mutation-এর প্রভাব নির্ধারণ করা এবং নতুন ও কার্যকর ওষুধ আবিষ্কারের পথ তৈরি করা। আধুনিক চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানে প্রোটিনের structural knowledge এবং mutation-সংশ্লিষ্ট তথ্যই রোগ নিরাময় ও ওষুধ ডিজাইনিং-এর মূল চাবিকাঠি।

Two teams from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at University of Science and Technology Chittagong have achieved outstanding success at the first-ever Hult Prize competition held at the university.

Team HAMAGURI emerged as the Champion, while another team TriRE secured the Runner-up position with the second-highest score in the competition. This is truly a proud moment for all of us. Winning business pitch competitions from a completely different academic background like biological sciences is a remarkable achievement.

On behalf of the BBTech Bioinformatics Club USTC - BBCU we extend our heartfelt congratulations to both teams and wish them continued success in their future endeavors.
