Handwashing with soap remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases and protect public health.
For sanitation and waste workers, hand hygiene is more than a daily habit. It is a critical part of occupational health and safety, helping reduce exposure to harmful pathogens while safeguarding their wellbeing.

To strengthen hand hygiene for frontline workers, we call for:
✅ Adequate handwashing facilities at SWM and FSM sites
✅ Stronger implementation of OHS guidelines and workplace hygiene measures
✅ Continued awareness and behaviour change initiatives for workers and communities

Safe sanitation is essential for healthy learning environments, quality healthcare and liveable cities. In Kushtia, Kushtia Paurashava, in collaboration with SNV, brought together educational and healthcare institutions through two consultation workshops held in September 2026 to strengthen the use of safe and professional faecal sludge management services.

The discussions focused on practical steps to improve sanitation, including better septic tank and pit management, maintaining sanitation records, scheduled desludging, and stronger coordination between institutions and the Paurashava.

Participants from schools, colleges, hospitals and healthcare facilities highlighted the importance of regularly accessing safe sanitation services to protect public health and maintain clean environments.

With support from SNV, Kushtia Paurashava has engaged a private sector operator to provide safe and professional faecal sludge emptying services across the municipality. Institutions were encouraged to make regular use of these services and contribute to improved sanitation outcomes.

The workshops brought together local government, education and health stakeholders around a shared commitment: safer sanitation services, stronger service delivery and a healthier Kushtia.

Bagerhat Municipality has signed a service agreement with Solution Link Private Limited to introduce professional door-to-door solid waste collection across all municipal wards through a service level agreement.

The agreement, signed on 7 October, marks an important step towards improving the quality, coverage and accountability of primary waste collection services in Bagerhat.

Under the three-year agreement, Solution Link will collect waste from households, businesses and public and private institutions, with service quality monitored through key performance indicators and a citizen complaints mechanism. The first six months will serve as a monitoring period, followed by a joint assessment by the municipality and service provider.

Bagerhat currently generates an estimated 22–25 tonnes of solid waste every day, around 70% of which is household waste.

With technical support from SNV under the Transitioning to Sustainable Urban Water Cycles in Bangladesh project, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Bagerhat Municipality is strengthening service agreements, performance monitoring, tariff systems, waste-collection vehicle registration and progressive expansion of primary collection coverage.

This initiative brings together municipal leadership, private-sector expertise and citizen engagement to build cleaner, healthier and more liveable urban communities.

In Khulna, 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡, a shared vision for better waste services is being translated into practical action. Under the leadership of the Administrator of Khulna City Corporation (KCC), and with support from SNV, senior city officials and ward-authorised officials from all 31 wards came together to strengthen primary waste collection services across the city.

The workshop explored practical steps towards professionalising waste collection, including:
🔹 Developing service standards, tariff arrangements, service agreements and provider registration mechanisms
🔹 Strengthening KCC’s regulatory role and accountability
🔹 Establishing a digital service management system for KPI tracking and performance monitoring
🔹 Using GIS-based mapping to identify service gaps and unserved areas
🔹 Strengthening data-driven planning for wider and better service coverage

Together, these efforts are helping KCC move towards a more professional, data-driven and citizen-focused approach to waste management. For Khulna, better waste collection is not only about managing waste. It is about strengthening urban services that work better for citizens.

On 2 September 2026, সিলেট সিটি কর্পোরেশন - Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and SNV brought together stakeholders in Sylhet to explore the way forward for implementing the Sponge City concept, building on findings from SNV’s Sponge City Survey.

The research assessed the condition of natural waterways, wetlands, reservoirs and water-absorption areas, highlighting opportunities to restore and strengthen the city’s natural capacity to retain, absorb and manage rainwater.

The proposed way forward includes:
🔹 Restoring canals and natural drainage channels
🔹 Conserving wetlands and urban water bodies
🔹 Expanding green-blue infrastructure
🔹 Introducing nature-based solutions such as rain gardens, permeable pavements, green roofs and urban water reservoirs
🔹 Strengthening the city’s drainage network and water management systems

Speaking as Chief Guest, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, Administrator, Sylhet City Corporation, highlighted ongoing efforts to recover water bodies, improve drainage and address flooding and waterlogging challenges in Sylhet.

The workshop also brought together SCC officials and other stakeholders. Turning Sylhet into a climate-resilient Sponge City will require more than infrastructure. It calls for collective action across government, development partners, private institutions, academia, civil society and communities.

On 3 September 2026, SNV hosted “𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: 𝐒𝐍𝐕 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬”, bringing together private-sector leaders, strategic partners and development practitioners in Bangladesh to explore how collaboration can turn ideas into solutions that reach communities at scale.

From clean water, biomass and renewable energy to clean cooking and carbon trading, the discussions highlighted the growing opportunities for the private sector to contribute to sustainable development in Bangladesh.

The event brought together perspectives from iFarmer, Tetra, City Bank, IDCOL and Malik Seeds, showcasing how innovation, finance, technology and partnerships can help address development challenges and create lasting impact, particularly for last-mile communities.

A glimpse from Asia Leadership Team Visit at Gazipur, Bangladesh

On 1 September 2026, an SNV leadership delegation visited Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) for a hands-on learning and knowledge exchange on urban service planning, institutional arrangements and service delivery across solid waste management, sanitation and industrial wastewater management.

The delegation included Patrick Sikana, Executive Director, Country Programmes; Mervyn Joullié Joullie, Deputy Director, Country Programmes – West Africa & Asia; and Country Directors, Putra Agung (Indonesia), Alex Grumbley (Laos), Christie Getman (Vietnam) Lenneke Braam (Nepal), and Ismène R.A.C. Stalpers (Bangladesh) alongside colleagues from SNV Bangladesh.

The visit brought together GCC officials, SNV colleagues, private-sector operators and industry representatives, creating a valuable space to see solutions in practice, understand operational realities and exchange experiences.

The delegation visited three key facilities:
🔹 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐓𝐒), Ward 47, Tongi – exploring the realities of secondary waste transfer and private-sector service delivery.
🔹 𝐙𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫 & 𝐙𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐋𝐭𝐝. – learning about industrial water management, sustainability practices and biological wastewater treatment.
🔹 𝐌𝐞𝐠𝐡𝐝𝐮𝐛𝐢 𝐅𝐚𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 (𝐅𝐒𝐓𝐏), GCC – seeing the faecal sludge treatment process first-hand and learning from the private operator’s experience, with support from SNV.

Beyond the site visits, the discussions highlighted how digital tools, institutional capacity, professionalised service delivery and public-private partnerships can contribute to stronger and more sustainable urban services.
Because meaningful learning does not happen only in meeting rooms. It happens when we see, listen, question and learn from what is happening on the ground.

Today, 29 August 2026, SNV and the PPP Wing of Invest Bangladesh Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the mainstreaming of Small-Scale Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) at the local level.

The MoU was signed by 𝐈𝐬𝐦è𝐧𝐞 𝐑.𝐀.𝐂. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬, Country Director, SNV Bangladesh, and 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐮𝐚𝐳𝐳𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐝, Director General, PPP Wing, Invest Bangladesh Authority.

Under the partnership, SNV and the PPP Wing will:

🔹 Develop practical RFQ/RFP, model contract and VGF templates
🔹 Pilot and validate the small-scale PPP guideline in a selected city
🔹 Strengthen the capacity of Local Government Institutions and private sector partners
🔹 Document lessons and support national dissemination

The initiative builds on SNV's longstanding collaboration with the PPP Authority and its work to strengthen local capacity for improved urban services.

With support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, this partnership aims to help local governments unlock private sector expertise, innovation and investment for more efficient, sustainable and resilient urban services.

As 𝐈𝐬𝐦è𝐧𝐞 𝐑.𝐀.𝐂. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐒𝐍𝐕 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, highlighted, the ambition is to move beyond guidelines and build the tools, capacity and practical experience needed to make partnerships work on the ground.
