Environmentalists in Barishal Demand an End to LNG Imports to Save Public Money. ------ On Thursday, December 18, 2025, a massive protest rally and demonstration were held in Barishal, demanding an immediate halt to LNG imports and the protection of public funds. Organized by the environmental organization 'Prantojon' and supported by the 'Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh' (JETNet-BD), the program began at 10:00 AM at the Zilla School intersection. After marching through the city’s main roads, the rally concluded with a protest meeting in front of the Ashwini Kumar Town Hall, drawing participation from environmental activists, students, and citizens from diverse backgrounds. During the rally, speakers highlighted the severe economic and environmental risks associated with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Subhankar Chakraborty, Convener of the Barishal Divisional Environment and Public Protection Forum, pointed out that LNG is extremely expensive and creates immense pressure on the national economy due to global market volatility. He cited research showing that every $ 1 invested in the LNG sector results in an $ 8 loss, whereas a $ 1 investment in renewable energy could yield a $ 9 profit. Ranjit Dutta, Secretary of CAB, added that LNG is not a sustainable solution but a dangerous fossil fuel that emits methane, exacerbating global warming and threatening food security and public health. The protesters presented a set of key demands to the government, calling for an end to import dependency and a shift toward domestic renewable energy. Subhash Das, Member Secretary of the Barishal Environment and Development Forum, argued that investing the massive funds currently spent on LNG into solar and wind power would solve the energy crisis permanently and create new jobs. The leaders demanded that taxpayers' money be used for sustainable power instead of being diverted to foreign corporations. They concluded by warning that if the government does not adopt an affordable, eco-friendly energy roadmap and reduce electricity prices, the movement will be intensified and spread across the entire country.

Major Demands:
Stop LNG imports and all new gas-based projects immediately.

Reduce import dependency and increase investment in domestic renewable energy (solar and wind).

Stop funneling taxpayers' money to foreign corporations; instead, fund sustainable power sectors.

Adopt eco-friendly energy policies to reduce electricity prices for the general public.

🌊 If the Coast Survives, Bangladesh Survives! 🇧🇩

Yesterday, the National Coastal Convention 2025 was successfully held at the Military Museum in Dhaka. As a co-organizer on behalf of Prantojon Trust, I delivered a solidarity speech for the people of the coastal region. The three and a half crore people living in the coastal belt are relentlessly victimized by salinity intrusion, erosion, and devastating cyclones. They are no longer simply asking for relief; they are demanding permanent and sustainable solutions! Our core demands are: strong embankments and freedom from the aggression of saline water; guaranteed livelihood security; and prioritizing the coast in national policymaking. We want to state clearly: the overall development of Bangladesh is impossible without the development of its coast. We urgently need 'Climate Justice.' This convention marks the start of a new chapter. We are fighting, and we will continue to fight—Insha'Allah, we will bring smiles back to the faces of the coastal people.

Development Partners or Debt Trap? The Role of MDBs in Bangladesh’s Energy Sector & Our Sovereignty

Today, I spoke as a panelist at a crucial session of the "Bangladesh Energy Conference 2025" held at the Bangladesh Military Museum in the capital. I would like to thank BWGED and the organizing committee for giving me this opportunity to represent Prantojon Trust.

The main focus of today’s discussion was the role of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) like the World Bank, ADB, or AIIB in Bangladesh's energy sector.

We acknowledge their contribution to the country's infrastructure development. However, we must also look at the other side of the coin. An impartial analysis reveals that their current investment strategies are becoming a cause of long-term risk for us.

In my speech, I highlighted three main areas of concern and our demands:

🚨 1. The Trap of Moving from ‘Coal’ to ‘Gas’ or LNG (Carbon Lock-in): Although MDBs have announced a move away from coal, in reality, they are pushing us toward expensive LNG. The Bhola IPP (AIIB), Rupsha 800 MW Plant (ADB), or World Bank guarantees for Petrobangla—all are "locking us in" with fossil fuels until 2043-45. This is contrary to the Paris Agreement.

💸 2. Debt Burden & ‘Stranded Assets’: The price of LNG in the international market is volatile. These gas plants, built on massive loans, risk becoming useless or turning into 'Stranded Assets' in the future era of renewable energy. Are we then walking the path toward bankruptcy?

☀️ 3. Misguided Policies on Renewable Energy: While they talk about ‘Green Energy,’ their focus remains on massive solar parks, which create issues regarding land acquisition and problems for local farmers. Yet, what we desperately need is "Decentralized Renewable Energy" (e.g., Rooftop Solar), where their interest is negligible.

📣 Our Demands & Recommendations:

✅ Say ‘No’ to Fossil Fuels: Stop passing off gas as a ‘clean fuel.’ No financing for new fossil fuel projects. ✅ Grants, Not Loans: As a nation falling victim to climate change, instead of burdening us with further debt, provide 'Grant-based Support.' ✅ Just Transition: Ensure that no worker or local community member is harmed as a result of the energy transition. ✅ Localization & Decentralization: Investment must increase in small-scale renewable projects at the local level rather than mega-projects, putting the control of electricity into the hands of the people.

Conclusion: MDBs can be our development partners, but they cannot be the drivers. We must determine our own energy security and sovereignty. We want a transparent, affordable, and eco-friendly energy sector—one that does not increase the debt burden but ensures sustainable development. We must not only calculate megawatts; we must make decisions thinking about nature and the future of the people of this country.

💡 Redirecting Finance from LNG to Renewable Energy: A Crucial Step!
It was a great privilege to participate in the orientation workshop titled “Redirecting Finance from LNG to Renewable Energy” organized by JETNet-BD (Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh) on November 27, 2025, at Hotel Lake Castle, Dhaka.
The rapid increase in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) investment in Bangladesh's power sector is creating new challenges—social, environmental, and economic. In this context, we held a detailed discussion on how a portion of the existing LNG finance can be redirected toward safe and affordable renewable energy sources, focusing on the potential for renewables and necessary policy changes.
Key Discussion Points:
The current LNG investment structure and its multi-faceted impacts.
The vast opportunities for transitioning to renewable energy.
Recent policy shifts and future directions for the sector.
The discussion was particularly enriched as participants were selected primarily from LNG-based power project areas and civil society members involved in Energy Transition campaigns, ensuring a grounding in real-world experience and practical insights.
Furthermore, we discussed future campaigns and coordination initiatives for JETNet members and developed a concrete Short-Term and Long-Term Campaign Plan.
We firmly believe that shifting away from LNG dependence towards renewables is the path to a sustainable and cost-effective future for Bangladesh. I am committed to supporting this crucial initiative.

BRI and Bangladesh: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward

On November 20, 2025, I had the opportunity to discuss China's 'Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI)—a key development partner for Bangladesh—at a roundtable titled "BRI in Bangladesh: Problems, Potentials and Way Forward," jointly organized by CLEAN and The Business Standard. China is currently our largest trading partner and a major driving force in infrastructure development. Since joining the BRI in 2016, investment commitments exceeding $24 billion in key sectors like transport, energy, and technology have played a crucial role in keeping our economic wheels turning. Projects like the Padma Bridge Rail Link, Payra Thermal Power Plant, and various grid developments are not only boosting our GDP but also creating opportunities to transform Bangladesh into a regional connectivity hub. Notably, Chinese technological assistance and finance could be a "game changer" in achieving our goal of 40% renewable energy by 2040.

However, we must also consider the other side of the coin. This immense potential is intertwined with significant risks and challenges. The interest rates on Chinese loans are relatively high, and a lack of transparency in many contract clauses raises concerns about a long-term "debt trap"—experiences in Sri Lanka and Pakistan serve as cautionary tales for us. Research indicates that approximately 59% of BRI projects are plagued by poor governance or pose environmental risks. Incidents like those in Banshkhali, involving allegations of labor and human rights violations as well as environmental pollution, are creating a trust deficit locally. Furthermore, maintaining a neutral stance amidst geopolitical conflicts remains a major challenge for Bangladesh.

Moving forward, our primary goal should be to transform this relationship into a model of "sustainable and equitable cooperation." To derive the maximum benefit from the BRI, we must prioritize our national interest above all else. We should carefully select projects that are both economically viable and environmentally friendly. It is imperative to pivot away from coal-based projects and increase investment in a "Green BRI" or the renewable energy sector. Simultaneously, bringing transparency to loan conditions and ensuring the accountability of Chinese firms is essential.

In conclusion, the BRI can undoubtedly act as a major catalyst for Bangladesh's economic progress. However, to reap its full benefits, we must proceed not with emotion, but with caution, transparency, and strategic balance.
