নদীনির্ভর জলেভাসা মান্তা জনগোষ্ঠীর শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা, ডিজিটাল দক্ষতা, আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি এবং সরকারি সেবায় প্রবেশাধিকার নিশ্চিত করতে স্থানীয় প্রশাসন, সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান, উন্নয়ন সংস্থা ও কমিউনিটির সমন্বিত উদ্যোগের ওপর গুরুত্বারোপ করা হয়েছে।

বরিশাল ক্লাবে অনুষ্ঠিত ‘স্থানীয় কর্তৃপক্ষের সঙ্গে সংলাপ’ শীর্ষক মতবিনিময় সভায় মান্তা জনগোষ্ঠীর অধিকার, বর্তমান চ্যালেঞ্জ এবং টেকসই উন্নয়নের পথ নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়। এশিয়া ফাউন্ডেশনের সহযোগিতায় ইয়ুথনেট গ্লোবাল বাস্তবায়িত ‘মান্তাকানেক্ট’ প্রকল্পের আওতায় এই সংলাপের আয়োজন করা হয়।

বরিশাল অঞ্চলের মান্তা জনগোষ্ঠী দীর্ঘদিন ধরে শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা, সরকারি সুবিধা গ্রহণ এবং আর্থিক ব্যবস্থায় যুক্ত হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে নানা প্রতিবন্ধকতার মুখোমুখি হয়ে আসছে। এই সংলাপের মাধ্যমে মান্তা কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা সরাসরি স্থানীয় কর্তৃপক্ষ ও সেবাদানকারী প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর কাছে তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা, চাহিদা ও প্রত্যাশার কথা তুলে ধরার সুযোগ পান।

অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বরিশাল সিটি করপোরেশনের প্রশাসক অ্যাডভোকেট বিলকিস আক্তার জাহান শিরিন।

এছাড়াও উপস্থিত ছিলেন মৎস্য অধিদপ্তরের বিভাগীয় উপপরিচালক, মহিলা বিষয়ক অধিদপ্তরের উপপরিচালক মেহেরুন নাহার মুন্নি, শেরেবাংলা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালের সহকারী পরিচালক, টুঙ্গিবাড়িয়া ও চরবাড়িয়া ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের চেয়ারম্যান, এশিয়া ফাউন্ডেশনের টিম লিডার মীর জুনায়েদ জামালসহ সরকারি-বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানের প্রতিনিধি, উন্নয়নকর্মী, মান্তা পরিচালনা কমিটির সদস্য এবং সাংবাদিকরা।

প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে বরিশাল সিটি করপোরেশনের প্রশাসক অ্যাডভোকেট বিলকিস আক্তার জাহান শিরিন বলেন, “আমরা মানুষ, আমাদের একসঙ্গে বাঁচতে হবে। আমার কাছে সব মানুষ সমান। মান্তা, হিজড়া, হিন্দু-মুসলিম—এ ধরনের কোনো ভেদাভেদ রেখে আমরা সামনে এগোতে পারব না।”

তিনি বলেন, “প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর মানুষের জন্য কাজ করা আমাদের দায়িত্ব। আমি মান্তাদের জন্য কাজ করব। তাদের যেকোনো প্রয়োজনে তারা সিটি করপোরেশনে আসতে পারবেন। আমি সবসময় তাদের পাশে আছি।”

সংলাপে সরকারি বিভিন্ন দপ্তরের কর্মকর্তারা মান্তা জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য বিদ্যমান সেবা সম্পর্কে অবহিত করেন এবং সরকারি সেবা গ্রহণের ক্ষেত্রে সহযোগিতার আশ্বাস দেন।

ইয়ুথনেট গ্লোবালের নির্বাহী সমন্বয়কারী সোহানুর রহমান বলেন, “মান্তা পরিচয়ের আগে তারা মানুষ। তাদের শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য, আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি ও সামাজিক মর্যাদা নিশ্চিত করা শুধু কোনো প্রকল্পের বিষয় নয়, এটি তাদের মৌলিক অধিকার।”

তিনি আরও বলেন, “মান্তাকানেক্ট প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে আমরা ডিজিটাল শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা ও আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তির সুযোগ তৈরি করছি। আমাদের লক্ষ্য হলো এসব উদ্যোগকে সরকারি ও স্থানীয় পর্যায়ের নিয়মিত সেবার সঙ্গে যুক্ত করা, যাতে অন্তর্ভুক্তি দীর্ঘমেয়াদি ও টেকসই হয়।”

ইয়ুথনেট গ্লোবালের সাধারণ সম্পাদক আরিফুর রহমান শুভ বলেন, “মান্তারা আমাদের সমাজ ও রাষ্ট্রের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। তাদের টেকসই উন্নয়ন নিশ্চিত করতে স্থানীয় প্রশাসন, সরকারি-বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান ও উন্নয়ন সংস্থার সমন্বিত উদ্যোগ প্রয়োজন।”

এই সংলাপে সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান, উন্নয়ন সহযোগী, স্থানীয় প্রতিনিধি, মান্তা কমিউনিটির সদস্য ও নাগরিক সমাজের প্রতিনিধিরা অংশ নেন। আলোচনায় মান্তাদের জীবনমান উন্নয়ন, সরকারি সেবায় প্রবেশাধিকার বৃদ্ধি এবং সামাজিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি নিশ্চিত করার ওপর গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়।

মান্তাকানেক্ট প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে ইয়ুথনেট গ্লোবাল মান্তা জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য ডিজিটাল শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা, আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি এবং সামাজিক মর্যাদা প্রতিষ্ঠায় কাজ করে যাচ্ছে।

Jhalakathi launches youth-led peace programme for climate security!

YouthNet Global, with support from Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, has launched the “Youth Climate Action for Peace” programme in Jhalakathi, creating a new platform for students to become climate leaders and peacebuilders.

Climate change is not only an environmental challenge; it is also affecting livelihoods, social harmony and justice. In climate vulnerable coastal communities like Jhalakathi, rising sea levels, salinity intrusion and changing livelihoods are creating new challenges. To address these realities, young people must not only be recognised as communities affected by climate change but also empowered as leaders who can develop solutions, strengthen resilience and promote cooperation.

Through years of youth mobilisation on climate justice, environmental protection and community resilience, YouthNet Global continues to create opportunities where young people can transform challenges into solutions.

In Jhalakathi, a climate vulnerable coastal district of Bangladesh, YouthNet Global is nurturing a new youth-led movement called the “Eco Olympiad”, inspiring students to become climate champions through knowledge, creativity and action.

Already, YouthNet Global has established Youth Climate Clubs in 10 schools across Jhalakathi, creating a growing network of young climate leaders where students can learn, collaborate and lead local climate solutions.

The “Youth Climate Action for Peace” programme will engage students from five educational institutions through climate education, leadership development, innovative thinking and peaceful problem-solving approaches. Through Green Action Days and a district-level Climate and Peace Fair, students will showcase their ideas and locally developed solutions for climate resilience, environmental protection and peaceful social transformation.

We express our sincere gratitude to the Jhalakathi district administration, educational institutions, teachers, students, Youth Climate Clubs, civil society representatives and all partners who are joining this journey and supporting youth-led climate action.

This initiative has received global recognition through the Changemaker Youth Grant 2026 by Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, where Bangladeshi youth leader Sazid Mahamud was selected among 11 young changemakers worldwide. This recognition reflects the growing importance of connecting climate action, peacebuilding and youth leadership.

By placing young students at the centre of climate action, YouthNet Global aims to nurture a generation of leaders who are not only aware of climate challenges but are empowered to lead solutions.

From Jhalakathi, we envision a wider youth-led climate movement across Bangladesh and beyond, where young people drive innovation, strengthen resilience and contribute to a peaceful and sustainable future.

Nature is not separate from us; we are part of nature. On Nature Conservation Day, YouthNet Global highlights the urgent need to protect, restore, and live in harmony with our ecosystems because the future of humanity depends on the health of our natural world.

From rivers and wetlands to forests and biodiversity, nature sustains our lives, livelihoods, and resilience. In Bangladesh, where millions of people are connected with climate vulnerable ecosystems, conserving nature is also an act of climate justice.

Through the Project, YouthNet Global is working with reserch and civil society organisations in Korail to support wetland restoration, strengthen community engagement, promote biodiversity conservation, and advance nature based solutions for a more resilient future. Healthy wetlands are vital for protecting ecosystems, securing water resources, supporting livelihoods, and helping communities adapt to climate change.

Young people have a critical role in safeguarding nature. By empowering youth and communities to become environmental stewards, we can restore damaged ecosystems and create a future where people and nature thrive together.

Today, we call on everyone to reconnect with nature, respect the limits of our planet, and take action to protect the ecosystems that sustain us.

A just climate transition is only possible when workers’ voices are heard, respected, and placed at the center of change.

YouthNet Global’s Executive Coordinator Sohanur Rahman facilitated a participatory workshop on “Strengthening Trade Union Solidarity for a and Climate-Resilient Industrial Transformation,” organized by Awaj Foundation and supported by Laudes Foundation.

The workshop brought together 32 representatives, including veteran and young trade union leaders, representatives from IndustriALL Global Union Bangladesh Council (IBC), worker organizations, and civil society actors. The engagement created an important space for intergenerational learning, dialogue, and collective action toward a fair and inclusive transition.

Participants explored the impacts of climate change on Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector, workplace risks, the role of trade unions, and the importance of building a climate-resilient and sustainable industrial future.

Bangladesh’s garment sector is deeply connected to global supply chains and provides livelihoods for millions of workers. Ensuring a Just Transition in this sector is not only a national priority but also a global responsibility.

📊 Three key messages emerged from workers’ voices:

👷 Job security remains a major concern

Workers highlighted concerns around job losses, extreme heat, health risks, and changing workplace realities, showing that climate change is already affecting workers’ lives and livelihoods.

🔨 Social dialogue is essential for a fair transition

Participants emphasized that stronger worker representation, social dialogue, collective bargaining, and partnership are critical to ensuring a fair and inclusive transformation.

🎙️ Skills development is key for the future of work

Training, awareness building, and reskilling opportunities will be essential to help workers adapt to changing industries while ensuring decent employment and livelihood security.

Discussions also highlighted the importance of ensuring that workers’ priorities are reflected in Bangladesh’s NDC 3.0 implementation process, Just Transition mechanisms emerging from COP30, and expectations ahead of COP31.

Through group discussions, Power Walk activities, and open dialogue, participants developed collective recommendations to strengthen worker-led climate action and build stronger collaboration among trade unions, civil society, and development partners.

A Just Transition is not only about transforming industries; it is about protecting people, creating decent work, and ensuring that no worker is left behind.

Advancing Bangladesh’s Just Transition Pathway: Putting People at the Centre of Climate Action 🇧🇩

Today, YouthNet Global’s Executive Coordinator Sohanur Rahman attended a high-level inter-ministerial consultation on integrating into Bangladesh’s NDC 3.0 Implementation Plan, convened by the Department of Environment under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Bangladesh, SANEM and Sida 🇸🇪.

The important dialogue brought together representatives from government, workers’ organisations, employers, researchers, youth and development partners to shape a climate pathway that goes beyond emission reduction and ensures decent jobs, social protection, equity and opportunities for all.

For Bangladesh, Just Transition is not only about moving towards a low-carbon economy. It is about building a people-centred transition that addresses the realities of climate vulnerability, including adaptation needs, loss and damage, climate-induced displacement, livelihood insecurity and resilience building for communities already facing the impacts of the climate crisis.

As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh continues to experience the growing impacts of floods, cyclones, river erosion, salinity intrusion and livelihood disruption. Therefore, Just Transition must strengthen adaptation, resilience and livelihood security alongside climate mitigation efforts.

During the consultation, Sohanur Rahman highlighted the importance of:
🌱 Dedicated climate finance for youth-led initiatives
🤝 Meaningful youth representation in climate governance and decision-making
💡 Investment in green skills to prepare the next generation workforce for a changing climate and economy

A successful Just Transition requires:

🌿 Creating decent green jobs and supporting green enterprises while preparing workers for emerging opportunities, including addressing challenges such as solar panel waste, battery waste and electronic waste management.

🤝 Strengthening social dialogue among government, workers, employers and communities to ensure inclusive climate action where no one is left behind.

💰 Expanding access to climate finance, technology, skills development and capacity building for vulnerable communities and youth-led solutions.

As a young negotiator advocating for Just Transition ahead of in Antalya, Türkiye, Sohanur also emphasised that the operationalisation of the Belém-Antalya Mechanism for Just Transition must become an opportunity to ensure that global climate commitments are matched with finance, technology support and implementation capacity for climate-vulnerable countries.

A truly successful climate transition will not only be measured by tonnes of carbon reduced, but by whether people can secure decent work, dignity and a resilient future.

🌾 Fields of Struggle: Farmers’ Lives in Joypurhat

Behind every plate of rice, every vegetable market, and every meal we share, there are farmers whose hands carry the weight of our food system. In Joypurhat, agriculture is not just an occupation; it is a way of life deeply connected with land, seasons, culture, and survival.

Every morning, farmers step into their fields with hope. Their hands prepare the soil, plant seeds, remove weeds, manage irrigation, and wait for harvest. They nurture the crops that feed our communities. Yet behind every green field lies a story of hard work, rising costs, uncertainty, and resilience.

Farmers in Joypurhat are facing growing challenges. The costs of seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, irrigation, labour, and transportation continue to rise, while many farmers struggle to receive fair prices for their produce. Those who grow food for millions often find themselves fighting to secure their own livelihoods.

Climate change is making their struggles even harder. Irregular rainfall, extreme heat, drought, cold waves, water scarcity, and changing seasons are creating new uncertainties in agriculture. For farmers, climate change is not an abstract issue; it is visible in cracked soil, damaged crops, delayed planting, pest attacks, reduced yields, and sleepless nights before harvest.

Those who contribute the least to the climate crisis are often among the first to face its harshest consequences. A single climate shock can destroy months of labour, affecting household income, children’s education, food security, and the future of farming families.

Women are also at the heart of agricultural resilience. Through seed preservation, livestock care, post-harvest activities, homestead gardening, and household management, rural women make essential contributions that often remain unseen. Their labour strengthens families, communities, and local food systems.

Despite these challenges, farmers continue to adapt, innovate, and protect the land that sustains us all. They are not only producers of food; they are guardians of our environment, culture, and future.

🌿 For millions living along the world’s coastlines, mangroves are not just forests. They are protection, livelihoods, and hope in a changing climate.

Today, July 26, we observe the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, also known as World Mangrove Day. Established by UNESCO in 2015, this day reminds us of the urgent need to protect, restore, and sustainably manage one of the planet’s most valuable coastal ecosystems.

Mangroves are more than trees. They are living climate shields, protecting communities from cyclones, storm surges, erosion, and sea level rise while storing carbon, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people.

After decades of global decline, mangroves are showing signs of recovery. A global study published in Science found that mangrove extent shifted from net loss to net gain around 2010. By 2023, global mangrove coverage was only about 0.5% below its level in the 1980s, showing that conservation and restoration efforts can help reverse environmental damage.

However, this progress does not mean the crisis is over. Newly restored mangrove forests cannot immediately replace the ecological value of mature ecosystems that have been lost. Conservation must go beyond planting trees. It must protect existing forests, restore degraded ecosystems, respect local communities, and ensure long term stewardship.

From the Sundarbans to the coastal islands of Bangladesh, communities have protected and lived with mangrove ecosystems for generations. For millions of people in Bangladesh’s coastal districts, mangroves are not just forests. They are homes, livelihoods, cultural heritage, and a first line of defence against cyclones, coastal erosion, and rising seas.

Those who have contributed least to the climate crisis are often the ones who depend most on nature’s protection. Protecting mangroves is not only about conserving nature. It is about defending the rights, dignity, and future of communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Across Bangladesh, young people are working with communities to protect ecosystems, raise awareness, promote nature based solutions, and build a more climate resilient future. Young people must be at the centre of mangrove conservation and restoration efforts, ensuring that climate action leaves no one behind.

On this World Mangrove Day, YouthNet Global calls for stronger commitments to conserve and restore mangrove ecosystems and place communities, biodiversity, and climate justice at the heart of global climate action.

Bangladesh: Celebrated for Climate Resilience, Yet Left to Pay the Bill!

At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Bangladesh’s story of climate resilience and survival was recognised globally. Over the past four decades, Bangladesh has dramatically reduced cyclone-related deaths through community action, early warning systems, cyclone shelters, adaptation and the dedication of millions of people.

This achievement deserves recognition.

But in another hall at the same conference, another reality was visible. While Bangladesh was celebrated for resilience, the global Loss and Damage response remained far behind the needs of climate-vulnerable countries. Those who contributed least to the climate crisis continue to face its greatest impacts.

Behind every climate statistic are real people. Children grow up with salinity, storms and uncertainty. Coastal farmers lose crops, fishers lose livelihoods, and informal workers face rising heat and climate risks.

Bangladesh’s greatest strength is the courage, knowledge and solidarity of its people. But resilience should never become an excuse for inaction.

Adaptation is essential for survival. A just transition is a reality that must protect workers, communities and future generations.

Bangladesh does not need sympathy. It needs solidarity, justice and fair climate finance.

Bangladesh has already demonstrated resilience. Now the world must demonstrate responsibility.

Climate justice cannot be measured by applause; it must be measured by action.
