Through practical, hands-on Food & Beverage Services Training in Cox’s Bazar, adolescent girls and young women under the Shopner Sharothi–Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) Project are building the skills, confidence, and professional mindset needed to pursue meaningful employment in the hospitality sector. From learning service techniques and customer interaction to understanding hospitality standards and workplace discipline, participants are developing practical competencies that prepare them for real-world opportunities and a more independent future.

The Shopner Sharothi–Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) Project is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), implemented by JAAGO Foundation Trust, and supported by UNICEF Bangladesh and Generation Unlimited.

স্কুলে যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা ছিল মাহিনুরের। কিন্তু প্রতিদিনের বাস্তবতা তাকে বারবার বই-খাতা থেকে দূরে সরিয়ে দিত। কখনো পরিবারের কাজে সহযোগিতা, কখনো নদীর ওপর জীবনের নানা প্রতিবন্ধকতা। এভাবেই ১৪ বছরের মাহিনুরের কাছে নিয়মিত পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাওয়া হয়ে উঠেছিল এক কঠিন চ্যালেঞ্জ।

মাহিনুরের মনে একসময় প্রশ্ন জাগে, মান্তা কমিউনিটির একটি মেয়ের পক্ষে কি সত্যিই পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাওয়া সম্ভব?

সেই অনিশ্চয়তার মধ্যেই মাহিনুর Manta Connect Project-এর “Access to Learning” প্রকল্প সম্পর্কে জানতে পারে। জাগো স্কুলে এসে প্রথমদিকে নতুন পরিবেশে নিজেকে মানিয়ে নিতে কিছুটা সময় লাগে তার। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে সে দেখতে পায়, তার মতো আরও অনেক শিশু নদী আর নৌকার জীবনের সঙ্গে যুক্ত থেকেও নিয়মিত পড়াশোনা করছে। তাদের দেখে নতুন করে সাহস পায় মাহিনুর।

স্কুলে আসতে আসতে বদলে যেতে থাকে তার নিজের ওপর বিশ্বাসও। আগে কোনো কিছু বুঝতে না পারলে চুপ করে থাকত সে। কিন্তু এখন প্রশ্ন করে, জানতে চায়, নতুন কিছু শেখার চেষ্টা করে। পড়াশোনার পাশাপাশি নিজের মনোভাব প্রকাশ করতে এবং ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে স্বপ্ন দেখতেও শিখেছে মাহিনুর।

মাহিনুর বলে, “আমি জানি আমাদের জীবন অন্যদের মতো নয়। নদী, নৌকা আর পরিবারের দায়িত্ব আমাদের জীবনের অংশ। কিন্তু তাই বলে আমার স্বপ্ন থেমে থাকবে না। আমি পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যেতে চাই এবং একদিন নিজের ও পরিবারের জন্য ভালো কিছু করতে চাই।”

নদী আর নৌকার জীবন এখনও মাহিনুরের প্রতিদিনের বাস্তবতা। কিন্তু সেই বাস্তবতার মধ্যেও এখন সে নিজের জন্য একটি নতুন ভবিষ্যৎ দেখতে পায়। যেখানে পরিবারের পাশে দাঁড়ানোর পাশাপাশি নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়ানোর স্বপ্নও রয়েছে।

Manta Connect Project – Access to Learning প্রকল্পটি মাহিনুরের মতো শিশুদের শিক্ষার সুযোগ তৈরি করার পাশাপাশি তাদের নিজেদের সক্ষমতার ওপর বিশ্বাস রাখতে এবং স্বপ্নের পথে এগিয়ে যেতে সাহায্য করছে।

In today’s competitive job market, practical skills can open doors to meaningful employment, financial independence, and a more empowered future. Through the Retail Sales Management training under the Shopner Sharothi–Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) Project in Cox's Bazar and Bandarban, NEET adolescent girls and young women are developing essential communication, customer service, problem-solving, sales, and workplace skills to prepare for real-world career opportunities.

Through interactive learning and hands-on skill development, the trainees are strengthening their confidence, discovering their potential, and building the capabilities to enter the workforce and pursue sustainable livelihoods. Beyond learning how to succeed in retail, they are gaining the knowledge and self-belief to make informed career choices, improve their quality of life, and contribute to their families and communities.

What changes when learning becomes more than an experience, and starts shaping how we see the world and our role in it?

The second residential bootcamp of the NexGen Graduate Fellowship Programme marks another meaningful step in the fellows’ journey from personal reflection to purposeful contribution.

As they continue learning together, fellows are encouraged to look beyond familiar perspectives, engage with different realities, exchange ideas, and strengthen their ability to think critically and work collaboratively.

The journey is not just about developing professional skills. It is also about building the mindset to listen with empathy, approach challenges with curiosity, and recognize that meaningful change is rarely created alone.

With every shared experience, fellows have another opportunity to grow not only as emerging professionals, but as individuals ready to contribute to Bangladesh’s development.

Nagorikota: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF)" is a development program funded by Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh, High Commission of Canada to Bangladesh, and the European Union in Bangladesh, and managed by GFA Consulting Group. যুব-নেতৃত্বাধীন সংগঠনের প্রতিনিধিরা, সমাজে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন আনতে আপনারা তৈরি তো?

নেদারল্যান্ডস দূতাবাসের সহযোগিতায়, জাগো ফাউন্ডেশন ট্রাস্ট এবং প্ল্যান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল বাংলাদেশ-এর যৌথ উদ্যোগে “সমতায় তারুণ্য: Youth for Equality” প্রকল্পের আওতায় আয়োজন করা হচ্ছে দুই দিনব্যাপী আবাসিক দক্ষতা উন্নয়ন কর্মশালা।

এই কর্মশালায় থাকবে জেন্ডার স্টেরিওটাইপ প্রতিরোধ, ডিজিটাল নিরাপত্তা, মিডিয়া লিটারেসি এবং অ্যাডভোকেসি নিয়ে গঠনমূলক আলোচনা। প্র্যাকটিক্যাল অভিজ্ঞতা বিনিময়ের মাধ্যমে যুব চেঞ্জমেকারদের দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি পাবে, যা তাদের ক্ষতিকর সামাজিক ধ্যানধারণা ভাঙতে এবং তৃণমূল পর্যায়ে নারীর অধিকার ও সমতার চেতনা ছড়িয়ে দিতে উদ্বুদ্ধ করবে।

পরবর্তীতে, এই প্রকল্পে নির্বাচিত যুব সংগঠনগুলো আর্থিক অনুদানের মাধ্যমে স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে যুবদের দক্ষতা উন্নয়নে এবং নীতিনির্ধারকদের সঙ্গে এ বিষয়ে অ্যাডভোকেসি কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করবে।

মান্তা কমিউনিটির অসংখ্য শিশুর মতো নদী আর নৌকাকে ঘিরেই শাকিলের বেড়ে ওঠা। পরিবারের সঙ্গে মাছ ধরার কাজে সহযোগিতা করার পাশাপাশি একসময় স্কুলেও যেত শাকিল। কিন্তু এক পর্যায়ে তার পরিচয় আর মাছ ধরার কাজ নিয়ে সহপাঠীদের নেতিবাচক মন্তব্য ও বুলিং ধীরে ধীরে স্কুলকে তার কাছে ভয়ের জায়গা করে তোলে। একসময় পড়াশোনা ছেড়ে আবারও নদীর জীবনে ফিরে যায় শাকিল।

সেই হারিয়ে যাওয়া সুযোগটি আবার ফিরিয়ে আনতে শাকিলের জীবনে আসে Manta Connect Project-এর “Access to Learning” প্রকল্প। তবে আগের অভিজ্ঞতার ভয় তখনও তার মনে রয়ে গিয়েছিল। আবার যদি কেউ তাকে তার পরিচয়ের জন্য ছোট করে?

এই ভয় কাটিয়ে উঠতে শাকিলের পাশে দাঁড়ান সুমন স্যার। তাঁর উৎসাহে শাকিল আবার স্কুলে আসতে শুরু করে। এখানে এসে সে দেখতে পায়, তার মতো আরও অনেক মান্তা কমিউনিটির শিশু একসঙ্গে পড়াশোনা করছে। কেউ কাউকে তার পরিচয়ের জন্য ছোট করে না। বরং সবাই মিলে শেখে, খেলাধুলা করে, নতুন বন্ধু তৈরি করে।

গত পাঁচ মাসে ধীরে ধীরে বদলে গেছে শাকিলের স্কুল নিয়ে ভাবনা। যে শিশুটি একসময় বুলিংয়ের ভয়ে পড়াশোনা ছেড়ে দিয়েছিল, সে এখন আবার নিয়মিত স্কুলে যাচ্ছে। ফিরে পেয়েছে নিজের ওপর বিশ্বাস, নতুন করে স্বপ্ন দেখতে শিখেছে।

শাকিল বলে, “আগে অন্যরা আমাকে নিয়ে কটু কথা বলত বলে আমি স্কুলে যাওয়া ছেড়ে দিয়েছিলাম। এখন আমি জানি, অন্য সবার মতো আমিও পড়াশোনা করতে পারি।”

নদী আর নৌকা এখনও শাকিলের জীবনের অংশ। তবে এখন তার জীবনে বই-খাতারও জায়গা হয়েছে। যে পরিচয় একসময় তাকে স্কুল থেকে দূরে সরিয়ে দিয়েছিল, সেই পরিচয় নিয়েই আজ সে আবার স্বপ্ন দেখছে।

এই প্রকল্পটি শাকিলের মতো শিশুদের জন্য এমন একটি শিক্ষার পরিবেশ তৈরি করছে, যেখানে পরিচয় নয়, শেখার সুযোগই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

At JAAGO and Volunteer for Bangladesh, we believe that awareness can save lives and preparedness can make all the difference. Through community engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives, we continue to help individuals and communities better understand disaster risks and learn how to respond when crises strike.

Because disaster preparedness isn't just about responding to emergencies. It's about protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, let's reaffirm our commitment to building safer, stronger, and more resilient communities through awareness, preparedness, and collective action.

The SHIELD Project’s Alternative Livelihood and Income Generating Activities (IGA) training is helping communities explore exactly that.

Through practical training on climate-resilient homestead gardening and handicrafts, women and youth strengthened skills that can support supplementary income, household food production and livelihood diversification. Secondary school students were also engaged in homestead gardening to build early understanding of climate adaptation and environmental responsibility.

The focus was not only on learning new skills, but on putting those skills into practice—from selecting suitable crops and managing gardens to developing marketable handicraft skills.

By connecting practical learning with livelihood opportunities, the initiative is supporting vulnerable communities in Khulna and Bagerhat to adapt, diversify and build a more resilient future.

The SHIELD Project is implemented by JAAGO Foundation Trust and supported by ChildFund Korea in Khulna and Bagerhat.

নারী ও পুরুষ কি আসলেই সমান? এই কঠিন প্রশ্নের সহজ উত্তর খুঁজতে আমরা আড্ডার আসর বসাই জাগো ফাউন্ডেশন স্কুলের একদল ক্ষুদে বিতার্কিকের সঙ্গে।

ছেলে ও মেয়েদের নিয়ে প্রচলিত নানা ধারণা, সমাজের বেঁধে দেওয়া নিয়ম আর জেন্ডার স্টেরিওটাইপ নিয়ে জমে ওঠে যুক্তি, পাল্টা যুক্তি আর মজার সব আলোচনা। তাদের কথায় উঠে আসে এক সহজ সত্য—সমতা কোনো জটিল ধারণা নয়, বরং যুক্তি, ন্যায্যতা আর পারস্পরিক সম্মানের বিষয়।

আজ আন্তর্জাতিক কন্যাশিশু দিবসে, “Shomotay Tarunno–Youth for Equality” প্রকল্পের আয়োজনে দেখুন আমাদের ক্ষুদে বিতার্কিকদের আড্ডার আসর। শুনুন, সমান সুযোগ ও অধিকার নিয়ে কী ভাবছে আগামী প্রজন্ম!
