Barbados National Trust These include a number of different cemeteries, gardens, historic houses, nature reserves, park areas, windmills and coastal areas.

The Barbados National Trust, founded in 1960, is an organisation which works to preserve and protect the natural and artistic heritage of Barbados and to increase public awareness of Barbados' historic and architectural treasures. The Trust also runs museums displaying a collection of artefacts owned and made by Barbadians, as well as an education programme, focusing on the island's history and what it means to the future. The Barbados National Trust has built a good working relationship with other National Trusts worldwide, equally with the organisations and their members, in places such as Canada, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and the United States

This guided tour combines natural and cultural heritage and is followed by fishcakes (a traditional snack with global origins), and a gorgeous soft drink - perhaps a basil tea (made with locally grown organic basil, bay leaf and other natural goodness).

The Long Pond Project and the Turner’s Hall Woods Project jointly held a community meeting at The Alleyne School on Saturday 10th October 2026. The focus of the meeting was whether these two proposed protected areas could be managed by members of the adjacent communities. Community-based management (or co-management) is a well-established approach to sharing responsibility between community groups and the government. It has worked for protected areas in a variety of situations around the world, including other Caribbean countries, but has not been tried in Barbados.
Community leadership in managing protected areas can ensure that the area benefits the community, including contributing to local livelihoods. The meeting was co-led by Project Coordinators Kellyann Allicott (Long Pond) and Ria Harrison (Turner’s Hall Woods). Participants included about 40 key stakeholders, primarily from St Andrew, known for their interest and leadership in the communities. They were introduced to co-management concepts, then collectively addressed several questions designed to determine if they thought co-management could work for these two areas. There appeared to be considerable enthusiasm for the approach.
The two projects are funded by grants from the Barbados Environmental Sustainability Fund (BESF) to The Land Conservancy Barbados (for Long Pond) and the Barbados National Trust (for Turner’s Hall Woods). Heritage Connects Us: Last week, we welcomed the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago to Barbados for four days of exploring our historic places, landscapes, food, culture and stories.
The visit was an important milestone in developing our heritage tourism product, while strengthening the relationship between our two Trusts and highlighting the many connections between our islands.

Heritage Connects Us: Last week, we welcomed the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago to Barbados for four days of exploring our historic places, landscapes, food, culture and stories.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Cows, Crops, Country hike at Walker’s Dairy in St. George!

We were delighted to spend the afternoon exploring this impressive working farm and learning more about the landscape, agriculture and operations that make it such a special part of Barbados.

A very special thank you to Paul Davis and the Davis family for welcoming us onto their farm and generously guiding us through their impressive operation. Your knowledge, hospitality and willingness to share your work with us made the experience truly memorable.

And, thankfully, the weather held up beautifully, giving us the perfect afternoon for a lovely walk through the farm and surrounding countryside.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the fundraiser. We hope you enjoyed Cows, Crops, Country as much as we did!

This is your chance to see a different side of the island as we walk through Walkers Dairy and the surrounding plantation lands.

Along the way, you’ll meet some of the dairy’s cattle🐄, discover the grasses grown on the farm, learn about Barbadian trees and their traditional uses, and get an inside look at local farming practices.

We’ll also explore how sargassum seaweed is being transformed into compost, turning a challenge affecting our coastlines into a useful resource for the land.
This is a chance to slow down, explore, and discover the connections between Barbados’ natural environment, agricultural traditions and the land that sustains us.

The Barbados National Trust joins the people of Barbados, the Caribbean and the wider world in mourning the passing of our National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield "Garry" Sobers. His extraordinary life stands as one of the greatest examples of Barbadian excellence, discipline and determination.

Sir Garry mastered and elevated the game of cricket, becoming widely regarded one of the greatest all-rounders in the sport’s history. In doing so, he placed Barbados firmly on the world stage and demonstrated that true greatness is not determined by the size of one’s country, but by the strength of one’s character, commitment, and vision.

As an organisation dedicated to preserving Barbados’ heritage, the Barbados National Trust recognises Sir Garry Sobers as an enduring part of our national heritage. His legacy is a powerful reminder that the greatest treasures of a nation are not only its historic buildings and landscapes, but also the remarkable men and women whose achievements have brought honour to its name.

May the Right Excellent Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers rest in eternal peace, and may his example continue to inspire the people of Barbados and generations yet to come.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Zakiya McKenzie from the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) and the University of Bristol to Barbados following the award of an INTO RISE Seed Grant supporting an exciting new interpretation project at Welchman Hall Gully.

The project will explore the role that medicinal and useful plants played in the lives of enslaved Africans and some that are still in use by locals today.

During her visit, Dr. McKenzie toured all Barbados National Trust sites and gained a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation work taking place at the ROAD Project.

We look forward to sharing more as this exciting project develops.
