​Last night, the junior dancers of the Malick Folk Performers had an unforgettable workshop learning "Afroship"—one of the iconic, innovative hand craft dance pieces from the Pinelands Creative Workshop 🇧🇧✨

​PCW’s Lead Choreographer, Shelly Durant-Forde, shared her incredible artistry, passion, and technique with the young dancers. Watching our future culture keepers embrace this powerful work was truly inspiring.

​Our Malick Folk Performing Company juniors and teens spent an intense week diving deep into regional traditions—focusing on the vibrant heritage of the Barbados Landship! 🇧🇧🇹🇹

The session was delivered by Shelly Durant-Forde- Lead Choreographer of the Pinelands Creative Workshop.

​From precise maneuvers to the infectious Tuk band rhythms, watching the youth bridge Trinidadian and Barbadian folk traditions with so much discipline and passion is everything. The future of Caribbean folk arts is in good hands! 🔥🙌

​Our young dancers (ages 8–10) in the Afro-Caribbean Dance class were putting in the work as they began discovering the rich history and expressive movements of the Belé! From mastering the graceful posture to learning the foundational footwork and drum cues, these future cultural keepers are stepping into tradition with so much energy and pride.

​Dancer Makeda Lowe shares her incredible experience taking part in the National Afro-Caribbean Dance Workshop hosted by Pinelands Creative Workshop (in collaboration with the Clara Lionel Foundation). From learning proper skirt techniques and movement vocabulary to warming up the floor and exploring cultural dance forms, Makeda highlights why continuing dance education and preserving our heritage is so important for young Black women in Barbados.
