Happy World Environment Day! 🌍🦋

Today, we’re celebrating our beautiful environment of Barbados— the vibrant heartbeat of our island and the very foundation of our shared future.

From the tiny pollinators buzzing in our gardens to the dry coastal forests protecting our shoreline, every living thing weaves a thread into the fabric of our culture here in Barbados.

At WIRRED and Walkers Reserve, ecological restoration is paramount. By breathing life back into vital wetlands and weaving biodiversity corridors across the land, we’re cultivating resilience and growing a regenerative legacy for generations to come.

Soil is one of the most vital ecosystems on Earth. Composed of organic matter, minerals, air, water, and microorganisms, healthy soil performs essential functions ranging from supporting biodiversity to cycling nutrients.

As WIRRED transforms Walkers Reserve into a living laboratory, soil regeneration remains a key component in revitalizing the land.

Our Regeneration Team monitors soil health by testing samples from numerous areas across the site. By analyzing biological life—such as nematodes and bacteria—under the microscope, our research team gains critical insights into soil health, including:

🍄‍🟫 Fungal to bacterial ratios
🧪 Nutrient availability and deficiencies.
🌴 The impact of land management by comparing managed areas of the reserve against non-managed areas, such as native forests.

Bees are the most important pollinators on earth, responsible for the survival of approximately a third of the food crops we consume globally. This , we celebrate these vital, dynamic pollinators and their role in our ecosystem.

Bees are valuable in the regeneration of Walkers Reserve, pollinating vital vegetation and contributing to the reserve’s ecosystem biodiversity. Our dedicated beekeepers monitor the variety of bee species at the reserve and care for their well-being.

Are you curious about bees and their importance to biodiversity? Visit our Bee Observatory Experience, where our expert beekeepers will share the secrets of bees, in a safe and immersive environment.

Welcome back to WIRRED’s 'Book Recommendations From the Team'!

Our book recommendation series is for environmental enthusiasts, book lovers and anyone eager to learn more about nature and our work at Walkers Reserve.

This week, Georgina Thornton, Project Coordinator at WIRRED, recommends “For the Love of Soil: Strategies to Regenerate Our Food Production”, by Nicole Masters. This book provides a fascinating examination into soil, a vital, living ecosystem upon which life on earth relies. She outlines important strategies to improve soil health and, therefore, plant and human health. At WIRRED, many of her strategies are at the heart of our regenerative work.

For more insight into the importance of soil for plant and human health, come visit our living laboratory and regeneration site, Walkers Reserve for an educational tour!

This Earth Day we’re moving beyond “giving back.” WIRRED hosted an Open House and Tour of Walkers Reserve, inviting corporations to join us in the regenerative transformation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

While traditional CSR often focuses on offsetting, we’re looking at what’s next: climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and community empowerment. Together with our corporate guests, we explored how to transition from passive donors to active stewards of the environment through a partnership with WIRRED, supporting Barbados’ journey toward Net Zero emissions by 2030.

Is your company ready to elevate its impact? We invite corporate leaders to partner with our living laboratory to explore the future of CSR. Contact us at [email protected] or 622-4097 to discuss corporate regenerative stewardship.

The Long Pond Guardians revisited Long Pond in mid-March for a session focusing on Plant Identification and conducting Dune Patrols.

📸 Dune Patrols: Fixed point photographs and observations are important to landscape monitoring. We used the designated photography stations at Long Pond to take and upload photos for our long-term monitoring database.

🌿Plant Identification : Armed with a quadrat and the book ‘Wild Plants of Barbados’ by C.M Sean Carrington, we trekked the dunes to master the difference between native versus invasive plant species.
