At the Barbados Archives

At the Barbados Archives Established in 1964, the Department of Archives is the official custodian and repository for archives in Barbados. Chandler.

In 1960 and 1961 a survey was carried out for the University College of the west Indies (now the University of the West Indies) to discover what historical records survived in Barbados. The Barbados Government made legal provision for the creation of an Archives Department by a 1963 order in council. This was followed by the establishment the Archives Department in 1964 under the leadership of our

first Archivist, Michael J. A reference service to the public began the following year as it was felt essential to show the value of preserving and exploring the information in the “old records” which date back to 1635. We then passed the Archives Act in 1988 and proclaimed in 2001. The Archives (Records Management) Regulations were subsequently drafted and became law in 2008.
