Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados

Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados aims to keep people's heart healthy and reduce NCDs The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados Inc. H.

is a non-profit organisation registered under the Companies Act 1982 of Barbados registration number 269 and under the Charities Act 1979-2 registration number 82. The Foundation was founded in 1985 as the Heart Foundation of Barbados and in 2006 embraced stroke to become the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados. The Foundation came to fruition thanks to the shared initiatives of The Lions Club o

f Barbados South, through its Health and Social Services Committee, then under the chairmanship of Mr. (Dru) Symmonds SCM, J.P., and Professor Trevor Hassell, Cardiologist, who was that time Head of the Department of Medicine and of the Cardiac Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. The Chief Medical Officer of Health's report for several years has ranked disease of the heart and blood vessels as a leading cause of death in Barbados as indeed it is internationally. It is against this background that the Foundation brings together physicians and laymen committed to voluntarily addressing this major health problem. The Foundation is a non-governmental organisation and receives no funding from government. Therefore the organisation is very heavily dependent upon donations and fees to carry out our work and relies considerably upon the financial support of individual Barbadians. Our motto "Everybody has a heart" speaks to the fact that all of us as individuals should be committed to living healthy lifestyles.

"We must become champions of change in our communities and workplaces..."

Speaking at the Health & Wellness Conference, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Davidson Ishmael, reminded us that addressing non-communicable diseases is not just a healthcare issue, it is a national responsibility.

Healthy workplaces, healthier communities, and better health outcomes begin with the choices we make every day.

We cannot continue to place the burden on children while ignoring the environments shaping their choices.

Children are growing up surrounded by marketing designed to influence what they want, what they ask for, and ultimately what they consume.

Protecting children's health means creating environments that support healthy choices not undermine them.

🎥 Listen as Nicole Foster, Chairperson of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition explains why government must help make the healthy choice the easy choice.

The numbers are alarming. The consequences are real.

An estimated 42% of childen in Barbados are living with overweight and obesity, increasing their risk of serious health conditions at a younger age.

Addressing this crisis requires more than individual action. It requires parents, schools, communities and policymakers working together to create healthier environments for our children.

🎥 Watch as Stacia Whittaker, Deputy Chairperson of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition discusses why action is needed now.

🎤 On Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Hope For The Future 3.0, our youth advocates hit the streets of Bridgetown, Barbados, with our Yes/No paddles to spark conversations about unhealthy food and drink marketing in schools.

As young people, we know that the environments around us shape our choices. That's why we're speaking up and calling for school spaces that support our health and wellbeing—not marketing that pushes unhealthy products.

The responses showed that many people understand the issue and want to see healthier options for children and young people.

👀 Watch to the end to hear what healthy food choices some of our interviewees would like to see in schools!

Now we want to hear from you: Should junk food marketing be restricted around children?
