Today, 5 October, we mark World Architecture Day under the theme “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”

The theme calls on architects to help make safe, adequate and affordable housing accessible to everyone, through design, research and engagement with housing policy.

For Barbados, it connects directly to the current discussion about ageing housing estates, derelict properties and new housing developments, including the concerns raised by Lower Burney residents.

In his World Architecture Day message, BIA President Kerry K. Dragon calls for a coordinated approach:
• Maintain existing homes through professional assessment, planned repairs and clear responsibilities, including shared areas as residents become homeowners.• Assess derelict buildings and vacant lots for appropriate reuse, with architects involved early alongside other specialists.• Plan new housing together with drainage, utilities, transport and public spaces, with residents involved while meaningful decisions remain open.

Climate resilience should be supported by clear design requirements, competent construction and proper supervision. Regional resources such as CDEMA’s Safer Building Programme can support this work within their defined scope.

The BIA supports investment in housing and encourages early professional involvement to help turn these initiatives into homes and neighbourhoods people can safely rely on and afford to maintain.

Which housing issues would you like to see receive greater attention?

Over the past decade, her professional portfolio has included work with both public and private sector teams, diversifying her experience and nurturing creative depth across a range of project typologies, including hospitality, commercial, high-end residential, and accessible housing.

Her academic work has also explored the relationship between architecture, community, collaboration, and identity. Her architectural thesis, “The Exchange Tower: Collaborative Spaces for Design Thinking Toward Community Change,” focused on the potential of collaborative design spaces, while her architectural dissertation explored marketing and brand identity.

Kerisha is a member of the Jamaican Institute of Architects Media and Events Committee and the Barbados Institute of Architects Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee.
