Equals is an organisation dedicated to working with and for the LGBTQI community. Providing, linking We were officially incorporated in 2013.

Equals is a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) that works with the LGBTQI community & key populations. Our main mandate is to work for and with persons within our key population groups to help them access quality services such as healthcare, social care, counseling, etc and to advocate for their needs in these systems. For Equals this is done by creating safe social spaces and programmes, helping persons access stigma and discrimination free services, working on policy with service providers, defending and advocating human rights issues of persons in these key populations. For a while Equals operated in the background, working with LGBTQI youth and providing a safe space for them to socialise under the support of the Caribbean HIV AIDS Alliance and the Barbados HIV AIDS Commission. Our Social Media Project is all about education and discussion on all issues relating to the LGBTQI community. We are hoping to be able to not only educate the community on issues that affect them, but also to educate those who may not be a part of the community with information on the community. The organisation is based in Barbados and we also have contacts in many departments (education, health, etc.) and if a community member requires assistance accessing a service (e.g. health care or legal) we will do our best to assist.

This Friday, October 2, we're turning The Safe Space into a full evening of creativity, connection, and fun, and we want you there for all of it.

6:00 PM to 8:00 PM: Art Hangout
Come through for a relaxed, guided art session. No experience needed, just show up as you are. Bring a friend, bring your energy, or just bring yourself and see where the paint takes you.

8:00 PM to 1:00 AM: Game Night Lime
Once the art wraps, we're keeping the good vibes going with board games, card games, video games, music, and good company. Food and drinks will be on sale, so come hungry and ready to play.

Whether you catch one event or stay for the whole night, this is exactly the kind of space we love building together, one where our community can gather, create, and just be. We'd love to see your face there.

Let's talk about PrEP. Dr. Sheena Weekes breaks down who PrEP is for.

The short answer is anyone who is sexually active and wants an added layer of protection against HIV.

More specifically PrEP may be for you if:
You have multiple partners
You have one partner and want extra peace of mind
You are non-monogamous
You have a partner who is HIV positive and want protection on top of U=U

Here at Equals it is an oral medication, and we generally recommend taking it daily.
One important thing to know: PrEP protects very effectively against HIV, but it does not protect against other STIs or pregnancy. It is one tool in your care, and it works best alongside regular screening.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community in Barbados still experience stigma and discrimination when expressing products and services, particularly non-binary and transgender individuals. 🌈

As such, Equals is seeking to create the Pink Directory, an amalgamated list of q***r and q***r friendly professions committed to safely providing products and services to the community.

Mark your calendars! Our AGM is happening on SATURDAY OCTOBER 17, 2026 from 10:00 AM.

Do you want to take a leadership role at Equals? This year, members will vote for the positions of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Secretary. In our hybrid session (online and in-person). We'll also be sharing updates on our projects, our website revamp and the work we've done this year.

A full report and our audited financial files will be sent to members by Saturday, October 3, 2026, so you can review everything ahead of time.

Meet Dr. Sheena Weekes, our general practitioner. Equals offers a space that is neutral, welcoming and built to make care accessible to anyone who walks through our doors.

Here is what you can access under one roof:
Full general practice care, including chronic illness management
A PrEP clinic
Gender affirming care clinics
Routine STI screening
Counselling and psychological services
Referrals to sensitised practitioners for anything we do not offer on site
Our base fee is $50 BBD, which covers your general practice visit, your PrEP visit and your STI screening.

Equals would like to hear from you what dance forms most interested you. 🌈 Dance is more than a pastime but can be a career, a form of healthcare and a sustainer of local culture.

Additionally, dance has always been an important form of expression for the community, and we continue to use as a tool of liberty and resistance. 🏳️‍🌈

This week Equals welcomed Mary from Pittsburgh University not only to Barbados, but to our safe space as she conducts her study on assisted fertilization and reproduction in Barbados.

During the conversation we discussed some of Equals’ work in sexual and reproductive health, dissecting some of the challenges persons in the LBTQ+ community may face.

Mary, and many other students, conduct critical research in Barbados and across the Caribbean, providing insights that assists in grant-funding, proposal writing and programming. As such, Equals is always willing to give our time to ensure the community has a voice. 🌈
